First day of the third interrail journey.

I am sure it's a pretty city but like all Swiss city I am visiting with Arushi, it's just too expensive to do anything so the impression remain dulled by the inability of our poverty.Read more

  • Ravensburg

    February 9, 2023 in Germany

Got bored marinating in the hotel room and took the train. The name of Ravensburg has echoed to deeply from all sorts of memories from my childhood to pass up on the opportunity. Turned out to be rather comfy and nestled in city, although very Swabian.

I did not, for some reason, discover the Puppenkiste nor, for some reason, made any effort to find not even Google it.

  • Lille

Stuck in Lille due to train strike (50 % pretended to my GF to stay a day longer). Walked 32k steps circles through the city. Drunk walking and ending up in sketchy hotel that turned out alright. I rather liked Lille but I am not sure there are reason to return.

Generally, am connecting very much with the Northern Part or Belgium and France. Through the fog it feels like traveling back fifteen years in time with these nestled in understated streets and and bars manned with men and women of just the right amount of chatty drunkenness.

Well, actually, there is one: couldn't go to Dunkirk due to the weekly strike of trains in France and though I wasn't aware of it before, it's now on my list of cities to visit.

  • Lyon

    February 17, 2023 in France

Really starting to feel homely in Lyon. Took the 5.53 am train from Lille, and, again, just loved it getting up early. It's not even that painful or freezing anymore to turn on the blinding light first and swing my body out of the bed. Even after only 5 hours or sleep

Had a very productive train journey and finished, finally, up on some long overdue work. The restaurant of the TGV was closed but they had put out free water to drink, which I found to be the least German thing anyone can do. Another mosaic in France growing on me. Guess I am entering the phase where idealizing every aspect of the country I am.

After arriving in Lyon at 9 am instead of going straight home, I decided to continue my work streak in a local cafe. Kept working till 1 and headed out for Eritrean lunch. Which, for the record, was very delicious but also mysteriously bland at the same time.

On the way home I saw a village worth visiting before we move away from Bellegarde: Virieu-le-Grand-Belley.

Medieval farm stays surrounding a castle or monestry against he backdrop of an mountain that looks like a fossilized penis.

    💯 Don't forget.

  • Antwerpen

    March 15, 2023 in Belgium ⋅ ☁️ 7 °C

Out of a 7 day trial and taking a long detour via night train from Arnhem back to Switzerland, I just needed to have a transfer in Antwerpen on my way to Rotterdam and Den Haag.

Got ambushed, however, by the vibe of the city after taking just a step out of my train. Coming out you look up and see 3 stories of train tracks looming over you on different levels.

Climbed up the floors only to realize I was actually rising to the ground level and was greeted by the train station, an marble palace guarded by an golden eagle, encompassed in a much larger super structure almost like ship in a bottle with the interior more akin to an kings opera than a train station.

You can see why the city took so much effort to incorporate this legacy station into and almost erotically complex of new infrastructure.

If that wasn't enough, right out of the gate of already overwhelmingly impressive train station there is the Zoo of Antwerpen, as old as the train station itself, right in the heart of the city.

Now if that still wasn't enough just 100 steps further was the entry to what I assume is the equivalent of China Town of Antwerpen.

So many interesting things just within 3 minutes of leaving the train station, I overstayed and spend three hours in the city.

Ended up walking into what I thought was a church but turned out to be the former trading hall of the second largest port of Europe, with all it's restored splendor and touristic Charme.

Might be the coolest city to leave a first impression I've seen in a while and ai definitely want to return

  • Den Haag

    March 15, 2023 in the Netherlands ⋅ ☁️ 8 °C

Antwerpen took to much from me, and then I wasted additional time to look for beer I didn't really want to drink. I had to pick the pace to reach the ocean. Took me half an hour from the train station and when I walked to the final street of the small hill before the ocean, I felt like traveling back to Bretagne. The sea was grey and rough and full of surfers painting the waves in their black diving suits. Had only very little time but enjoyed it my short breath of ocean air. Would have loved to go for a short swim in the winter sea.

Hopefully I can return next week.
