  • Day 2 - the long haul

    December 12, 2024 in Australia ⋅ 🌙 23 °C

Slight panic with tube delays, but didn't affect us and we got to Heathrow on time (30 minutes). Checked into Lounge, but not so good as breakfast was tasteless and couldn't pour our own drinks. Onto the very long and cramped flight ✈️. Absolutely endless and almost unbearable, but 3 films later and some short sleeping stints we land in Perth (incredible view of the coast and Rottness island) to be greeted by Hen and El. Stifling heat meets us, and we drive back in Hens' work truck. Lovely little apartment. Not too tired for an afternoon/evening visit to local Scarborough beach where we had a pint at the Sandbar, plus some nice street food finished by a glorious sunset 🌇. Great vibe - we can see the Oz appeal 😀Read more

  • Day 3 - settling in

    December 13, 2024 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

Maybe part of the jetlag, but despite an early night (8.30pm), we were both awake by the early hours. Went for a walk with Ellie to the local green space (Carine), which was really lovely. Spacious, lots of different birds and bird sounds - did we hear the laughing kookaburra? Plus 'beware the snakes' signs. In the afternoon, we popped to the local retail park for a wander (2 minutes up the road). Including Aldis, McDonald's, Woolworths etc). Also popped to a lovely shopping mall so that Helen could sort her Rayban sunglasses. In the evening, we went to Froth ( north beach) for a beer and some lovely pizza 🍕 before another early nightRead more

  • Day 4 - Rottnest

    December 14, 2024 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

Up at 6.00 to drive to Hillarys Harbour for the 7.30 ferry ⛴️ . Hired some bikes and took the 45 minute ride across to the Island. Popped to the Bakery for some breakfast and encountered our first quokkas, scavenging for nibbles. Short ride over to pinky beach and the basin for some swimming, snorkeling and sunbathing. Then onto more gorgeous bays at Geordie, Longreach and Parakeet for more swimming. Met some people that Hen and El knew who had moved over from Syndey (Lydia's friend Angel) then stopped for lunch at a beachside cafe and finished with a pint by the port, surrounded by loads of quokkas (probably did 8 miles on the bikes) Ferry back, then Hen did a barbie for all of us before another early night (9pm)Read more

  • Day 5 - Freo

    December 15, 2024 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

Walked the park and saw an Ibis and a Kookaburra, plus a Baseball game about to start. Visited the shops in Carine and tried to get our Transperth travelcard, but they are sold out. Hen and El took us to Fremantle where we visited the Shipwreck museum, saw the Bon Scott statue, went to the vibrant Market (had yummy steak and chips) and had a pint in the Brewery where a tiny boy played some White stripes! They dropped us in Scarby for an evening pint, but it was a bit blowy. There was a Xmas concert on in the amphitheatre. Home for an early night 🌙 😴Read more

  • Day 6 - into the City

After a wander, we found the Lucky shag and had a nice view onto the Margaret River estuary and shared a burger and some wine. December 17, 2024 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Did a Carine Park walk spotting some black swans this time! Mark had a coffee with Eddie Bartnik, then we got the train to Freo, via Perth. Had more of a wander today and stumbled upon the Federal Boutique Hotel. Had great value Steak sandwich and Thai beef salad meals (£7 each) washed down with lovely IPAs. Also eavesdropping on a guy who was sailing the whole coastline of Australia, having started in August, 8000 miles to go! Market wasn't open, so popped (spotted our 1st Pelican) to lovely Cottesloe for a swim in the surf, then home via Leederville Tapas for a wine as the sun went down. • Day 9 - the Wynn gang arrive

    December 19, 2024 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

Well, they actually arrived yesterday. All went for a walk down the park, all lovely and then the tiredness caught up with Wynn and he had a proper boohoo. Decided to venture north up the new train line extension to Yanchep. Felt like the middle of nowhere. Got a bus to the retail park, then wandered to the coast. There is a lagoon there, but we didn't make it as the wind was howling and the sea conditions were super rough. Train to glendalough, needed a snack - fish at the chippy, then the bus to ScarboroughRead more

Got picked up by our hosts - wine for dudes - and onto the first of several vineyards, all very different. Also, a chocolate place and ending with a Brewery. We won't mention the rude dude moment that led to festering anger and a rant argument back at base when having our barbeque. Put a downer on the day that Ellie did her best to resolve the next morningRead more

Having exchanged the hat and got the charm, we suffered a Xmas present wrapping masterclass 🤣 and got the bus back to find the kids in full meal preparations. December 25, 2024 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

After opening the secret santa, we got all packed up and headed to head to the coast. 1st spot was too windy, so went to a spot nearer to Scarby beach, but off the sand, on the grass. Atmosphere was already bouncing with music and big family barbies on the go. Got the gazebo up and settled in with some music and drinks. The wagyu beef on the barbie was amazing, and we bumped into Angel and her boyfriends parents again, next door to us. Managed a dip in the very rough and powerful surf and then went back home after a lovely, full, but surreal dayRead more

  • Day 18 - down south

    December 28, 2024 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

Woke up early and had a coffee at the van that had parked up next to us. Hit the road south, which was really different, eventually becoming a forest road. We saw a big lizard, ostriches, emus, and dead kangaroos sadly. Arrived in Denmark, had a beer at the hotel where they said we could stay, but chatted ro a local (from Chippenham!) who'd lived in Oz since '82 who offered his place if desperate. Walked to the Denmark tavern for a beer, then ended up at Rockcliffe winery, had 🍕 and wine and stayed thereRead more

  • Day 19 - Denmark

    December 29, 2024 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

Got up quite late at our vineyard campground and headed into Denmark. Needed to sort tonight's stay and our new friend Neil had offered us to stay at his, but then the Ocean beach campsite got in touch to say they had an unpowered site. Near the beach and fancied a shower, so took it. Visited Elephants rock and Green pools, which was lovely, but the weather wasn't great. Had a pie and a pint in town, then over to the site. A bit like a Calais shanty town, so not great, but showered and walked to the beach where there was loads of wildlife. Bed earlyRead more

  • Day 20 - Valley of the giants

    December 31, 2024 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

Left the site early to get to the walk early. Relatively quiet, so good timing. Once we were on the walkway and moving upwards, Mark was beginning to worry his panic behaviour would set in, but we overcame it and reached the 40m high point. Wow, how amazing to experience the majesty of these trees up high! Did the low level walk as well. Almost got lost worrying about fuel on the way back, but made it to Pemberton. Spotted a WALES caravan in the car park and chatted to the guy from Llanelli who has lived here for 15 years. Then chatted to some older couples in the hotel, the sisters having moved over in the early 70s as girls. Lovely people again. Managed to get a cancellation in Augusta and made it there for a pint over the estuary. Watched a tiny bit of Gavin and Stacey, then bed. Mark had met a guy from Barry who had lived here since the 80s - should have asked if he knew LeightonRead more

  • Day 21 - Peppy Grove

    December 31, 2024 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Had a walk from the campsite, to Granny's pool, then headed to Cosy corner beach for an hour. A bit of beach time then up to Margaret River for lunch at 'Normal van cafe'. Hotting up now 🥵. Onto our campsite for the next few days, just north of Busselton. Lovely site right next to a beach where we went for a quick wander with a wine. Back to base for some new years eve vibes with our music before crashing out, too tired to make it to midnight. Happy New year 🎉Read more

  • Day 25 - time for home

    January 4, 2025 in England ⋅ ☁️ -1 °C

Sadly our last day, so we made sure we did a last wall around Carine Park, say some red tailed cockatoos and our kookaburra again. Had a quick coffee at Trigg beach with Hen and El, then they took us to the airport for our rescheduled flight. With a bit of help we managed the check and the luggage drop, but still a bit nervous about whether we'd be reunited come London! Had a couple of final beers in the sun, then got our delayed Malaysian Airlines flight to Kuala Lumpur (6 hours). A Qantas rep had told me we'd need to collect our cases and re-check them in, but not sign of them and needed to really hurry to get our next connection as the passport control was so stupidly slow. We were last passengers on with 10 minutes to spare! Phew. This was the long haul - 13 hours, watched some films and managed to get some snatches of sleep. On arrival in Amsterdam we discovered our flight had been cancelled due to snow, so pushed onto the next flight ✈️ with BA, which was then further delayed. Eventually took off close to 2pm because of another issue, but we did get our cases back 🧳 Discovered our original direct flight had landed in London at 5.30 am, so we've had to endure 3-legged flight and arrived 8.5 hours late. Qantas you've got a compo claim coming 😬. Eventually home to pick up Charlie at 7.30pm, an epic journey of over 36 hours! However, it's been a wonderful Aussie adventure 🐨 🦫 🦘 🦜🚍Read more
