  • Cooking class

    December 20, 2021 in Thailand ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

Went to a cooking class recommended by the hotel - pretty fab! They took us to a local market to buy some ingredients, then out to a farm in the countryside where they've got a huge bamboo barn. During covid they turned it into more of a restaurant for locals, but now back to cooking classes as well. Made and ate spring rolls, tom yum soup, pad Thai, Khao soi and mango sticky rice. All super tasty and couldn't finish them all!Read more

Hired a longtail boat from Captain E on the beach and went for a tour of Khai islands, three small islands not too far from ours. Beaut and deserted (until one big boat tour at the first). Checked out and went for lunch at the same place as yesterday. Then got the Santhiya transfer boat to Phuket, taxi to the airport and waited in the airport for a while before our flight. Landed in Bangkok at 11 fairly tired! Had a mildly exciting effort to find a Grab from the airport as low on cash, but made it to the hotel speedily once we did.Read more

  • Ayutthaya tour

    December 27, 2021 in Thailand ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Up at 6 for a tour of Ayutthaya, which is the old capital (around 500ish years ago) before it was invaded by the Burmese. Very hot (33) so good that we started early and had an air-conditioned tour bus. Saw four different temple complexes, which are mostly reconstructed. There are hundreds of temple ruins there, but they are the only part of the city left, as the other buildings were made of teak. Got Pad Thai for lunch at a roadside place with the tour group, and a couple of bits of street food. Nice to have a guide tell us a bit about the history of Ayutthaya and Bangkok.Read more

  • Swim and exploring Bangkok at night

    December 27, 2021 in Thailand ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

Much needed swim to cool off after the tour and doing all the flight admin and testing. Hotel pool had a great view of some of the skyscrapers. Then went exploring Bangkok to get some food. First got a Grab to Khao San road, which is an old backpacker hub and party street, but it was pretty dead. A few empty bars with very loud music and not much else! Then got another Grab to Asiatique, which is a riverfront mall/ restaurant area for some dinner (spring rolls, pizza and Thai pork chop and black sticky rice). Then back home! Bangkok taxis are v cheap (£3/4 for a 30 min journey) and quite a nice way to see a bit of the city.Read more
