    Fairfield Glade

    June 11, 2021 in the United States ⋅ 🌧 68 °F

Well we are back on the road, taking a trip to rest and relax after the stress and exhaustion that came in the past few months as we packed up and sold our home for the last 32+ years. We came to Fairfueld Glade, between Knixville and Nashville on Tuesday, with a stop for lunch at Luella's BBQ and dessert at Whits frozen Custard. It has rained some every day that we have been here but we have also even able to walk every day, on beautiful trails throughout this community. Found a geocache and a model train display. Today we went to Oxone Falls, a somewhat treacherous rocky hike down to the base of the 100+ft falls. We stopped 2/3of the way down, just felt that was far enough on slippery wet rocks. It was beautiful. We have had several days of rest and now onto some adventures!Read more

  • Day 6

    Nashville

    June 13, 2021 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 79 °F

We took a great 3 Mile hike in the woods at Fairfield Glade before heading to Nashville. It was a challenging hike, with hills and switchbacks, but overall pretty exhilarating. Two hour drive to Nashville, we had lunch at a cute little Greek take out, then checked into the hotel. In the evening we went to the Nashville Sounds minor league baseball game, it was well attended, but the Sounds lost. Sunday means church, today was special because the pastor of the church we attended is the brother of a friend of mine in Baltimore. We had also been in a zoom study group last winter. We had lunch at Uncle Buds Catfish cabin, good southern cooking and sweet tea.
The high in Nashville today was 96, so we did our walking indoors at the Gaylord Opryland hotel, one of the 30 largest hotels in the world. It had three huge courtyards that were all like tropical gardens, it was really nice walking around. Quiet evening at the hotel.

  • Day 7

    Bowling Green KY

    June 14, 2021 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 75 °F

We started our morning with a walk around the Parthenon in downtown Nashville, then headed 2 hours north to Bowling Green KY. First stop was the National Corvette museum. Bowling Green is home to the only manufacturing plant for corvettes. Larry enjoyed it.
We had hoped to go to Manmoth Cave but I didn't make reservations in advance. So we went to Lost River Cave instead, and had a Cave tour on a boat. Above ground they had a really nice nature preserve, with trails, and a butterfly habitat. So we hiked another trail, saw a few butterflies and found a few geocaches. Dinner at a local wings place. Longer travel day tomorrow.

  • Day 9

    Birmingham/Montgomery, AL

    June 16, 2021 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 73 °F

We drove to Birmingham AL but the Civil rights museum and 16th St Baptist church (where 4 girls died when a bomb was thrown into the church) were both closed. So we checked into our lovely air bnb a little ways out in the country in Chelsea AL. It was a nice basement apartment, sndce stayed 2 nights. There was a swimming pool that we didn't use, and a pretty pond. The host was kind and friendly. We had dinner with and old friend from high school, Debbie Spray Tewes and her husband, we hadn't seen each other since high school over 50 yrs ago!!
Wednesday we drove down to Montgomery to visit the Civil Rights museum and the National Memorial for Peace and Justice, where there is memorials to over 4000 victims of lynching in the South. Sobering and thought provoking.

  • Day 13

    Chattanooga, TN

    June 20, 2021 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 81 °F

Drove from Atlanta to Chattanoofa. Tried to get tickets for the incline train up Lookout Mountain, but they were sold out for the rest of the day, so we had dinner at a local bar and grill, then went over to Ruby Falls. It is a 122 ft waterfall inside a cave. We hiked a half mile into the cave to see it, with a light show, then back out. It was fascinating and we got to see the cave formations up close as we walked. We did get a nice view overlooking Chattanooga from Ruby Falls entrance.Read more

  • Day 13

    Atlanta, GA

    June 20, 2021 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 75 °F

We drove to Atlanta on Thursday and went to a Braves baseball game, Larry's 19th major league stadium. And they won. Friday we went to Stone Mountain, the weather was beautiful and the park was not crowded. We rode the skyride to the top, and the train around the bottom. On Saturday we had planned to go downtown sightseeing, but it was Juneteenth celebration and downtown was packed with people celebrating, even though it rained much of the say. So we went to a mall near the hotel, walked and shopped, and then went to the theater there and saw In the Heights. Fun musical, well done. Sunday morning was still raining, lightly. We packed up and checked out if the hotel, and then went to the closest church, a wonderful black church called Eagles Nest. By the time church was done it had stopped raining and we took off for Chattanooga, TN.Read more
