    Hakuna Cavtat-a

    4. Mai in Kroatien ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

Today was mostly a travel day, but everything went smoothly and we arrived at our hotel around 5.30. We are staying a few miles along the coast from Dubrovnik in a town called Cavtat. We made good use of a couple of hours of sunlight to have a wander around the town and were treated with a glorious sunset.
We noticed a cool looking building on a hill so we walked up lots of steps to get to a cemetery with an octagonal chapel. Turns out this is a famous monument we've ticked off already (Racic Mausoleum) and the amazing views at the top made the climb worth it.
Spotted lots of cats on the walk as well which was fun.
After some food and drinks on the terrace we are resting up to explore Dubrovnik tomorrow. Hoping the weather isn't as bad as the forecast says!

  • Old Town Road

    5. Mai in Kroatien ⋅ ☁ 19 °C

    Very busy day today!
We had hoped to get a water taxi over to Dubrovnik today. However, due to the weather (which we would consider a gentle breeze), there were no boats running. We then had to figure out how to get the bus. We did find it and enjoyed the journey, however literally everyone got off at the wrong stop as no one knew what they were doing. So we had to walk 45 minutes into the old town before we'd even got started sightseeing.
Once we finally arrived in the Old Town we spent the day exploring and getting lost in the labyrinth of side streets and steps.
Today consisted of lots of coffee stops, gelato and a very tasty lunch. I very much enjoyed my pistacio, white chocolate and raspberry flavour 🍹.
We enjoyed finding the Dubrovnik cat shop where all the proceeds go to helping cats and we found a miniature souvenir to go in our display at home 🐈‍âŹ›ïž
We have also found all the locations that we are going to go to during the next few days with our Dubrovnik pass ticket. We are just really hoping the wind dies down so we can do the boat trips and cable car that weren't running today 🙏

  • Wonder Walls of Dubrovnik

    6. Mai in Kroatien ⋅ đŸŒ©ïž 18 °C

Due to that pesky gentle breeze again, the water taxis weren't running, so bus again. Unfortunately on this one we were squished like sardines, but can't complain about the incredibly scenic route along the coast to Dubrovnik.

We chose to use our Dubrovnik Pass today, which is a discount ticket for lots of historical landmarks. We started the day by doing the City Walls walk all along the perimeter of the walled city. We took millions of photos as the views were amazing, and made the most of the sunshine as it was forecast rain today (well all week!)

We then walked to the Lovrjenac Fortress which yet again had many lovely views of the old town.

After millions of steps we stopped for lunch and Tom tried black Risotto which turned his teeth black đŸ€Ł

We had a leisurely Potter around some of the museums on our ticket including Rector's palace, archaeology museum and a monastery.

Also coffee and Gelato stops again of course!

I'd spotted another part of the wall we hadn't walked on, so asked in the tourist information and there was a whole other part of the old walls included in our ticket, so we did lots more walking up steps and into turrets/lookout points. The best part is that we were the only people walking this part of the wall, a member of staff told us this area had only recently opened to the public so we were one of the first people to visit!

From one of the towers we spotted a basketball court down below. We found it funny that a rectangular court wouldn't fit due to the shape of the walls, but they built it anyway with the shape following the walls, cutting a corner off!

Safe to say we are exhausted now!

  • Let's get ready to Lokrum-ble

    7. Mai in Kroatien ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

Today the weather was finally good enough to get the water taxi across to Dubrovnik which was very exciting. It was really great to see the coastline from a different perspective than the bus. On the way we saw a few abandoned and derelict hotels which looked a bit eerie. The one here I looked up afterwards and it was heavily bombed during the war in 1991 and never been renovated. Apparently now it is just inhabited by cats!

When we arrived in Dubrovnik we jumped at the opportunity to go to Lokrum Island which we have wanted to do all week. We had a short boat trip over to the island which only took 10 minutes.

This island is so beautiful. There was so much to explore. There are wild peacocks roaming around everywhere! They are pretty noisy so you could hear them screeching a lot of the time. We spent the morning wandering around the gardens, monastery and rugged coastline, spending time climbing on the rocks which was really fun. After a quick lunch we did the 'big walk' which Tom wanted to do, which was around 2 miles around the Island , up to a hill fort on the top of a massive hill. It was a killer walking that hill in the blazing sun! But we were rewarded with the amazing views of Dubrovnik. And I had ice cream after the long walk 😀

After the long walk we were very hot, so headed to the Dead Sea for a dip. This is a small lagoon of salt water on the island with beautiful emerald green waters. Tom was braver than me and swam around, I just had a little dip in the shallows. A peacock also casually was wandering around right by where we were sitting! 🩚

We then had a bit of a sunbathe on the rocks before getting the boat back to Dubrovnik, then catching the water taxi back to our hotel.

So grateful for today as it was forecast rain today. The thunder and lightning storms have all been at night, so we've been very lucky!

  • 101 dalmatian's coast

    8. Mai in Kroatien ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

We haven't really been able to plan our days in advance due to the uncertainty of the weather, however, woke up to another sunny day today! We decided to do the Dubrovnik cable car, as it was running for the first time this week. It's a short ride up the Srd Hill, where there are panoramic views of the city and the beautiful Dalmatia coastline. We spent some time enjoying the views and had a coffee in the open-air restaurant. They gave us blankets, which was helpful as it was super windy up there!

Tom was really keen to walk up there, but I absolutely did not want to do that, so we compromised with getting the cable car up and walking back down, hearing promises of 'it can't be that far'. I did not really enjoy the physical walking, as I kept slipping on the rocks, but did enjoy the views and was so grateful we hadn't walked up. We certainly deserved our lunch after it took over an hour to get down the hill.

After lunch, we ventured over to a different part of the coast called Lapad. We were a bit underwhelmed by 'sunset beach' as there were a lot of closed down hotels and restaurants, and nowhere to get gelato in sight!

We did enjoy going to a bar in a cave for a drink and a cool down before getting the bus back to the hotel to catch some early evening rays and dinner.

  • Happiness comes in Waves

    9. Mai in Kroatien ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Quieter day today with a lot less steps than other days. As our flight is this evening we checked out and had a walk along the coast and a coffee in the harbour. The afternoon was then spent sunbathing on the terrace, getting in a few last minute rays before returning home.Weiterlesen
