  • Taman Ayun

    6 mars 2020, Indonesien ⋅ 🌧 29 °C

The royal temple of the Mengwi kingdom. About 85% of the people in Bali are Hindu. This is the Central temple for many festivals.
The 1st picture looks through the main gate to main temple that is only open to worshippers. The next 4 pictures are all of that main temple taken from outside the wall. They were preparing for a major festival next week. The last picture is of the statue of the harvest goddess.Läs mer

  • Sidemen

    10 mars 2020, Indonesien ⋅ ☁️ 26 °C

Located near the foot of Mount Agung, Bali's tallest mountain (and an active volcano), Sidemen is a small, traditional, rural village not much modernized by all the construction to serve the tourist invasion of Bali. At least not yet. So it gives a good look at old Bali.
The 1st picture is of the center of town. The 2nd looks across the rice paddies. Mount Agung is at the left with the summit in clouds. 3rd is planting rice. 4th is a traditional weaver working on a traditional wedding sarong. 4th is a guy playing a Balinese instrument much like a marimba. Last is a couple guys using a chainsaw as a sawmill, cutting up a recently fallen tree into lumber. Not seen that before

  • Mount Batur

    11 mars 2020, Indonesien ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

Pictures taken near the crater of Mount Batur as the sun came up. That is not Batur in the sunrise pictures. It is Mount Abong across the lake. The 3rd picture looks up to the crest of Mount Batur, while 4&5 look into the crater from different angles. Last is a look along the lake from another location. That is Mount Abong to the right. Batur is out of the picture to the leftLäs mer

  • Menjangan Island

    12 mars 2020, Indonesien ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

A day of snorkeling along coral reefs off the northwest coast of Bali. I don't have an underwater camera. So I can't provide pictures of the fish and coral. All I can say is that in my limited snorkeling trips, this is by far the most different species of fish I've seen, and the coral, while not in great shape, was better than I had seen before. Thankfully, the sun was out and all the bright colors stood out beautifully. On the other hand, I got some scalp sunburn. Gotta invest in a swim cap, I guess.
The pictures are of the island from the water; along the shore of the island; and a view of a meadow back from the shore.

  • Local market

    13 mars 2020, Indonesien ⋅ ⛅ 31 °C

Not too far from Lovina where we stayed. This market looks typical, but is on two levels. Envision a parking deck with stairs instead of car ramps, and you have a good image of the structure. While most of the pictures might be familiar, the last one shows traditional Hindu offering baskets made from sewn leaves and filled with flowers, etc. to be taken to temples or businesses or other places where prayers for good fortune might be made, either as intercessions or as thanksgivings.Läs mer

  • Munduk rainy season

    13 mars 2020, Indonesien ⋅ 🌧 24 °C

Munduk is a tiny mountain town where we stopped for lunch at a place with a nice view, but that got lost in clouds and rain. The 1st 2 pictures are of a waterfall. Note the color difference. After a major storm, the water is muddy. That settled down and cleared as the weather improved. However, while we had lunch, the clouds rolled up the valley. The other 2 pictures are of the same view down the valley, taken about an hour apart.Läs mer

  • Offering

    13 mars 2020, Indonesien ⋅ 🌧 26 °C

As I said in another post, people here reguarly place offerings at temples, shrines, outside of businesses, etc. This happens 3 times a day. Most people purchase the offerings,. We visited a woman who has a garden that provides the flowers for the offerings, and she makes them for her house temple and for sale. She showed us how and then we made our own.
The 1st picture is of the materials we used. 2nd is the box of coconut leaves, folded and pinned together with tiny bamboo sticks. The next 2 are me working on mine, followed by me with the finished product. The last picture is of the shrine where the offerings were placed

  • Ulun Danu

    14 mars 2020, Indonesien ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

Famous and important temple from the 17th century that is also somewhat of a Balinese icon. It is situated on a rock in the lake. Legend has it that a snake protects the site. This site also had a Buddhist monastery adjacent, not a common occurrence in Bali.
The 1st 2 pictures look at the main temple. 3&4 are of a post-cremation ritual. We just happened to be there at the right time. 5th is the original island with statues of the snake and other local fauna. The last picture is of a portion of the gardens on site.

  • Waikiki

    17 mars 2020, Förenta staterna ⋅ 🌧 22 °C

The famous beach along with the adjacent neighborhood. I stayed a block and a half from the beach.
The 1st pictures look along the beach on a cloudy, rainy day. The 3rd picture is similar to the 1st but with the sun out. 4th catches a surfer. (This is Hawaii, after all.). 5th is Diamond Head from Waikiki Beach. And last is a sunset over Waikiki.
I was surprised on my last day to find yellow police tape all along the beach. The state closed even Waikiki, and the police were enforcing the closure with arrests and pretty steep fines, I'm told. Somehow I didn't expect that.

  • Honolulu

    18 mars 2020, Förenta staterna ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

Hawaii is as beautiful as it's reputation. Unfortunately, I was only here for a few days and that at the beginning of the Coronavirus time. So everything was closed. Hence these are pictures from the street without being able to actually visit.
1st is Iolani Palace. 2nd is the Supreme Court building that may be familiar from Hawaii 5-0. 3rd is the Territorial Building from before 1959 when Hawaii became a state. 4th is the old mission church, and 5th is the old mission house, said to be the oldest house in Honolulu. Last is a look from part way up Diamond Head. The park itself was closed. So I couldn't go to the top.
