  • I found Summertime in Frankfurt!

    June 23, 2022 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ 11 °C

Singapore Air gave me a horrible seat that could only be in upright position for the 7 and half hour flight, but after 3 hours in transit I boarded a more comfortable Lufthansa flight and managed to snatch a few hours sleep.
Frankfurt at 7am was alive with world travellers and a beautiful 27 degrees. I've read that a snatch of sunlight (Vitamin D) decreases the Jetlag effect. So I got into it!
I love that one of the world's busiest airports is surrounded by a lovely green belt of forest.
A fast train reaching top speed today of 263 kms per hour through rich farming land with cosy little villages dotted through it. Settled into my hotel and took a walk through the amazing Plant and Flower Garden to have a 5pm drink with my 12 other District 23 women on the 26th floor of the Radisson Blu. One beer there and one back at my hotel set me right for a return to normality sleep!

  • Morning and doors in Hamburg

    June 24, 2022 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

I woke early, but then so does the sun! Three views from my hotel windows because I am on the corner 7 floors up.
Just across the road is the amazing Planten an Blomen gardens, so beautiful that I will do a separate footprint. I took 80 photos! I walk through the garden every day to get to the Convention Centre.
I also took a long city walking tour provided by a local Zonta member, and attended by 2 ladies from Belgium, 1 from Austria, 1 from Ghana and 2 from the US. The Belgians and I treated our guide to lunch by one of the many canals in beautiful Hamburg.

  • The Rathaus

    June 24, 2022 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

The council or Senate meeting rooms are the grandest I have ever seen. But Hamburg still has a different status as a city because of its past history of trade through the Hanseatic League. It enjoys the status of being a State as well as a city. It is green and clean because there is no industrial damage. It relies on trade as its major income source.
The pic of fine woodcarving was the work of orphaned children.

  • Zonta Convention Day 2

    June 24, 2022 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

I love starting my day with these creamy tasty croissant type breads called Laugenstange. Meaning lye or Soda bread. Then a day of Workshops and our first taste of the amazing, new, tech savvy Hamburg Convention Centre. Supported our own Zonta Futurist, Carole Theobold in her workshop, attended an interesting workshop on mentoring refugee women from Afghanistan, met interesting women of the world, (from Côte d'Azure and Mongolia) presented my own Workshop and watched the arrival of some long distance cyclists riding for Zonta says No to Violence against Women, drifted back to my motel through Planten in Blomen alive with families, lovers, old folks and contemplaters to relax with a local beer. I love its tagline...'Hops, malt and Hamburg'Read more

  • Convention Day 3

    June 26, 2022 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

The official opening: twin brothers provided an ambient setting before the impressive flag ceremony. Every Zonta country was represented according to the year that they were inaugurated. The Ukraine presentation was the most moving. Everyone stood up and clapped when no flag was to recieve more value than any other.
Coffee cup with lucky ladybirds and a huge local pretzel bread for morning tea, then a meeting of interesting and amazing women from Bulgaria, Côte d'Ivoire and Bangladesh and Finland.
Then I ended up spending an interesting evening with Laura from St Louis, US. A delicious Bhudda Bowl and a surprise concert in the gardens at 10 pm on my way 'home'.

  • Convention Day 4

    June 27, 2022 in Germany ⋅ 🌧 18 °C

I am the Delegate representing my Club, Wangaratta and Mitchell, so I must manage these 3 Voting machines for most of the day as we wade through a review of about 27 By-laws. And the election of a new International Board for the next 2 years. I really enjoyed lunch with fellow UN Chairs from Canada, Germany and Austria.
A grey day, so the gardens had a different mood on my way back to my motel. Twenty more photos!

  • End of Convention

    June 28, 2022 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

I am leaving early, although only missed the last hour of presentations. I did like the powerful message in this banner and met up with Lydia Chaillou from France. Figures of those participating and a video speech from life member, The Grand Duchess of Luxembourg Fitting that the last tribute was one of pledged support to our 3 Sister clubs in Ukraine an the announcement that over 300,000 € has been donated by clubs around the world, but the 11 strong women here still needing to be even stronger...
Artistic clouds and a typical Hamburg building flit by from my train. Four hours and I will be in Cologne.
