  • Olive oil sippy cups and Croat dinner

    8 november 2023, Kroatien ⋅ 🌙 10 °C

We drank olive oil and had it drizzled over horsd'oeuvres and desserts! Then we did a night walk of a little town called Balle, where Casanova had a house according to a placque outside on the wall. We took some spooky night pictures and then split into 3 groups where we went to a modest old home and had a 100% homemade dinner with a lovely family in their kitchen, where the daughter came to make everything from scratch to compliment her papa's homemade schnapps. (That's moonshine for us Arkansawyers.). I had a polite taste and gave the rest to my seat mate who was glad to take it.Läs mer

  • Shroomin'

    9 november 2023, Kroatien ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

Farm visit today just made me appreciate how interesting and unique and awesome OUR farm is. That's what traveling is supposed to do! We could do this if I didn't have to clean first. Anyway we foraged for mushrooms that were everywhere. We got to see the farm's old stone corrals (you can see them on the map) for holding sheep (no sheep or goats or cattle or pigs... just an old swaybacked horse that everyone went gaga over. Ha.) The farmwife taught us how to make pasta, which we shaped over skewers. They had a field planted in lettice, which we picked. (These slickers stepped all over the plants.). The mushrooms were grilled over a kitchen fire. I mean an open fireplace in the kitchen. I want one. We ate the pasta we made. We also made cookies that were finished by dipping them in white wine and sugar. Actually delicious!Läs mer

  • Pula

    10 november 2023, Kroatien ⋅ 🌧 13 °C

Threatened rain all day but it never happened. Probably because we were prepared. I was excited to see the intact amphitheater and then learned it was reconstructed by a certain Itiallian dictator in WWII... no, I can't spell his name. It was cool anyway, and there we still some actual Roman masonry. Pretty much all the building materials were repurposed (stolen) for churches and such. The structure is denied by Unesco as a heritage site because it has lights for concerts installed.
I should mention dad has a bad cold as do some other of the passengers. He comes on the walks anyway. I bought him some medicinal honey at a farmers market but he won't try it. It tastes fantastic. I think it may be infused with elderberry. I got this particular one doing pantomime for a cold and this one was recommended. I will probably eat it all in the next few days. It is amazing.

  • Pula after dark

    10 november 2023, Kroatien ⋅ 🌧 13 °C

After an evening walk and the usual too much to eat, we had a hilariously dreadful/wonderful onboard concert tonight where two brothers played traditional Istrian instruments for us. To be sure the first ones sounded like kids screwing around on toy horns. Then the sheep-bladder came out...
Sweet guys tho. Got us all singing Take Me Home Country Roads.

  • Cres. Pronounced Strrress.

    11 november 2023, Kroatien ⋅ ⛅ 11 °C

This is an island. Oh look. More narrow streets. And a fairly strrrresssful bus ride to the Griffin Vulture Center with a terrific surprise. (See next footprint) The weather turned nice and I spent a beautiful afternoon relaxing on our veranda while dad prowls the city. All the electric bikes were spoken for and to be honest, I'm pampering a cold I caught from dad.Läs mer

  • Something completely different

    11 november 2023, Kroatien ⋅ ☀️ 12 °C

Griffon Vulture preserve, a Roman road/bridge and a town called Bele with under 55 inhabitants. (Free houses, I am told). You only need a big bus on a narrow road with steep drops to get here. All the stone crumbling buildings are farm buildings for the town but no animals anywhere. I did learn that the town we toured is empty because it is olive picking season. Every family has particular trees side by side and mixed together. They inherit them and some are hundreds of years old. There are almost NO farm animals anywhere. That's one of the reason the vultures are endangered because there are no carcasses to eat!Läs mer

  • Veterans night celebration

    11 november 2023, Kroatien ⋅ 🌙 12 °C

Dad and I danced, I'm absolutely certain he appreciates Diane even more now. Our waiters and cooks wore silly costumes as they served us and finished the evening playing music with the head chief playing a speaker box like a drum. It ended with a Balinease dishwasher dancing for us with a conga line around him. You had to be there.Läs mer

  • Nope

    12 november 2023, Kroatien ⋅ 🌧 12 °C

Stayed in the cabin all day with the sniffles, sneezes, and drips. Dad ventured out and said all I missed was a walk in a city on a dreary day. Our group attended a cooking class, that has something to do with shrimp. My biggest project was washing some rocks I found with the hopes that if they smell like bleach maybe customs wallet me keep them. The red one turned out to be just clay and started to disintegrate when I washed it so I tossed it overboard, which was enough excitement for one day.Läs mer

  • HUMming along

    13 november 2023, Kroatien ⋅ ☁️ 4 °C

I probably have the map wrong, but we were in beautiful countryside and visited magical villages and learned all about truffle dogs. Still, an alarming lack of farm animals, which has me puzzled. Hum is the castle in the clouds. The view was amazing. A kindergarten class played on the town square and the walk on the walls was awesome.Läs mer

  • I hate this place.

    14 november 2023, Kroatien ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

Who knew the Hotel California was in Karlovac? This is now a museum for the 1992 War between Croatia and Serbia. I read the inscription next to the tie-dye pants and had to go outside and walk around. Our Serbian born guide says this war is only half over. Everyone is waiting for the second movement. He escaped Sarajevo with his family when he was a boy. The descriptions of nationalism turning neighbors against one another sounds too possible at home.
Nikola Tesla was born near here. I wish we'd gone there instead.

  • Zagreb. Grafitti Capitol City

    15 november 2023, Kroatien ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

A city recovering from an earthquake in 2019. Food was meh. Feeling forlorn that trip is nearly done. Learned that it has the Best voted Christmas Market in Europe for 4 years running starting next week. Next. Week.

Surprisingly, it is safe to walk here at night. They are proud of their concrete block tenement sky-scrapers ringing the city. Apparently, they are well-built little self-contained villages within that rode out the earthquake just fine.

Mirza had an encounter in the hotel elevator with the top 3 European soccer players staying at the Hotel and he was totally star-struck and forgot to take pictures as he was trying to be cool about it: it was so cute!

  • The more interesting upper Zagreb

    15 november 2023, Kroatien ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

The world's shortest tram and the invention of the necktie. A miracle painting and a few dragons. And Nick gets a consolation plaque (less flashy than the necktie guy). There is also a Museum for Broken Relationships and lots of shops and market stalls. I could have shopped here. I did poke around a few of them looking for angels but there were none to be found. Maybe they should get more, considering earthquakes and all. Zagreb turned out all right.Läs mer

A few more pics of Zagreb. Then a farewell celebration and crazy good luck on the plane when we got the whole center row to ourselves. Dad and I had a cracker sword fight. We binge-watched movies: The Debators and The Passengers. I also rewatched Eat. Pray. Love. Just to see Rome again and recognized a couple of scene locations, one near our BnB. Don't like the movie much but it was a nice full-circle experience.Läs mer
