    Camino 1 Roncesvalles to Pamplona

    July 3, 2019 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

First day on the trail and we are green! We left a bit later then we would in future, unaware of the impact of the intense post noon heat, or the difficulty and amount of climbing involved on the track.
We are in great spirits, although Liz took a spectacular skid and crash while crossing a slipperly ford. I ran back to help her, only to take a similar skid and slide sideways through the shallow water and alongside her! Great entertainment for the peligrinos walking nearby!
Today's track involved technical and rooty uphill, followed by a long but largely unrideable descent. Scoffed a big lunch in Zuburi before continuing for the last 20km or so. 20km can be really long when it's this hot and the track is unsheltered and climby! Lots of beautiful sections too but I wasn't drinking enough water and the heat caught up with me. Pamplona was a city we'd been looking forward to exploring but we were simply exhausted with a long 42km!
