    Line up for check in, customs, boarding and everything in between. 😵‍💫
    Thanks to this crew joining me for my belated 60th Birthday Celebrations🎉
    Riley, Georgie, Luke, Declan, Jess, Jacko, Matilda & Craig. Next stop Dubai✈️( 13 hrs)

    Arrived in Athen

    Arrived in Athens after another 5 hours on the plane, another meal and 2 more movies. Picked up from airport by pre arranged bus to Athens Centre Square Hotel, central Athens. From the Airport to the Hotel-so much graffiti and Ramshackled buildings. Educated by our driver on a few Greek phrases. Hotel was a Great location, walk to everything needed. Small & Tiny elevator, kids ended up in the kitchen.
    Our view of the Acropolis and the Parthenon from our hotel room and the roof top bar.
    The Streets of Athens are vibrant but so relaxing.
    The colors are blues hues.
    The eateries are inviting with traditional music from the musicians.
    We ate sensational souvlakis and Baclava.
    Scattered amongst the trendy shops are market stalls and original ancient churches well preserved & open to visit.
    Back to the roof top for ouzo and this amazing view.    Weiterlesen

    Athens all day

    Our Hotel is in an amazing position, walk everywhere. Hotels we stayed at provided fantastic breakfasts to start our days. Today we caught a bus 🚌 for an “Viator” Athens Half Day Sightseeing Tour with tickets to the Acropolis.
    Nearly everyone was on time (Matilda).
    Travel to the Acropolis and Parthenon with an amazing, passionate tour guide called Dora. With our earpieces in, she shared with us her expansive knowledge of everything ancient and current Greek. She explained the history of the Parthenon, The Temple of Athena Nike and the Erechtheion. The Parthenon dedicated to the Godess Athena.
    The history dated back to 1200 BC, it included the destruction of the building in 480BC by the Spartens/Persians and the rebuild of some of the structure.
    The discussion included the Greek Gods Athena, Poseidon, Pericles, the religious influences including catholic, Orthodox, and the effects of the Ottoman empire etc. Free time to explore with the other 1000 tourists, try and visit when the cruise boats aren’t coming in to port at the same time. Wear good shoes marble, uneven steps. Back on the bus for a city tour and a stop at the Panathenaic Stadium, magnificent structure with its own sensational story and history of the Olympics. Built entirely of Marble held the first modern Olympic Games in 1896. We also learnt about the history of the Marathon.
    We travelled through Ancient Agora, passed the Temple of Olympian Zeus, The Temple of Hephaestus (dedicated to the God of Fire & Craftsmanship), Arch of Hadrian ( once marked the entrance to the city), The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier located at the Hellenic Parliament at Constitution Square where the Evzones are the Guards. Many more Government and Cultural Buildings were observed.
    We then went to The Plaka, the older part of Athens, Original Architecture and places of worship. Lunch before more walking and exploring meandered back to the hotel roof top. Athens is spectacular.

    We walked the streets of Athens exploring Syntagma Square (constitution Square) in the Central Square of Athens located in front of the Old Royal Palace housing the Greek Parliament.
    Through out Monastirake Square there are Byzantine Churches, Shopping and restaurants.
    Plaka is a must see (neighbourhood of the gods). Its a labyrinth of streets and neoclassical architecture.
    Amazing meal for dinner, huge meat plates and Aperol spritz shots. Waitress chain smoker, mutiple walking groups passed through the busy streets as we ate. This is an amazing lifestyle, eating out, glorious weather, so much to take in😍    Weiterlesen

    To Mykonos

    A few more pics of Athens.
    Picked up from hotel in a bus to the port (Piraeus). A million people queuing for all the ferries at the port to the islands. Boarded the ferry this am and yes it is like the instagram posts, masses of tourist with luggage board the boat ( its not even peak time) leave your case in the bottom of ferry and hope its still there at the end of the trip. Pre book ferry tickets so you have allocated seats, kiosk on board, on some Ferries you can go outside. Sea Ferries are great, mixed reports but they are a bit faster and fine to travel in. Get the app, its great for ticketing and schedule updates. Arrive at chaotic ports 1000s coming and going. Look like you are lost and a random uber driver will get you to your hotel and organise a pick up back the next day (even if there are 9 of you & its an 8 seater car) Barter for fee, but always tip, cash is King.
    Mykonos is exactly like the photos but then more.
    Elena Hotel was beautiful, great roof top views, amazing location, fantastic food. Walk to all locations including the windmills, Little Venice (homes/bars on the water front), old port, townhall, church Pangia. Negrita and all the bars quiet during the day but music & vibe pumping into the night, could hear it from our hotel.    Weiterlesen

    The lane ways, windmills, shops, churches, our hotel & its roof top views. Beyond words, this place is gorgeous, vibrant. The Greeks are so hospitable, proud of their businesses and keep their cafes/hotels etc clean & tidy.
    So many small family business, these are the places to seek out for service, authenticity and good prices, not always on the main streets.    Weiterlesen

    Mykonos evening

    It’s all about the best food and location.
    Nicks Taverna for dinner served by the cheeky waiter. Cocktails galore. Ouzo Shots (200ml bottle) Riley, Declan & Craig.
    The sea side taverns have great views and food but head to were the crowds are to experience the busy and entertaining restaurant staff & the passionate Owners.Weiterlesen

    Mykonos to Paros

    Ferry to Paros, always a game of cards.
    Arrive Mr & Mrs White, Naousa mid morning after taking a Bus from the Port. A “little” walk to the hotel (😳took a wrong turn) arrived to ice pineapple juice and a fantastic hotel with pools.
    Need to hire cars/buggies on this island to travel and explore.
    More Churches, more shops in Alleys. Tea at the port with Luke. Octopus drying during the day, served char grilled for tea.    Weiterlesen

    All Day Paros

    Drove to Parikia (Port) to Ekatontapiliahs (The Church of 100 doors).
    Explored this city then drove to Lefkes, a beautiful ancient town in the centre of Paros. So much to experience outside the main towns.
    Driving is an experience, ask Craig, driving on the opposite side of the road, with european controls, heading into oncoming traffic, windscreen wipers instead of blinker, narrow roads, massive cliff drops, no security fencing, streets that are actually too narrow for the car, & a hire car that had defective window mechanisms (sorry Dec) and stops and starts unpredictably.     All day Paros continued

    Drove to Ambeles for lunch at Christianna’s( recommended by locals) with Dec and Jess, sensational food.
    Great navigation by Dec👍
    Then a coastal trip via Pisso Livadi, Golden Beach, Tripiti, Faragas, Aliki back to Parikia and Naoussa for tea at the family owned resaurant (colored chairs)Weiterlesen

    A walk around the Port of Naoussa, there is a Venetian Castle (remains) in the port that was built to protect the island from pirates.
    Went to search for the best Loucoumades (greek donuts), found in a tiny shop front with donuts cooked to order.
    Also walked to Kolybithres & Pipen Beaches.

    Paros to Milos

    Bus back to the port, ferry to Adamas, Milos. Easy walk to accommodation at Santa Maria Village, nice accommodation. Arrived in the evening so walked into town for tea at the port.
    Early morning Uber to the port for Chartered catamaran, (Odysseus company) 9-6, complete lap of Milos Island.
    Big day on the water but lots of stops for swimming and eating, and Abba music. If you ever visit, hopefully you get to cruise with Fay, tiny, curly redhead greek with a hyper personality. This is a must, cruise around the island so the next day you know what to visit when you riding on your quad bikes (also a must do) on the Island.    Weiterlesen

    Milos cruising continued

    Our cruise included breakfast, lunch, snacks & drinks🥂🍻
    We sailed past the colored boat sheds and homes of Klima, the Catacombs and viewed the Venus de Milo Statue. Past the Ports of Plathiena, Tsigrado ( rickety ladder to beach), Firopotamos (Amphitheatrically built around boathouses), Sarakinko (moonscaped, white vocanic rock), all the way to Klefiko (hide out for pirate ships back in the day), Sikia back to Adamas.Weiterlesen

    Milos evening

    So many beautiful, colorful shops to wander around.
    After a day of cruising we headed to O’Harmas for tea.
    So popular, booked out and lines outside waiting. So worth the wait.
    Family owned business for generations. Have a farm where they grown their own organic produce, raise their own live stock including goats, chooks, lambs etc.
    The restaurant walls are adorned with original photos of the farm and the animals. So unique.

    Milos-Firopotamos & Sarakiniko

    Continued riding the quads around Milos to Firoptamos, an old fishing village that was once a summer resort for residence of Plaka. These beach front, colored cottages are unique. Tiny bar but not a commercial place, no shops, cafes. Boys swam out to the rock ( further than they thought😳).
    Beautiful water.
    Then on to the famous Sarakiniko with its greyish/white volcanic moonscape. One of the most photographed landscapes. There is a small beach between the rocks. Famous for rock jumping. We visited in the day and the evening then back to Adamas for gyoros at the port.    Weiterlesen

    Milos to Santorini

    Last night in Milos.
    Return quads and head to ferry.
    Arrive at port, take Uber to our hotel via the intense elevation with a steep road of 7 hairpin turns😵‍💫.
    Arrive at Bella Santorini in Perissa (opposite side of the island to the port).
    Aperol Sprit for a belated Birthday Celebration.
    Quite secluded but we hired cars and drove around the Island and actually good to be away from the crowds of Thira & Oia.    Weiterlesen

    Santorini-Perivolos Beach & Thira

    After arriving mid afternoon to accommodation we took a short walk to Perivolos Beach with its stunning black sand, sunbeds, bars and restaurants, in the evening the bars came to life with bands and music.
    We headed off to the Akrotiri peninsula to watch the sunset by the light house.
    Then drove to Thira (Fira), the capital of Santorini for tea in the city Square (Theotokopoulou). So much happening with all the shops, bars and restaurants busy. Amazing views in this city at night.
    Random fact, there are cats everywhere in Greece, not feral, but wander everywhere.    Weiterlesen

    Santorini-Oia & Ammoundi Bay

    Oia is the most visited village in Santorini. It sits high on a cliff overlooking the volcano, Nea Kameni. Still present are the ruins of a Venetian Castle, Castle of St Nikolas, built in 15th century. The Castle Fences are covered in padlocks. Oia so picturesque with white washed houses and labyrinth-like alleys, blue domed churches & packed with tourists. Donkey Beer is the local ale. 🍻
    Below the cliffs of Oia is Ammundi Bay. A free bus takes you down & back a the long track to the Bay. It was a quaint fishing village but now a busy boat port with amazing water front sea food restaurants. Around the rock corner is a popular ledge to jump off (Jacko & Luke). A great bay to sit & sip Expresso Freddos☕️    Weiterlesen

    Santorini-Pyrogos & Monestary

    Pyrogos is the former capital of Santorini. A gorgeous modest village , its main square green with tall pine trees, monuments & amazing panoramic views. We found an excellent cafe/restaurant for lunch (Kastelana), through the alleys near a church with more scenic views.
    We then travelled to the highest point on the island ( 567 meters above sea level), to the Monastery of Prophet Elias built in 1711. It is on the summit of Mount Profitis Ilias.
    On the way to Akrotiri we saw signs to the Red Beach, but ran out of time to visit.    Weiterlesen

    Santorini-Perissa & Akatori Ancient City

    Through the arch way at Bella Santorini you can see the Monastery on top of the summit.
    The kids are relaxing in their dressing gowns after relaxing in the spa on their balcony.
    The next highlight was the remains of the Akrotiri Prehistoric Village which dates back to 4000BC (Neolithic period). In the 17th Century BC an earthquake caused a volcanic eruption that destroyed Akrotiri. In 1860 archaeologist started to uncover the city. The evacuations continue, the site is a protected tourist attraction.
    We celebrated our last night in Greece at The Panorama Restaurant perched on a scenic hill above Akrotiri Bay, amazing sunset, views, food & company.
    Perfect end to our trip & celebration of Craig’s Birthday.    Weiterlesen

    Santorini-Athens-Dubai-Melbourne

    Santorini flight to Athens to Dubai to Melbourne and beyond for some.
    Had to add a few more pics of Greece, just cant get enough of these views and the quad bike adventure.
    A couple of meal dockets😵‍💫, some more beautiful colors, our happy couples, the donkeys, the important toilet information, plane flight info, more card games before departure.
    The adventure continues for Riley and Luke, Berlin, Amsterdam, Ibeza, Madrid & London etc. Georgie set off to meet a friend in Milan etc before meeting boys in London.
    Craig, Dec, Jess, Matilda, Jacko & I came home.

    Cycladic Islands colors

    In Greece the habit of painting the houseswhite dates back to 1938 during an outbreak of Cholera. A national order mandated whitewash houses with a paint that contained limestone, a powerful disinfectant, it sanitised the homes and reduced the spread of disease. The white wash walls also reflects the sunlight and keeps the interior cool.
    The blue was used for the shutters and doors which was left over from the painting of boats. The blue also wards off summer bugs, bad luck and is the color of the Aegean Sea.
    In 1967 the military dictatorship made blue and white coloring of Greek Island houses mandatory to inspire patriotism 🇬🇷 It is most common on the Cycladic Islands.
    The bougainvillea’s bright hues combat the harsh climate’s white, beautifying homes.    Weiterlesen

    The Churches

    There are many churches 🕍 in Greece and a lot are built and maintained by individuals rather than the main Orthodox Church. The Chapels are overseen by priests. Greeks are highly religious and spiritual. The tiny churches throughout the islands are usually open and due to the respectfulness of the people are never vandalised. Some countryside churches were erected in places where miracles were said to occur.
    Many of the towns and cities were build around the Churches.    Weiterlesen
