Who would've thought? Turns out that some French nobility fleeing the French Revolution and slave uprisings in Saint-Domingue (Haiti) settled here in a small town called French Azilium (Asylum) with help from several influential Philadelphians, including Stephen Girard, Robert Morris and John Nicholson. According to legend, Marie Antoinette and her two surviving children were to settle here had they been able to escape.

Knapp’s Covered Bridge

The Knapp’s Covered Bridge in Bradford County near Towanda, PA is stunning. Said to be the tallest covered bridge in the state, it dates back to 1860. This is a pretty remarkable bridge, and the only covered bridge left in Bradford County.
It measures in at 95 feet long and is on the National Register of Historic Places.Meer informatie

The Historic Penn Wells Hotel

Our home for the next couple of days - The Historic Penn Wells Hotel in Wellsboro PA.
The Penn Wells Hotel, built in 1869, is one of Wellsboro’s most historic landmarks. The current building, which was restored in the 1920s.
it has 70 character-filled guest rooms of varying sizes and types...and our was probably the smallest :)
The heat is old-style hot water radiators and we were forewarned not to go past 1 on the dial, least "we'd be steamed". Sure enough just with the setting on 1 - in about 1.5 hours it did feel like a steambath:)Meer informatie

Wellsboro City Park

Wellsboro was incorporated in 1830 and was named in honor of Mary Wells, wife of one of the original settlers, Benjamin Wistar Morris. Wellsboro Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Wellsboro City Park is home to Wynken, Blynken, & Nod Statue (fountain). It is not only beautiful and nostalgic, artistically refined but also warm and tender in its connotation. Apparently "Wynken, Blinken and Nod" is a Dutch Lullaby created by Eugene Field in 1889. Its words are written down on the 1976 tablet founded by Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hospital Family and placed in front of the fountain.
The monument in the middle of the fountain was created by Mabel Landrum Torrey around the year of 1920 and it was exhibited in Chicago Art Institute where she studied. Besides Wellsboro similar statue was created for Washington Park in Denver city. The dedication of the fountain in Wellsboro took place in 1938Meer informatie

Wellsboro Cemetery

Saturday morning started with the rain so we had to bide our time before commencing on planned hike. As befitting, when we are in 'historical towns' we checked out Wellsboro Cemetery.
The first cemetery of Wellsboro was originally located on Pearl Street. The Wellsboro Cemetery was incorporated in the year 1849, authorizing purchase of property in another part of town. Actual move to the new property didn’t happen until 1855. The first burial was a James Bryden who died March 16, 1856. The founders of Wellsboro, Benjamin Morris and his wife, Mary Wells, who originally were buried on the Pearl Street lots, were later moved to the present Wellsboro Cemetery.

Darling Run

The rain is finally stopped and we are off to hike the Pine Creek Rail The 62-mile well--maintained trail runs at the bottom of überscenic Pine Creek Gorge, commonly called the Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania. This day we did about 7 miles R\T from Darling Run access point (roughly mile marker 8).

The first line that operated in the corridor was the Jersey Shore, Pine Creek and Buffalo Railway in 1883. Over the years, other rail lines operated here, with Conrail being the last; trains stopped running down the tracks in 1988.

The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) S-155 Darling Run Camp was directly on Pine Creek and accessible by the New York Central Railroad– now the Pine Creek Rail Trail. The boys of this camp developed the two Pennsylvania Grand Canyon State Parks – Leonard Harrison and Colton Point.
To honor and commemorate the hard work and accomplishments of the CCC, established on March 31, 1933, by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, a CCC Worker Statue was created to be placed across the nation, primarily in sites where they worked. I included a photo of CCC Worker statue here although it is located in the Leonard Harrison State Park by the Visitors Area.

Pine Creek Gorge, sometimes called The Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania, is a 47-mile (76 km) gorge carved into the Allegheny Plateau by Pine Creek in north-central Pennsylvania. At Leonard Harrison and Colton Point State Parks, it is more than 800 feet (240 m) deep and the distance rim-to-rim is about 4,000 feet (1,200 m).
The Trail follows the Creek and we enjoyed a very nice hike.Meer informatie

The Turkey Path

The Turkey Path is a popular mile-long hiking trail in the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon that combines stunning views with several outstanding waterfalls.
The trail descends 750 feet from the vistas up top in the Leonard Harrison State Park to the banks of Pine Creek at the bottom.
Since we were already "at the bottom" and considering that the trail was officially closed (it closes Wednesday before TG) we hiked up only about 1/4 mile to the 1st waterfall.
This also marked our turnaround point back to Darlings Run Access AreaMeer informatie

Leonard Harrison State Park

Leonard Harrison State Park is a 585-acre Pennsylvania state park. It is on the east rim of the Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania, The Park is known for its views of the Pine Creek Gorge, and offers hiking, fishing and hunting, whitewater boating, and camping.
The creation of the park was the work of Leonard Harrison, a former lumberman and businessman from Wellsboro who owned a substantial amount of land in the Pine Creek Gorge. He purchased 121 acres of land at the site of the current park in 1906, then developed this land, known as "The Lookout", and invited the public to enjoy the beauty of Pine Creek Gorge. Harrison donated the picnic grounds to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 1922.
After our Pine Creek Trail hike and a fast lunch we drove up to the park so we can take a look at The Gorge from the above.

Cherry Springs State Park

Cherry Springs State Park is an 82-acre state park about 45 mins SW from Wellsboro and is named for a large stand of Black Cherry trees in it. It is popular with astronomers and stargazers for having "some of the darkest night skies on the east coast" of the United States, and was chosen by the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) and its Bureau of Parks as one of "25 Must-See Pennsylvania State Parks". It worth nothing that development of the facilities at Cherry Springs was also the work of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC).

They say that it also — surprisingly — offers the chance to witness the Aurora Borealis in all its glory. Peak nights for seeing the Northern Lights occur from around the Autumnal Equinox to the end of September.

Of course with our luck we came in on a completely 100% clear cloudless night.... but also during full moon! The light of the moon was bright enough that it was just "too light" and made it practically impossible to see the myriad of stars we hoped to see :(
None-the-less we were able to spot Mars, Jupiter and Uranus with our naked eyes. I am enclosing the pictures, although, my camera, being a "point-n-shoot" non- professional Fuji with only 100x zoom, I could not get them get into a clear focus.

We are enjoying a reasonably nice breakfast in the Mary Wells dining room of our hotel.
Although (given "the times" obviously) everything is pretty much individually portioned out (no chance of a hot buffet that would've been served otherwise) it had variety of pastries, muffins, cereals, yogurts, juices and of course teas and coffee.
The hotel was also very nice to provide a small lunch bag which had a muffin and an apple. We surely took advantage every day we were there and it was a good mid-day snack of a sort after our hikesMeer informatie

Colton Point State Park

Colton Point State Park is a 368-acre park and is on the west side of the Pine Creek Gorge. It is named for Henry Colton, a Williamsport lumberman who cut timber there starting in 1879 and was also a part of the conservation efforts of the CCC in the 1930s.
We hit the Park reasonably early this morning and decided to hike The Rim Trail, which follows the western edge of the Pine Creek Gorge through the park, linking overlooks and picnic shelters.
Unfortunately it proved to be a bit narrow for Laurie who did not feel comfy enough being "that close to the edge", so we shifted gears and decided to get back onto the Pine Creek Rail Trail, just do a different section.Meer informatie

On this stretch we saw lots of wildlife prints. Deer, bear, foxes and bobcat! Laurie played her "usual" Pathfinder :)
We also saw a reafter of wild turkeys in the marshy area proper and met a somewhat elusive (or at least trying to be) orange tabby cat.Meer informatie

Dinner at Wellsboro House Brewery

The day (and for all purposes, pretty much the weekend, as we hit the road back home the following morning) was aptly finished off by a scrumptious dinner at Wellsboro House Brewery.
A yummy Port Richmond Creamy Crab dip (the owner as it turned out is from Port Richmond neighborhood in Philly!) appetizer to share, followed by Wellsboro house burger (moi) and White Fish PoBoy (Laurie) - all washed down by a couple of pints of brewery finest ales.Meer informatie
