    Inauspicious start

    October 21, 2023 in England ⋅ 🌧 15 °C

Found out late last night that the main flight leg, Fankfurt to Sao Paolo, is delayed by almost 12 hours! 😱 That means we miss our connection to Montevideo... over to you, Lufthansa!🤷‍♀️

  • We're on our way

    October 22, 2023 in Germany ⋅ 🌙 12 °C

So our flight from London was delayed, obvs 🙄 but we have made it to Frankfurt, where we are staying overnight and off again to Sao Paolo in the early morning. Enjoying a late night snack....

  • Leg 1 - done

    October 22, 2023 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

So we're back at Frankfurt Airport after a short but pleasant night in a hotel in the equivalent of Reading! About 20 minutes by motorway away... More stressful conversations with LH service agents, but I think we have been booked on the Montevideo flight tomorrow morning...🤞All will be revealed in Sao Paolo. Watch this space...Read more

  • Bom Dia Sao Paolo!

    October 22, 2023 in Brazil ⋅ 🌙 20 °C

Day 2 on our ‘Race to the Bottom of the World.’ Arrived in Sao Paolo, Brazil to be ferried to another overnight stop in a nice hotel. We catch our last flight to Montevideo first thing tomorrow morning and, touch wood, no delays, we board the ship G Adventures in the afternoon. A stressful start but we’re getting there😳😀🍻Read more

  • Ship ahoy!

    October 23, 2023 in Uruguay ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

Finally, we reached the ship MS Expedition, which will be our home for the next 3 weeks! It used to be an old car ferry on the Dover to Calais and Folkestone to Boulogne routes, so may well have sailed on it before, albeit in calmer waters! The sail away was a little damp but exciting to be underway, and the view from our cabin window (not a porthole) is fabulous! South Atlantic, here we come!Read more

  • Life on the ocean wave

    October 30, 2023, South Atlantic Ocean ⋅ ☁️ 1 °C

So a typical day at sea involves lectures in the morning and afternoon, interspersed with spells on deck, looking for wildlife or icebergs. Routine revolves around mealtimes and a spot of entertainment in the evenings. On days prior to landings, there are biosecurity checks involving much thorough boot scrubbing!Read more

  • Stunning South Georgia.

October 31, 2023 in South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands ⋅ ☁️ 1 °C

The journey across to South Georgia was pretty smooth, dodging icebergs and the Shag Rocks and again we’ve been lucky to find some beautiful weather. Temps 2-8C and clear blue skies which are showing off this island’s spectacular scenery. Halloween celebrated with the Monkey Eating Eagles, the crew’s band.Read more

  • South Georgia wildlife

    November 2, 2023, South Atlantic Ocean ⋅ 🌬 3 °C

This island has a mind boggling range of bird life, penguins and seals in vast numbers. A few icebergs thrown in too. Gobsmacking!

  • Grytviken

    November 2, 2023, South Atlantic Ocean ⋅ 🌬 3 °C

The old whaling station at Grytviken is full of South Georgia's heritage. The museum was excellent and provided a window on life as a whaler. Our guide was a girl from the Shetlands whose grandfathers had been whalers on South Georgia. Most of the wooden buildings are long gone, but the machinery is rusting beautifully. The whole place has an eerie quality and has been largely taken over by the wildlife. The highlight was visiting Shackleton's grave in the small cemetery and paying our respects to The Boss.Read more

  • Iceberg Alley

    November 5, 2023, South Atlantic Ocean ⋅ 🌬 1 °C

Rolling through the Scotia Sea after spending 4 sensational days exploring South Georgia. Our last day there revealed Chinstrap and Gentoo penguins and even an elusive
Leopard Seal which came to check out the zodiacs patrolling the coast. Now heading for the Antarctic peninsula (Elephant Island) “dodging the white bits”, as the captain calls the array of spectacular icebergs that are regularly lining our route.Read more

  • The White Continent

    November 6, 2023 in Antarctica ⋅ 🌬 -1 °C

Finally, we sailed south of 60° into the Antarctic. Our first visit was to Elephant Island, where we viewed chinstrap penguins and the incredible forbidding scenery by zodiac. Finally, we landed at Neko Harbour on the Peninsula, where we arrived at the same time as the gentoo penguins! What an amazing morning that was! In a day of two halves, the afternoon took us to Cuverville Island in almost horizontal snow to view a huge number of new gentoo arrivals. We have also seen humpback whales who have come here to feed on krill. Antarctica certainly didn't disappoint!Read more

  • Deception to Ushuaia

    November 12, 2023 in Argentina ⋅ ☁️ 9 °C

Now ensconced in Ushuaia after a relatively smooth crossing of the infamous Drake’s Passage. Deception Island (an active volcano) was our last stop in Antarctica. Lots of fun in the Ship’s Polar Bear Bar and a Polar Plunge to end an incredible 21 days at sea exploring this mind boggling part of the globe.Read more
