  • Ready to Eat

    6 november 2017, Frankrijk ⋅ ⛅ 50 °F

After sleeping for several hours, we woke up realizing that we were very hungry since we hadn't eaten hardly anything on the plane. We left our hotel and decided to take a walk around the neighborhood and find somewhere to eat. We ended up at Pizza Hut because it was something familiar to us. Being new here, and feeling so tired and hungry, Kathy didn't want to "have any surprises" eating at a place that we didn't know.Meer informatie

  • Pizza Hut

    6 november 2017, Frankrijk ⋅ ⛅ 50 °F

Our first meal in Paris is at Pizza Hut. It feels strange to be eating at an American place while in France but Kathy seems to be a bit suspicious of the food here. She was even suggesting that I should get bottled water rather then just regular water because maybe the water here isn't good for drinking. This is really surprising me. Does she think that France is a third world country? I remember having to boil the water in the Philippines so I could drink it but I'm sure that water in France is perfectly safe to drink. My glass of water was just brought to the table, so wish me luck!Meer informatie

  • Des Fesses de Jennifer Lopez

    6 november 2017, Frankrijk ⋅ ⛅ 50 °F

We passed this strange little place on our way back to the hotel after eating lunch. This sign, outside of Bagelstein, translates to the official partner of Jennifer Lopez's buttocks. Does this mean if you eat their bagels you'll get a big butt like Jennifer Lopez? I guess somebody didn't like the idea because they wrote "sexiste" underneath it. I just found it odd. We didn't go to this shop though. I wouldn't eat bagels in France, I'm here for the croissants!Meer informatie

  • Streetside Dining

    6 november 2017, Frankrijk ⋅ ⛅ 50 °F

These open air dining areas are all over the streets of Paris. We have some of these in New York City but nowhere near as much as they have here. I've never eaten out on the streets like this before but I've always been curious about it. I'm hoping that I get to try it on this trip. It looks like it would be fun!Meer informatie

  • Parking the Bikes

    6 november 2017, Frankrijk ⋅ ⛅ 50 °F

Motorcycles seem to be the most popular form of transportation in Paris. We're seeing them all over the city! I guess it makes sense for the people here, since parking spots seem very few and far between. Several motorcycles can fit in the space that one car would take up and yet we're still seeing them come right up on the sidewalk to park because the streets are all filled up.Meer informatie

  • Open Air Dining

    6 november 2017, Frankrijk ⋅ ⛅ 50 °F

More tables and chairs outside! It's as if every restaurant and cafe features outdoor dining. It's a good thing that the sidewalks are wider here than they are back home so they can accommodate this. I wonder if the restaurants have to pay extra money to the city for using the sidewalks as part of their restaurants? I really like the idea of eating this way. I want us to do it!Meer informatie

  • Croissants!

    6 november 2017, Frankrijk ⋅ ⛅ 50 °F

We finally found real French croissants! These were in the window of Le Croissant, a small pastry shop that looks kind of like the French version of Dunkin Donuts. It's too bad that we filled up on pizza at Pizza Hut because I would have been happy to have these for dinner! We decided to come back another time to enjoy these, hopefully earlier in the day when the croissants are nice and fresh!Meer informatie

  • One of Many

    6 november 2017, Frankrijk ⋅ ⛅ 50 °F

These newsstands are on nearly every corner, at least in the very small part of Paris that we've seen so far. These stands seem very well stocked, selling much more than just newspapers and magazines. They also sell candy, drinks, and a big selection of French souvenirs. It's one-stop shopping at it's finest!Meer informatie

  • Suzette Creperie

    6 november 2017, Frankrijk ⋅ ⛅ 50 °F

Take away crepes? This is definitely something for us! I'm glad that this place is right across the street from our hotel because I think we'll be stopping by here very often. Since they do take away orders, we can take them back to the hotel with us. What a great snack idea to enjoy crepes before going to bed!Meer informatie

  • Details

    6 november 2017, Frankrijk ⋅ ⛅ 50 °F

Architectural details like this are all over Paris. I'm loving the older details, like this, mixed in with the modern city of Paris. This is a look at a door on the streets of Paris. Most of them are not this elaborate but nearly every door here has a round knob, or handle, in the exact center of the door. I thought that this was kind of strange. If the knob is in the center of the door, you need to put forth a lot more energy to open it. I think, with the door knob on the side, you are able to have much more leverage. I guess the centered knobs work for them but it's a bit off to me. It reminds me of the Hobbit doors in Lord of the Rings. Their door knobs are centered also.Meer informatie

  • At the Hotel

    6 november 2017, Frankrijk ⋅ ⛅ 48 °F

After wandering around the neighborhood for a bit, we returned to our hotel to regroup and relax for a bit. The time difference was really taking it's toll on us!
Our hotel room is kind of small by American standards but, from what we understand, the hotel rooms in Europe, and France in particular, are notoriously small. It's okay though. All we really use the room for is sleeping and showers.Meer informatie

  • A Room With a View

    6 november 2017, Frankrijk ⋅ ⛅ 48 °F

Here's the view from the window of our hotel room. I was hoping for something a bit more inspiring, like possibly the Eiffel Tower but no such luck. It could be worse, I suppose. We could just be looking out at a brick wall. This view is very similar to the one we had last year at our hotel room in London. I'm guessing that this is a typical view for Europe.Meer informatie

  • The Long Walk

    6 november 2017, Frankrijk ⋅ ⛅ 48 °F

Our room was the last one in the hall on the second floor, room 227. Being the last room, it was nice and quiet but it was a long walk to the elevator each time we wanted to go out. While the peace and quiet is nice I would have like liked to be a bit closer to the elevator. Maybe something around the middle of the hall would be a happy medium.Meer informatie

  • The Baker

    6 november 2017, Frankrijk ⋅ ⛅ 48 °F

We went out again, this time in search of a SIM card to make our phones work in France. On the way, we passed a lot of interesting sites, like this bakery sign made up of tiles outside of the door of the shop.
The first shop that we went to didn't have a SIM card from the company that Kathy wanted but he offered to sell us a chip from another company that's "just as good".

  • Masks

    6 november 2017, Frankrijk ⋅ ⛅ 48 °F

These animal masks look very European to me but there is also something very disturbing about them. I'm not sure why, but all of them, even the Spider-Man and Star Wars masks have a very sinister and unsettling look about them. Kathy didn't see them that way at all, so I guess it's just me.
We didn't want to get the SIM card from another company that we never heard of but it was starting to look like we had no choice until a guy in the shop told up where to go to get the chip, and he would take us there, in fact. Kathy thought it was a great idea but my guard immediately went up. I didn't like this plan and was afraid that he would lead us off to some back alley and rob us.

  • Vending Machines

    6 november 2017, Frankrijk ⋅ ⛅ 46 °F

We were very surprised to see a vending machine like this right out in the middle of the street. I guess that Paris is much more liberal and open than New York is. Most people in America think that we're very open minded but, compared to much of the world, we're actually very old fashioned and prudish.
As it turned out, that guy actually did bring us to a shop that had the SIM card that we wanted and it was a cheaper price too. I was suspicious over nothing but it's always better to be safe than sorry. Kathy is more trusting of people than I am but she doesn't trust things. For me, I don't trust anyone but I will, generally, rely on things. So, together, she and I make a very good team.
We decided to just get one SIM card, to save money, and to put it in Kathy's phone. If I needed to use the internet, I could just piggyback on her account since our phones can be linked together like that. Now we have phone and internet capabilities in Paris. Mission accomplished!

  • Darkness Falls

    6 november 2017, Frankrijk ⋅ ⛅ 46 °F

By the time we came out of the shop where we got the SIM card it had become so dark. It took a while because we had to get the card activated and the guy working there had to keep on taking care of other customers too. I was very surprised by how busy this store was. We saw a constant stream of customers coming in and out.
I was surprised that it became dark so quickly. It didn't seem to be a gradual change like we have here. It was as if a a switch was turned off and it was suddenly dark. Strange..

  • Passage Jouffroy

    6 november 2017, Frankrijk ⋅ 🌙 45 °F

Since it was built in 1836, Passage Jouffroy has been one of the most visited covered arcades in the capital. Situated on the Grands Boulevards and in the continuation of Passage des Panoramas, it owes its charm to its beautiful iron and glass architecture (the ogive glass roof immediately catches the eye) and its marble paving, renovated in 1987.Meer informatie

  • Holiday Shopping

    6 november 2017, Frankrijk ⋅ 🌙 45 °F

This is our first time to see some Christmas decorations up. Apparently, since they don't have Thanksgiving here, the Christmas decorations are put up a bit sooner than we normally do it in the States. I'm hoping, as the days go by, that we see more and more of the holiday festivities here. We saw a bit of it in London, right before we left, but it looks like they start decorating a bit earlier here.Meer informatie

  • Hôtel Chopin Grands-Boulevards Paris

    6 november 2017, Frankrijk ⋅ 🌙 45 °F

The Hotel Chopin is situated inside the Passage du Jouffroy, a 19th-century arcade located along the Boulevard Montmartre near the Opera shopping district. It’s quite the center of temptations—lined with picture-perfect stores selling toys, jewelry and sweets. And then halfway down, you stumble upon the Hotel Chopin...
This is a great looking hotel. I might like to stay here the next time we visit Paris.
