    It's happening

    October 23, 2023 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 19 °C

Even though my passport doesn't have my full middle name and even though we got lost in the airport...(three times) it looks like we are going to make it! Paul got us to the busstop and laughed at me for wanting to go so early but we have only an hour to spare. Dad is wandering around the airport. What, me worry?Read more

  • Munich! Did I spell that right?

    October 24, 2023 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

First glimpses of Germany through the clouds. I was dismayed I couldn't see stars all night, then it continued to be dark as we approached Germany and I told Dad I must have flipped my hours as it was still dark. He looked at me incredulously and showed me that my window was darkened. No shade, mind you but the glass darkens via a control. The Window seat was totally wasted on me. And the seats are like those on Frontier-- hard with the barest of cushions. A very uncomfortable trip but already mostly forgotten as I'm so excited to be here! Now we have to find our next flight to Rome that leaves in a couple hours. The airport food here is amazing, and I spotted my first German angel in a duty free shop selling purfume.perfume. Finally, when it comes to bathrooms, Germans have it covered. I stopped short of making a video of the cloth hand towels that mechanically unroll for you and the dissappear into the wall when you are done.Read more

  • Dinner in Rome

    October 24, 2023 in Italy ⋅ 🌙 19 °C

We were too late for our walking tour but sat next to a nice Italian young man who helped us with the menu and made sure Dad didn't get any pepper on his. His recommendations however were kinda met, but it was authentic pasta and we sat next to the street and had a nice chat with him. We managed to find our way back to the BnB and it is so awesome I'm going to make a video in the morning.Read more

  • Apartment tour

    October 25, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

Amazing views from our 4th floor apartment. Really nice if you don't count all our stuff strewn about. The espresso machine was a puzzle but I cracked it. Still screwing up my courage for the bidet.

  • Perfect day!

    October 25, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

Hard to know what to include because you can get all the pictures you want of these places. Hard to describe the difference of actually being there!

Lots of fun facts today: Arena is the Italian word for sand. It was built over a former lake. It was named for a colossal statue (colosi-eum) that was near it, and the statue was as tall as the Coliseum! No Christians were fed to the lions, only criminals. And I got a picture of the toilet trench, because.toilets.seem to be a focus of this tripRead more

  • Evening amble

    October 25, 2023 in Italy ⋅ 🌧 20 °C

No taxi to be had so we strolled around the neighborhood after going down 8 flights of marble stairs because the elevator stopped working. 9 flights if you count the ones in the foyers. But whose counting? Me, thats who. We saw a neat fountain just around the corner that was also next to the hidden entrance to a park we could see from our terrace, but couldnt figure out before now how to get to it., a.stature of a Saint being burned alive, and saw a group of people lined up at a doorway but no one was going in. I thought it might be an exclusive club but as we got closer we saw each person bending down with their camera. Zac has always recommended getting in line without knowing why, so we did. We had stumbled upon a famous keyhole called Porta of Malta.or something. Looking through it, it frames the Dome of St Peter down a lovely viney passway. I didn't take a picture because there are a million exact ones online, but I did photograph the crowd, and there was a man playing nice guitar music leaning on the building. Very pleasant by moonlight. Good thing we didn't get a cab. Dad was suddenly very tired so we went back to the room. Luckily the elevator was now working. Had a lovely dinner at Casa del Refrigerator. Luckily we had visited a market earlier.Read more

  • The not so pan-theon

    October 26, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

So, I was mostly looking forward to the Pantheon, the only perfectly preserved building from ancient Rome... built to honor all gods. Now it is the Jesus-athon, because like everything else around here it became the property of the catholic church. It did have a couple of nice angels for Megan.Read more

  • Rome, actually

    October 26, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

Random Rome pictures... amazing day. We ended up in our own neighborhood on a tour to discover we may have the best BnB in the entire city once we learned this history of our surroundings. Our hosts told us we were in the most exclusive neighborhood. I'll add info to each picture later. Right now, I'm just uploading and going to bed.Read more

  • Our neighborhood: the hangout of Remus

    Oct 26–29, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

Our neighborhood is the most posh since history began and is on the most defensible hill that the Romans fled to when the empire fell and their riches were sacked. Also it was where Romulus' brother Remus wanted to start Rome, not one hill over. ROMULUS LATER KILLED HIS BROTHER. these are the guys who were raised by a she wolf and founded Rome. she-wolf is a euphemism for a prostitute.
    Author.dana.reynolds@gmail.com I
Dad and I napped in the grass next to a temple to Hercules on the site of the original Livestock sale where Hercules was called upon the get sheep back from a thief who took them from the market and hid them in a cave. I could relate.

We saw a church made from the stolen columns of a temple... like most of them ... but this one had a magic orange tree you can see through a hole that is always in bloom while always having Oranges ready to harvest. The oldest orange tree in the world they say. And indeed it had fruit.

I got sad listening to a saiints tale about a son who returned home and died under his parents steps becuase he was too impoverished to return to them. Made me want to cry. They built a church for him that includes the actual steps.

We had dinner next to the circus maximus where they had chariot races 2500 years ago, so I told everyone about Chuck wagon races. It was pizza.

    Pizza in Rome, ya'all.

  • Somewhere speeding through the night

    October 27, 2023 in Vatican City ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

I'm not going to sugarcoat it. The Rome train station was a nightmare. We also got on the wrong subway to the Vatican, which was a nice day once we arrived even though the actual dome of St. Peters was closed! We did visit the museums including the Sistine Chapel where pictures weren't allowed so you'll just have to visit it yourself. Sorry Megan, no angels for you!Read more

  • Tombs of Mike, Dan and Leo

    October 28, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

The premier attractions of this church Santa Maria Novella are the tombs of Michelangelo, Dante and Galileo. This in itself is exciting, but the tombs weren't that hot. The one for Michelangelo was done by such lesser artists he must be rolling in there. Megan would have done better if he didn't mind angels in trench coats.Read more

  • Random angels

    October 28, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

Random angels at Santa Maria Novella where I wanted to see the Giotto frescoes, but they also were closed for restoration! But this church is nevertheless the birthplace of the Renaissance because he first began introducing 3D space and natural people into art. I bootlegged a tour by an art professor and walked a while with his students while dad napped in a pew. Finding angels is our Where's Waldo, or like Megan said, just do it like Pokémon Go!Read more

  • OMG David

    October 29, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

We walked the Ufizzi gallery and I snapped every angel I could slow down for. We sall all the things. It was lovely. It was fun. Then. THEN... after lunch we went to the Academia and saw David, and for the first time in my life, I was stripped to my core by a work of art. I was totally enthralled. I'll post a few obligatory pictures but it is pointless. Even if there weren't already billions of pictures of it everywhere, none of them... not one do it justice. Fun fact: I learned it was originally intended to go on one of the roof pedestals of the church in the square right in front of us. I'm so glad it was too heavy! It now lives in an art school. A school. Of art. I wonder if it is too late to complete my Masters of Fine Art?Read more
