• Chiang Mai Day 3

    February 2, 2024 in Thailand ⋅ ☀️ 86 °F

Today we woke up, went downstairs for a coffee and got ready for our 11:00am lunch reservation. We had great lunch at a Michelin recommended restaurant. After lunch we went to the flower festival and walked around for a bit. Next we grabbed a cab and went to Loi Kroh road where all the action is, we walked for a bit and purchased tickets for a Muai Thai Fight. The fight does not start until 9:00pm so we went and got massages and a snack at the italian restaurant from the night before. After a glass of wine at a cute wine bar we went back to Loi Kroh street and experienced the crazy busy night markets. The streets were lined with never ending vendors and street food. We really enjoyed the one very modern market with food stalls and live music.

We arrived at the fight club, sat ring side and watched fights until after midnight. Klaus was so excited to watch this and I was glad it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be.

We grabbed a cab back to the hotel, lights out, this is the latest we have stayed awake since getting sick. Off to Phuket tomorrow!!!!

  • Chiang Mai Day 2

    February 1, 2024 in Thailand ⋅ ☀️ 86 °F

We woke up, got dressed and headed downstairs for our driver to pick us up. I had made arrangements with the driver from the day before to set everything up for me because he was not available today. Let’s just say the car was very very very old and the air barely worked. We knew this was not going to be a day of comfort for driving but everything was already booked for the day. I was bummed and frustrated but oh well, we have a full day ahead of us.

    - Visit one of the most beautiful temples in Chiangmai, Wat Ban Den
    - Visit Dantewada Angel Park, one of the most popular parks among Thai tourists for making pictures.
    - Enjoy 40-minute bamboo rafting along the stream in the mountains
    - Lunch, Thai buffet lunch
    - Experience elephant sanctuary, feeding, bathing and learning about elephants from their mahouts.
    - Visit and enjoy Sticky Waterfall, climbing this unique limestone waterfall.

We enjoyed all the activities of the day but especially the elephant sanctuary. I also really liked the waterfall, you walk all the way down via a staircase and back up to the top of waterfall on the rocks that aren’t slippery. Hence the name sticky waterfall.

We arrived back to the hotel, dropped our bags and went for 2 hour massages at a place that has all former incarcerated woman working for them. Why not support the rehabilitation program 😂😂

After massages we had a great dinner at a little Italian restaurant. We grabbed a cab back to the hotel and lights out by 9:00.

  • Sidemen Bali

    Jan 27–29, 2024 in Indonesia ⋅ 🌧 84 °F

Our next stop is Sidemen which is located East Bali. This is much quieter than U bud and surrounded by rice fields. We will be staying the next two nights at the beautiful Wapa Di Ume hotel. Once again the balinese people are so kind and welcoming. We checked in and got a tour of the property before making our way to our beautiful room. After getting settled we had lunch and hung out by the pool for the afternoon. We got back to our room and the staff had turned down the bed and arranged the netting around the bed. It looked like straight out of a fairytale. After showering and reading for a few minutes I was once again asleep before 8:00pm 😂

We woke up the next morning and went on a guided 45 walk through the rice fields. It was an adventure, that included a couple missteps luckily no injuries. Back at the hotel we had a coffee and tea at the restaurant while the staff prepared our floating breakfast. After our amazing breakfast enjoyed in our pool we spent the afternoon at the main pool. Klaus took a walk along the river that runs along the property while I read. We finished lunch just as the rain clouds rolled in. We got back to our room just in time, the rest of the afternoon was spent watching the incredible storm from our room. We walked into the village and had dinner at Asri, it is the first night in Bali we made it to dinner and stayed awake past 8pm. We walked back to the hotel, got ready for bed and lights out around 9pm.

  • U Bud Day 3 & 4

    January 25, 2024 in Indonesia ⋅ 🌩️ 88 °F

Today we woke up, had breakfast and our driver picked us up for another day of action.
Our first adventure was ATV riding thru the jungle followed by lunch at their pool club. It was super fun, we got very dirty and the scenery was beautiful. Our next stop was a quick stop to see the lake and volcano of Mount Batur, it was a 20 degree temperature change but felt great. After the volcano we drove to the traditional Tenganan Pegeringsingan Village. It’s claimed to be one of the cleanest villages in the world and each family opens their doors to everyone whom visits. You are able to see how they live and purchase goods from them. We got back to the hotel left our back packs at the front desk and got a ride to downtown U Bud. It’s absolutely crazy busy with the cars and scooters traffic jams and chaos. There is tons of shops and restaurants that line the busy streets. We had a snack and a glass of prosecco before making our way back to the hotel.

We woke up, and had an early breakfast before hanging out at the pool for a couple of hours. We Packed our bags and the driver picked us up for our next part of the journey in Sideman (east Bali). On our way to Sidemen we stopped and saw a beautiful waterfall.

  • U Bud Bali Day 1 &2

    Jan 24–27, 2024 in Indonesia ⋅ ☁️ 88 °F

We arrived in Bali made it through immigration and customs and met our driver to take us to the hotel and excursions for the next few days. On our way to the hotel we stopped for a meal over looking the rice fields and got to witness a ceremony where the local people take offerings to the temple.

1 1/2 hours later we arrived to the beautiful Kayon Valley Resort, it is absolutely beautiful and tucked away in the jungle about 10 min from the crazy of downtown U Bud. The staff is welcoming and accommodating. They drove us part way down the hill on a golf cart then we tracked by foot to room 304. Absolutely beautiful!!! After getting situated we had a couples massage at the spa. We got cleaned up and had dinner at our hotel which included a live show of traditional dances. After dinner we went back to the room and lights out. Unfortunately neither of us are 100percent yet and very tired.

Day 2 - We woke up, got dressed and went to breakfast. After breakfast our driver picked us up for a full day of activities. We started with a 60 min traditional dance that tells a story of good vs evil and a little humor thrown in. After the dance we went to a coffee plantation which includes that super expensive coffee that the animal eats the berries and poops out a bean 🫘. Unfortunately they put sugar in all their coffee and tea when they brew it so it was tooooo sweet for us. Next stop Monkey forest, it was fun to walk around the beautiful grounds and see all the monkeys. Our driver dropped us off in downtown Ubud for a yummy lunch. We were supposed to call him when done but unfortunately I left my phone in his car. Luckily Klaus had find my iphone on for me and we walked 7 min to a parking lot where after a couple rounds we found the car but not the driver. 😂😂 We sat around for about 20 min until Klaus finally found him at the local mart. Leave it to me to mess something up! We went to the rice field village next where we got our pictures taken on the famous swings and I went zip lining. The evening ended back at the hotel, a quick swim in our pool, a bath and nighty night.

  • Singapore

    January 21, 2024 in Indonesia ⋅ ⛅ 90 °F

Boarded the Singapore Airlines flight and got settled into the super large and comfy first class seats. The champagne was wonderful and our coughs are under control for the moment. A couple hours into the flight and it all went downhill, I spent the next 10 hours in misery with a head ache, body aches and cough. Unfortunately we could not get the full experience of a flight we had been looking forward to.

We arrived at the Clan hotel and so went straight to bed. We would spend the next couple of days mainly sleeping and miserable.😞

I had made reservations at Spago Lounge months ago and we didn’t want to miss it. We got dressed and went out for a couple of hours. The Marina Bay Sands Hotel was something like we have never seen before.

On the final day we managed to walk around for a bit and went on the carousel, which happens to be the largest in Asia. Did a river boat cruise, saw the light show at Gardens by the bay and tried Chicken Satay. Our final stop was the famous Hawker Center from the movie Crazy Rich Asians, where we tried some traditional food.

Went back to the hotel and got organized for an early flight to Bali.

  • A Week in Nuremberg

    January 14, 2024 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 32 °F

Arrived in Nuremberg, checked into the Karl August Hotel and walked to an amazing Italian restaurant for dinner. After dinner we came back to the hotel and went to the Sauna for a bit.

Day 2- Klaus worked today and I was lazy and relaxed. I finally got moving and had dinner at a cute wine bar. When Klaus got back to the hotel we went to a cute bar and had a glass of wine, a Sarti Spritz (It’s a take on an aperol but with a liquor called Sarti) and a cheese plate with the most delicious fig and horseradish jelly. Off to bed, Klaus has an early morning.

Day3- Klaus went to work for the day, I froze my butt off and walked around. Klaus got back and we had dinner at an Indian restaurant, not normally something we would choose but the food was great!

Day 4- Klaus was up early again for work and I was slow to get moving 😂😂. Once again I walked around the charming town freezing my butt off with the rain snow mix. Did a little shopping and met Klaus back at the hotel. Tonight we walked to greek restaurant with once again amazing food. Unfortunately we ordered a grilled platter and I was unaware that the entire thing was pork 😂😂😂😂 needless to say they were quick to remedy the situation and got me a plate of grilled lamb so yummy!!!! Ended the evening at the hotel bar with an aperol and espresso martini.

Day 5- We woke up and were supposed to drive to Stuttgart then Munich but Klaus is sick again with the never ending cough. Grabbed some cough drops, a cappuccino and a cake called bienenstich. (one of his grandmas favorites) 🍰 We drove to Munich did a little shopping and ended up at the doctors hoping to get medicine to control the cough on the 12 hour flight tomorrow. Checked into the Hilton at the Airport grabbed a little dinner and rearranged the suitcases, we will only be taking carry-ons for the Asia trip. The larger suitcases will be stored at the airport until we return for our flight home to USA. Super excited to ditch the cold, bring on the heat and sunshine. ☀️

Day 6- I unfortunately have the cough also. 😞😞 Barely slept, loaded up on medicine and made it to the lounge for a mimosa before our flight. ✈️

  • Heading Home

    October 18, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 48 °F

Woke up early, finished packing and headed to the airport. There was a beautiful sunrise that we were lucky enough to see from the rental car parking lot. We only got lucky enough to see this because I had Klaus drop the car off at Hertz, only to discover we rented from Avis and had to load everything back in the car and drive to a different level. We Navigated the VAT tax process, security, and had breakfast with a cappuccino and
    prosecco before heading home!

  • 3 Days in Düsseldorf

    October 15, 2023 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ 52 °F

We flew in from Olbia, grabbed our car and checked into the beautiful Living Hotel De Medici. A quick drop of the bags and we made our way to lunch, we went to a wine bar/deli called Ghorban that has a location in Aachen also that I love and this was equally great!! Next we walked to a very cool wine bar down the street, it was a cool atmosphere with stone walls and ceilings and as the evening progressed it had a lively crowd. Hours later and we were hungry, so of course what’s better than a döner kebab 🤣. We walked home while freezing our butts off and eating our sandwiches. A fun end to a great day!! Day 2- Klaus had an early morning dentist appointment, he brought back cappuccinos and delicious french pastries for breakfast in bed. He had to get changed for business meetings and I got cleaned up and spent the day exploring. We checked out a couple other wine bars and went to a tapas place for dinner. Day 3- Breakfast in bed again! Klaus left for meetings and I spent the day walking around and doing a little shopping. Klaus got back and met me for a glass of wine and dinner at an Italian restaurant. Early night to bed, we fly home tomorrow.Read more

  • A few days in Alghero Sardinia

    October 13, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 84 °F

Our few days in Alghero were low key and lovely. Day 1- We woke up, had our cappuccinos over looking the water, and walked around the town for a couple of hours . We got back to the hotel and enjoyed the beautiful pool for the day. We got cleaned up for dinner and drove about 20 minutes away to an amazing Michelin restaurant located on a farm, the family makes all the sausages, cheese, vegetables, and raise the animals that they serve. It was incredible food, atmosphere and experience!! Day 2 - we drove to a beautiful beach around 25 min away from the hotel. We spent the day enjoying the water, sunshine and a great homemade pasta lunch at the beach restaurant. After getting cleaned up back at the hotel we walked the charming streets to dinner. It was a fabulous dinner with amazing flavors and presentation of food. We spent the rest of the evening walking around, listening to some live music and having a gelato. Day 3- After a cappuccino and a small breakfast we got cleaned up and packed for our drive to Olbia. A couple hours later we arrived and explored the town. Unfortunately, during our lunch we got notification that the dolphin sunset kayaking tour we were supposed to do was canceled because of the wind. We drove to the hotel and read by the pool before getting changed for dinner. The restaurant at the hotel had just been awarded a Michelin star and we were blown away by the food and presentation. We were so sad to leave the beautiful sunshine and weather of Sardinia. The island is amazing and we will definitely be back to explore the southern region next time.Read more

  • Castelsardo Sardinia

    October 11, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 75 °F

We woke up and checked out of the hotel in La Maddalena, boarded the ferry and made our way back to the Port of Palau. Our only plan was to drive to Castelsardo, but as per usual, our driving adventures are never just a straight shot. We drove past a cute restaurant along the way and decided to turn around for what ended up being an amazing wine, incredible focaccia, and a delicious tuna tartare. We finally made our way to our hotel called Bajaloglia Resort. We got checked in and headed to the pool for a few hours before changing and having a beautiful dinner at the hotels Michelin star restaurant. The next morning we had breakfast checked out of the hotel, and made our way to the town of Castelasardo. This fortress and castle dates back to 1270AC and is considered one of the top 100 Italian villages. We toured the castle, museums and charming streets before grabbing an amazing lunch with wine over looking the water. We over stayed our parking pass and got a ticket because while sitting there I decided to look in the vineyards that we might explore on our way to the next town. Two beautiful vineyards later, amazing wine, food, conversation and most of all memories we arrived at our destination, Villa Mosca Charming House. This very charming house does not have an elevator and we were located on the 3rd floor!!! I grabbed a jacket and we went for a walk that included an amazing sunset with aperols. The perfect ending to a perfect day!!!!Read more

  • La Maddalena Sardinia

    October 7, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 77 °F

We woke up at 2:30am for our 4:30am flight to Olbia Sardinia. Upon arrival we waited an hour for the car rental company to open. We made our way to the ferry port in Palau. Klaus stayed in the car queue while i jumped out and grabbed our tickets. Klaus engaged the parking brake and we made our way to the bar for an aperol and croissant for the 20 minute boat ride. The scenery was breathtaking and the sunshine felt amazing!!! We arrived on the island, checked into the hotel and spent the afternoon walking the streets and shops. We had a lovely dinner and a wine bar with great food but not our favorite wine. It was a long day and we were exhausted, off to bed for the sailing trip tomorrow.

Day 2- We woke up changed and had a quick bite to eat before walking to the marina. After waiting a few minutes. we got the call the board the boat. There was a total of eight of us for the day, a family of four from Germany and two childhood best friends from France. We had such a magical day going to different islands only accessible by boat, getting to know the fellow passengers, drinking prosecco, and eating homemade prepared food. The water was the clearest blue water we have ever seen, a little chilly for me but Klaus loved the swimming and snorkeling. We stopped at a cute restaurant on the walk home for an aperol and cheese board with nothing but different flavored pecorino cheese, yummy!!! A quick change of clothes and off to dinner and a highly rated pizza restaurant. The pizza was great but once again the wine just so so. Of course we had to have a little bite of gelato before going to bed.

Day 3- So we had a real debate today, stay and explore the island more or check out and head to Corsica. After weighing the options and timing we decide to drive to the only other island/part of the national park of La Maddalena, accessible by car called Caprera. The drive itself was an adventure that started with going over a bridge with breathtaking views and bumpy rural roads that had jaw dropping scenery every turn of a corner. We were not prepared to hike to some of the many remote beaches so we chose to go to the main accessible beach with rental chairs and a restaurant for the day. It was a perfect day of crystal clear water, beautiful sunshine, and a wonderful lunch. After driving back and getting cleaned up, we had dinner at a seafood restaurant. Klaus got the catch of the day which he picked out of the case and chose his cooking of choice. So not my thing, he warned me against my choice of a steak in Italy, fortunately it wasn’t so bad after I sent it back to be further cooked 😂. We ended our evening with some more gelato and goodnight kiss. 💋

  • A Magical Couple of Days in Bruges

    October 2, 2023 in Belgium ⋅ ☁️ 75 °F

We landed in Frankfurt at 8:30am, picked up our rental car and made our way to Bruges Belgium. Thank goodness Klaus is an energizer bunny because I was exhausted and slept most of the 5 hour drive. We arrived at our beautiful hotel called the Dukes Palace (a local told us former US presidents have stayed there) changed our clothes and headed out to explore. Of course first on my bucket list was the canal boat ride, it did not disappoint!! We grabbed a glass of bubbly and enjoyed the sunshine and scenery before walking to dinner. Unfortunately and fortunately the place I originally wanted to eat at was closed and we ended up getting a table at a wonderful restaurant with an amazing staff and incredible local dishes. The exception was the bottle of wine that is from Italy, Klaus is now in the process of finding a way to have it imported. We walked back to the hotel through the winding magical streets.

Day 2- We had plans of waking early and that did not happen!! We slept until 12:00pm, which I guess is technically only 6am US time but boy did our bodies need it. After a great breakfast and a cute cafe we spent the rest of the afternoon exploring bridges, tasting the local waffles, chocolate, beer and enjoying a bottle of the locally produced Belgium bubbly at a beautiful champagne bar. Next stop was a very trendy cocktail bar located in a different part of town away from the tourist area, we had amazing cocktails and chatted for an hour with the owners, who happened to be the brother in law of the owners of restaurant we were having dinner at called Tom’s Diner. The atmosphere and food were perfect. We walked back to the cocktail bar for a night cap and ended up spending over an hour chatting with two gentleman that were from Boston traveling for a Rugby Tournament. Back to the hotel, we realized we were hungry and had not tried the famous fries yet. We walked to the market square and ordered Fritz from the food truck, yummy! Unfortunately, it was after midnight, and we had to be up at 5:30 in the morning to head to Düsseldorf Germany. I cannot wait to visit Bruges again and all the other magical cities that Belgium has to offer.
