    Finally arrived after a long flight to lovely warm weather.
    Then got a good gym workout carrying our suitcases up the train station stairs as the escalator wasn't working 💪 .

    Hannah's tour part 1

    So good to finally see Hannah after so long.
    We were in tour guide Hannah's hands. It's the Pride festival, so there are rainbows everywhere.
    First stop, the town hall where the first gay
    marriage took place. (The guard said its so everyone can be miserable not just heterosexual couples).
    We then wandered down past the exclusive shops to Nyhaven where the canal is lined with the colourful houses/shops. Originally painted colourful so seafarers could find their house    Les mer

    Hannah's tour part 2

    Off to see the Little Mermaid via the Royal Palace. Unfortunately Mary wasn't in so no vegemite sandwiches for us. Instead we saw the changing of the guards.
    Checked out the famous Nyboder houses(small house) , also known as yellow houses, commissioned by King Christian lV for naval personal
    In 1631. Painted yellow because it was cheap to mix ochre with lime.
    Finally arrived quickly walk through the Citadel before a delicious Cambodian dinner.    Les mer

    Seeing Wildlife

    The only way to start today was to go to HUG, a totally gluten free bakery. It was a hard choice ad everything looked delicious. After our stomachs were filled it was off to the museum of natural history to see the wildlife photographer of the year exhibition. Such talent, stunning photos and quite a few Aussie photographers..
    Off to the markets to buy food for our picnic in the Botanical Garden, where we saw a few red squirrels, so cute. Then time for a drink at Le Petite Wine Bar 🍷    Les mer

    Off to see Rosenborg Castle, built by King Christian lV in the 1600s.
    The Danish crown jewels and royal regalia reside here and can only be worn in Denmark by the sitting queen.
    The Brilliant Set is the most valuable

    Cultural day continues

    After this morning effort, it was time to indulge in a traditional sweet, marzipan topped with a whipped flavoured filling coated in chocolate. So delicious 😋 .
    Then onto Christianborg Palace Chapel,1738, where royal marriages, christening and funerals take place. Up the Christianborg Palace Tower to see the view.
    The day ended at VillaVino wine bar .

    Hamlet

    18. august 2025, Danmark ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

    Today we trained it to Helsingor to see Kronborg Castle.
    Built between 1574 and 1585 by King Frederick ll for his wife Sophie.
    William Shakespeare was inspired by the castle and used it for the setting of Hamlet. Actors perform scenes from Hamlet in spots around the castle, which was fun to watch.
    We had another gym workout climbing to the top of the Cannon Tower but well worth the view.
    Also went down to the casement under the castle. Its whete the armaments and food were stored. Luck for tthe torch on my mibile, it was so dark you could hardly see. Glad I didn't work there.
    After a stroll through the old town it was time for a beverage.    Les mer

    Goodbye Denmark

    Before we said farewell to Denmark, we spent a few hours at the National Museum seeing the most amazing Viking exhibition. It was the best exhibition we'd seen. Very interactive , lots of Norse myths plus so many artefacts.
    Less than 1hr on the train and we were in Lund Sweden where Hannah was waiting.    Les mer

    A walk in nature

    Off to get out in nature today .
    Bussed it to Dalby Söderskog national Park, Europe's smallest national Park. While we didn't see any wildlife, we could hear the woodpeckers. So different to home, full of oak trees, birch trees, wild blackberries and.red currants (I think).

    Final morning in Lund before training it ti Stockholm.
    A short walk to see Newton's Apple tree. This a dirctect descendant from the original tree he used for his theroy of gravity.
    Then past the beautiful University library, which has a copy of everything printed in Sweden since 1698.
    Unfortunately the smallest and oldest shop in Sweden was closed.    Les mer

    After a delicious lunch it was onto the Cathederal to see the Astronomical Clock and into the crypt.
    In the end we had to hot foot it to the station for our 5hr train trip to Stockholm.

    Hello Stockholm

    Welcome to rainy and cold Stockholm. That was last night. Today was much better, no rain.
    Once we managed to navigate the confusing metro warren we felt elated.
    Headed straight to old town which is full of beautiful buildings. Walked down, Märten Trotzigs Gränd, Sweden's narrowest street.
    The Jewish museum and Nobel museum were so interesting
    Of course no trip to Sweden is complete without eating Swedish meatballs. Delicious and not like Ikea's.

    The Royal Palace

    Today we braved the cold and icy wind to do a walking tour of old town. The Rune stone was carved in the 11th century . The cannon supposedly protects the house. Then onto lunch to warm up.
    The afternoon was spent at the Royal Palace which is huge and very regal. We arrived just in time for changing of the guards. Originally, it was built out of timber and stone in the 1200 but burnt down in 1697. It was rebuilt over 57 years.
    Needed to warm up again, so we had fika.
    It's the traditional practice of coffee and cake ...who am I to argue.    Les mer

    Vikings

    Today was another balmy 14° ,so much for summer.i
    Took a ferry ride to Djurgarden to the Viking museum. Absolutely brilliant. Very interactive and informative.
    Fun facts: 1. no horns on a viking helmet..ever
    2. Viking is the act of travelling but Norsemen are the people
    3. Normandy in France comes from the Norseman men that lived there.

    Sigtuna

    Today was our last day in Sweden.
    We decided to get out of Stockholm and take a train ride to Sigtuna.
    It's the oldest town in Sweden and former capital and was established by Eric the Victorious in AD970 . Sweden's first coins were minted there around 995.

    Goodbye Stockholm.
    Getting to the airport was a nightmare. After trying to get on 3 trains, they were so packed, it was time to get an uber. Peak hour traffic is like Sydney's..aahhh. We made it just in time to board.
    Note to self; Never leave for an airport during peak hour.
    Welcome to sunny Scotland 😂 Of course, as soon as we started walking the heavens opened up. We gave us after a while and headed back to our accommodation. Celebrate our arrival with a pint. 🍺    Les mer

    Edinburgh

    Today was a walking day and of course ir rained on us.
    First it was up to Calton Hill to look out over Edinburgh, see the Nelson and Burns monuments
    A quick look in Old Calton Cemetery,. Opened in 1718 , it is where notable Scots are buried.
    Fun fact : a lady buried her amputated leg there 32yrs before she died.
    Over Northbridge to the Royal Mile. Not quite what I expected, so many tourist shops.
    Stopped to go inside St Giles Cathederal, a UNESCO site, where they had an exhibition about the archaeological dig they've done. They've found graves inside the Cathederal dating back to about 1150.
    On the way home stopped at Mark and Spence foos hall to get something for dinner. Nobody must cook here, There're so many ready to heat up dinners.

    Today started with high hopes. Woke up to sunshine, but as we headed to the highlands and west on our Rabbies tour, the weather had other plans.
    There's only 10 of us, 1 English couple and 3 American couples.
    Ross our tour guide is so knowledgeable. We've learnt about Robert the Bruce, Stirling Castle, William Wallace, the Campbell Clan ( Gordon's rels) life in the highlands and lowlands and Edinburgh.
    Kilchurn Castle was the the original Campbell castle ( Gordon's related to these Campbell's ) before Inveray castle was built.
    St Conan's Kirk, built Walter Campbell for his grandmother because she didn't want to travel by horse and carriage to the next town, is also part of his heritage .
    Tonight we're in Oban, the stepping stone to Mull and Iona    Les mer

    Up early for a beautiful ferry crossing to the Isle of Mull. Sun was trying to shine, warm and the sea very calm. Even saw dolphins.
    Once on Mull we drove straight down the island to catch the ferry to Iona.
    Iona was settled in by St Columba in 563 and is said to be the birthplace of Celtic Christianity. Our trip to Iona was out short as the ferry master was concerned about the afternoon weather and the ferry could be cancelled . We did have time to see the ruins of the abbey and nunnery but not do any walks.    Les mer

    Due to coming back to Mull early. We had time to wander through a herd of highland coos before an impromptu visit to Durat Castle, home to the Maclean Clan. We arrived in time to watch a pipe band before the rain came.
    The weather closed in so much it was touch and go whether we'd get off Mull as our ferry was cancelled so we drove to the little ferry but the queue was hours long. Alternative accommodation was organised. In the meantime we drove back to the other ferry and luckily the weather abated after 90mins so they decided to run the ferry ans wr could get back to Oban. 😅    Les mer

    Glencoe

    Today the weather was kind, no rain.
    We headed north towards Skye.
    Stopped to see Castle Stalker then on to Glencoe. Glencoe is known for the MacDonald massacre in 1694 on the Kingston order.
    The area has stunning scenery
    At Fort William we just happened to be in time to see the Jacobite train also known as Hogwarts train.
    Tonight we have a beautiful view of Skye from our room.
    Fun fact parts of Harry Potter and Brave Heart were film around Glencoe.    Les mer
