  • Khao Soi lunch, silver temple and swim

    20 décembre 2021, Thaïlande ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

Got Khao Soi for lunch - classic Chiang Mai dish, spicy noodle soup with crunchy noodles on top. This was a v busy place popular with the locals, they'd run out of chicken by the time we arrived so got the pork version. Spicy! 🔥 Popped to a silver temple on the way back, via tuktuk, then back to hotel and quick swim to cool downEn savoir plus

  • Cooking class

    20 décembre 2021, Thaïlande ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

Went to a cooking class recommended by the hotel - pretty fab! They took us to a local market to buy some ingredients, then out to a farm in the countryside where they've got a huge bamboo barn. During covid they turned it into more of a restaurant for locals, but now back to cooking classes as well. Made and ate spring rolls, tom yum soup, pad Thai, Khao soi and mango sticky rice. All super tasty and couldn't finish them all!En savoir plus

  • Dinner at Dash

    21 décembre 2021, Thaïlande ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

Last night in Chiang Mai, went for dinner at a place called Dash, in a teak house. The guy in charge lived in West Hampstead for a bit! He grew up in Chiang Mai and the house is rebuilt from his grandma's teak house in the same place. First cocktail and had some Thai sausage, larb, noodles and braised porkEn savoir plus

  • Boat trip to Khai islands

    24 décembre 2021, Thaïlande ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

Hired a longtail boat from Captain E on the beach and went for a tour of Khai islands, three small islands not too far from ours. Beaut and deserted (until one big boat tour at the first). Chilled on sunloungers, wandered around and swam at the first, then a couple of snorkelling sessions around the second island (coral v bleached but lots of cool fish), then a final island and lunch and fresh pineapple 🍍 to finish it off.En savoir plus

  • Day 3 in Santhiya

    25 décembre 2021, Thaïlande ⋅ 🌙 28 °C

Alternative Christmas! Bit burnt still, but did a fair amount of swimming and chilling. Went to a new slightly inland restaurant (Isaan Fine) which was bril. Had crispy chicken skin salad, red curry and satay chicken skewers, mango smoothies and mango sticky rice for dessert. Swam in the infinity pool watching sunset, then dinner on the beach again. Missed turkey at home though! 🎄En savoir plus

  • Final morning at Santhiya

    26 décembre 2021, Thaïlande ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

Final morning at Santhiya was pretty active - went paddle boarding first thing in the morning, then breakfast and a final swim in the infinity pool. Checked out and went for lunch at the same place as yesterday. Then got the Santhiya transfer boat to Phuket, taxi to the airport and waited in the airport for a while before our flight. Landed in Bangkok at 11 fairly tired! Had a mildly exciting effort to find a Grab from the airport as low on cash, but made it to the hotel speedily once we did.En savoir plus

  • Ayutthaya tour

    27 décembre 2021, Thaïlande ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Up at 6 for a tour of Ayutthaya, which is the old capital (around 500ish years ago) before it was invaded by the Burmese. Very hot (33) so good that we started early and had an air-conditioned tour bus. Saw four different temple complexes, which are mostly reconstructed. There are hundreds of temple ruins there, but they are the only part of the city left, as the other buildings were made of teak. Got Pad Thai for lunch at a roadside place with the tour group, and a couple of bits of street food. Nice to have a guide tell us a bit about the history of Ayutthaya and Bangkok.En savoir plus

  • Swim and exploring Bangkok at night

    27 décembre 2021, Thaïlande ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

Much needed swim to cool off after the tour and doing all the flight admin and testing. Hotel pool had a great view of some of the skyscrapers. Then went exploring Bangkok to get some food. First got a Grab to Khao San road, which is an old backpacker hub and party street, but it was pretty dead. A few empty bars with very loud music and not much else! Then got another Grab to Asiatique, which is a riverfront mall/ restaurant area for some dinner (spring rolls, pizza and Thai pork chop and black sticky rice). Then back home! Bangkok taxis are v cheap (£3/4 for a 30 min journey) and quite a nice way to see a bit of the city.En savoir plus
