We’re off the coast of New Zealand now! Our itinerary today was to cruise three famous New Zealand sounds: Milford, Doubtful and Dusky. The weather did not cooperate, and we were unable to visit Milford Sound. We were however able to visit Doubtful and Dusky, all of which are part of Fiordland National Park, a UNESCO world heritage site.
Oceania provides expert commentary when cruising these types of areas, covering historical information as well as wildlife sightings. We learned that Doubtful Sound was named Patea by Maori settlers. Patea translates to “the place of silence” which makes perfect sense. Dusky Sound is called Tamatea in Māori and is 40 kilometres long.
Some scenes of Lord of the Rings were filmed in these sounds.Read more
Two to TravelIf you hadn’t said that you missed out on Milford Sound, I would have thought this was taken there. Very similar scenery.
