Rome to Home
October 10, 2022 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C
And in a blink of an eye our glorious five weeks in Italy is over and we sadly start the long journey home. This is when I get really jealous of the lucky people who live a hop, skip and a jump away from Italy, the lucky people who don’t have to endure a 24+ hour flight to visit the place they love most in the world. It is obviously worth it as we will be coming back.
Here is our trip wrap-up:
We visited 14 Italian towns, visited 21 churches, climbed 3 towers and saw so many historic sites. We walked almost 300 000 steps, 200km and 316 flights of stairs.
Most overwhelming cathedral – Basilica of San Francesco d’ Assisi
Town with sites we loved the most – Parma – The Baptistry and Monastery
Towns we want to revisit - Assissi, Pienza
We tried 44 different gelato flavours
Most expensive gelato - Siena but it was delicious
Favourite flavour - Amarena (black cherry) and we had a lot of these
Weirdest flavour - Zucca (pumpkin) We tried this on our food tour and were not fans
We ate way too many pastas and types to count
Best food – Modena
Worse food – Como (also had some amazing food here too. Just the location of our worse meal for the whole trip - we know we shouldn't eat in the tourist places - lesson learnt)
Best complimemtary snack with drinks - San Gimignano
Most interesting food presentation - Meat "laundry" in Pienza
Fanciest meal - Orvieto at Labirinto di Adriano, a fabulous restaurant with a labyrinth of underground tunnels and caves, and also amazing food
Things to remember - piazza with four toppings is a topping in each quarter. Not four toppings together
Favourite drink - Hugo
Lowlights – bad weather in Como – changed all our plans of being on the water every day
Highlights – catching up with family in Rome and Milan and seeing Bruno again in San Gimignano
Prettiest town – Pienza
Most colourful town – Modena
Most relaxing town – Arezzo
Favourite town - impossible to pick one as we love all Italy has to offer
Until next time, Grazie Italia, grazie mille. Hai il mio cuore!Read more
