• Alpengeist

German villagers have long told stories about a legendary snow beast they call Alpengeist, the Ghost of the Alps. Like any good ghost story, it's what you don't see coming that scares you the most. Meet Alpengeist. One of the tallest, fastest, most insane roller coasters in the world. Before you can say "boo," the floor drops beneath your feet.
    The surprises have begun.
What comes next is what many coaster enthusiasts still call the ride of a lifetime. After climbing to an Alpine high of 195 feet, riders are hurtled through six staggering inversions at speeds up to 67 miles per hour.
It's the spirit of the Alpengeist that will haunt you long after you are finally released from its power.

  • Saint Nicholas

Next to the candy store was a shop that sold all sorts of traditional German goods. There was a lot of Christmas decorations and even these big hand carved wooden figures depicting how Santa Claus looks throughout Europe, particularly in Germany. This is Saint Nicholas, a real life saint who was, supposedly the basis of the Santa Claus legend. He looks very religious, more like a bishop from the church rather than the Santa Claus of today that we all know and love.

  • Belsnickel

Belsnickel is a legendary figure who accompanies Santa Claus in certain regions of Europe, as well in some small Dutch communities in Pennsylvania. The role of the Belsnickel is to be the main disciplinarian of Santa’s entourage. Unlike Santa, who was designed to be beloved by children, Belsnickel is generally a character to be feared, and in most regions he is employed as a sort of warning to coerce kids into being good.
Although Belsnickel generally comes off as a negative figure, in some regions he is also known to give gifts. In Germany, for example, well-behaved kids are given candy and small gifts on Dec. 6, the feast day of St. Nicholas. Naughty children, on the other hand, are given coal or switches, and in some places they may even receive a visit from the Belsnickel himself, who will warn them that they should be on their best behavior.
This figure looks very stern and mean. I see that he has his switches all ready to give out too!

  • The Sweet Shop

I was feeling in the mood for a snack so I went back into the sweet shop. The chocolates looked very tempting but, since it was a warm day, I went with the jelly fruit slices. I didn't want melted chocolate all over me so the fruit slices just seemed safer. I love the fruit slices anyway so I didn't feel bad that I was missing the chocolate. I got a mix of orange, raspberry and grape. I've never seen grape available before so I had to try it! All of them tasted great! Such high quality candy! If we have time, I'd like to stop by later and get some more.

  • Here There Be Dragons

The Land of Dragons was the children's area of Busch Gardens. We passed through it but didn't stay here for any length of time. I liked how colorful everything here is. I remember Veronica and Bryan playing here years ago. Now, I'm sure neither of them would want to be here at all. I'm glad, with so much of Busch Gardens devoted to wild rollercoasters, that they've set aside an area for smaller children to play and have fun.

  • The Carousel

The carousel in Busch Gardens was so disappointing! It was very dark and gloomy, with no lighting, and the horses looked very strange, as if they were deformed or something. I love to photograph carousels but not this one. Most carousels are very beautiful works of art but this one really missed that mark. I wish they had put more love and care into creating this.

  • A Noble Steed

Looking closer at the carousel horses, I can see why they all look a bit off. There seems to be too much flesh built up on their forehead, between their eyes and their noses. That makes them look like some sort of alien species of an animal like a horse but not quite. Maybe these beasts could be the equivalent of a horse on some other world. I'm surprised that the person who carved these horses didn't notice something that looks so obvious to me.

  • Back to Britain

By now, it was time for us to get back to England to see the show London Rocks. We knew it was a music show but, other than that, we had no idea what we could expect. At the very least, it would be good to sit down in an air conditioned theater for a little while. We'd been walking around in the hot sun all day!

  • The Finale

We had a great time at this show. The songs were all very good and were performed quite well. We both really enjoyed London Rocks. I haven't had much experience with concert photography so I'm surprised that what I was able to come away with. It's definitely something I'd like to get more practice with.

  • Diaster Strikes!

It was after we came out of the London Rocks show that diaster struck! Kathy had a bottle of water in her purse and, somehow, the cap came off, filling her purse with water! It was a nearly full bottle and everything in her bag was drenched. We sat on a bench in the shade right outside the London Rocks Theater while she emptied all the water out of her bag, took everything out of it, and tried to dry everything off. Fortunately, her phone was in her pocket so it didn't get wet but two batteries for the phone were at the bottom of her purse sitting in a puddle of water. There was no saving them. I dried them off but Kathy was afraid water may have seeped into the battery and could destroy the phone if they were used. Better, and safer, to just throw them away. Phone batteries are cheap enough these days. She'd have to use her phone sparingly now because her backup batteries are both gone. At least she can charge up her phone tonight at the hotel.

  • So Call Me Maybe

It took Kathy a while to get her purse, and everything in it, dried up. I helped her wherever I could and wandered around the England area while she was busy cleaning her bag. This iconic red phone booth looks just like the real thing that they have in London. I wonder if it actually is the real thing, brought over here from England.

  • Back to Ireland

Once we finished in England, it was time to quickly head back over to Ireland to see the Irish Dancing show. We made it here just in time and almost didn't make it into the show because it was so full. Fortunately, one of the people working there found us seats so we were able to get in .

  • Let's Dance!

The seats that worker found for us weren't the greatest but at least we were inside and seeing the show. I was seated behind a tall person with a hat who was blocking a good portion of the stage from my view. He kept moving his head around so that I had to also keep moving to try and see around. He was so annoying!

  • Ligeann Damhsa! (Let's Dance!)

The Irish Dancing show was very good, at first, but it quickly became the same sort of thing over and over and, after a while, I started getting bored with it. That guy blocking my view didn't help matters, either. We saw just about every show that Busch Gardens had and I'd say that this one was my least favorite. Lot's of people seemed to love it though. There was so much clapping and cheering and this was the most crowded show we saw today. So, although I wasn't thrilled with the show, it's apparently very popular.

  • Time for Lunch

After the Irish Dancing show, we decided to take a quick break for lunch. We shared one of those giant turkey legs and, when we sat down, we had the entire dining area to ourselves. Being able to enjoy a quiet and intimate lunch for just the two of us was a very nice, and welcome, surprise.
We always enjoy these big turkey legs but I don't know why they are so hard to find outside of theme parks and the Renaissance Fair. It would be nice to be able to get one of these at the food court in the mall or maybe at at a food cart in the city, sort of the same way hot dogs are sold. The way it is now, since we can't get a turkey leg very often, it's a rare treat. Maybe it's better that way though. We appreciate, and enjoy, it more because it's not something we can have very often.

  • The Escapee

On the way to our next show, Predators, we saw this hawk outside the show area. He had escaped from the show and they just caught him. That used a small leather ball with feathers tied to it to catch him. The leather ball is on the end of a rope and they swing it around in a circle. The hawk sees the feathery ball and grabs it, thinking it's another animal that it can eat. Once the hawk grabs the ball, he hangs on and won't let go, letting the trainer easily reel the escaped hawk in.

  • Shedding

It was a hot and humid day today and I was really feeling the heat. I can only imagine how hot the wolves were with all that heavy fur. You can even see how much he's shedding as the trainer rubs him. The hair is flying right off him! It must feel so amazing being so close to a wolf and even getting to touch them.
