  • Atlanta

    18 september 2023, Verenigde Staten ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

Our stay in Atlanta so far started with checking into the beautiful Candler Hotel. We then checked out the city and had dinner at the very popular Poor Calvin‘s serving interesting Southern soul food/Asian fusion food. The next day we had lunch at the equally popular and famous Mary Mac’s Teehouse, the last remaining teahouse in Atlanta for traditional soul food. After that we walked the belt line (a disused railway) track to the fabulous Botanical Gardens. For dinner we caught up with our fabulous friend Rupa at Delbar in the trendy Inman Park.Meer informatie

  • Atlanta - Part 2

    18 september 2023, Verenigde Staten ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

We started our last full day in Atlanta at the long standing Breakfast at Barney’s for their world famous pancakes then headed over to the historic Oakland Cemetery, the resting place to many pivotal and celebrated figures including Atlanta’s first black Mayor and the author of Gone with the Wind. We then took in many of the sites dedicated to the life and work of Martin Luther King Jnr (MLK) including the museum, the house where he was born and raised, the Ebenezer Baptist Church where he was a co-pastor, his tombstone and the eternal flame in his memory. All very moving. After that we went out to Decatur. While only 15 minutes from Atlanta, it feels like a country town with magnificent period style homes. We then headed back into the city to the Centennial Olympic Park, the home of the 1996 Summer Olympics.Meer informatie

  • Road trip - Atlanta to Savannah

    19 september 2023, Verenigde Staten ⋅ ☁️ 28 °C

Today, we made the trip from Atlanta across Georgia to the coastal town of Savannah. We stopped at the historic town of Madison (where many films and tv shows are shot) for some lunch and southern hospitality. We then drove through many rural counties and roads to Savannah. Through the landscape and accents you can definitely feel the spirit of the south. The temptation to break into my best Blanche Devereaux southern accent is irresistible.Meer informatie

  • The Olde Pink House

    19 september 2023, Verenigde Staten ⋅ 🌙 25 °C

On our first night in Savannah we went for dinner in the stunningly historic Olde Pink House Restaurant. Originally built in 1771, this historic structure was once one of the oldest homes in all of Savannah. It has also been a bank, Confederate Army headquarters, tea room, and antique shop before eventually being converted into this award winning restaurant. In fact, we were seated in the army quarters where the Declaration of Independence was discussed! Chills! Every nook and cranny of this place is divine and the food was delicious. Such a fantastic place it needed its own exclusive post!Meer informatie

  • Savannah Bike Tour and Mrs Wilkes

    21 september 2023, Verenigde Staten ⋅ ☁️ 27 °C

On our last day in Savannah we did a fantastic bike tour and it’s no less magnificent in the daylight. We rode through 16 of the 22 town squares and learnt fascinating history including:

    1. Jones street is where the saying “keeping up with the Joneses” comes from. It’s considered America’s most beautiful street.
    2. We visited the church where Jingle Bells was written
    3. Savannah has the second biggest St Patrick’s Day in the world next to New York City. This is because Savannah was the only port that would take Irish immigrants as paid employees as Savannah was an abolitionist/antislavery town, so the Irish could get work as indentured servants, which was basically lowly paid slaves.
    4. Forrest Gump was filmed here, using the town hall and one of the town squares. But the bench where he sat was stolen. LOL
    5. The first Africans brought to Savannah believed that evil spirits couldn’t cross water so the downpipes often had fish features to represent water.
    6. A group of women called the ‘Old ladies of Savannah’ chained themselves to an old building in Savannah to save it from being torn down. They succeeded and using their combined funds purchased it and created the historical society. Thanks to them Savannah has an unusually large amount of historic buildings, so they literally saved Savannah!
    7. Savannah has 22 Town Squares more than any other place in the world.
    8. The hauntingly beautiful moss you see all over the trees is known as Spanish moss, and it flies in via seeds from the Caribbean!

After all that, we had lunch at Mrs Wilke’s dining room, where you sit with other people family style with fried chicken, brisket etc and no less than 16 side dishes. All your southern classics were there, like black eyed beans and fried Okra, and it was absolutely fantastic!

Finally we went to the hauntingly beautiful Bonaventure Cemetery considered the most beautiful in the USA.

  • Miami Beach

    22 september 2023, Verenigde Staten ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

Today we explored South Beach and Miami Beach near where we are staying. As you might imagine, it’s incredibly beautiful with crystal clear waters, stunning Palm Trees everywhere, and not to mention the incredible art deco buildings along Ocean Drive. Anyone who knows me, knows my love of pastel colours , so I was in heaven! I even had a swim. First time in international waters - warmer than I have ever experienced! Oh, and we even saw iguanas in the street!Meer informatie

  • Miami Downtown and Little Havana

    22 september 2023, Verenigde Staten ⋅ ☁️ 29 °C

Miami has a very large Cuban population starting from the 1950s. The Cuban presence is everywhere - in the food, the music, the language and the people so we decided to check out Little Havana for lunch. Little Havana is full of character (including Roosters in the street - real and statues) and we really enjoyed the traditional Cuban Fritas (burgers) at El Ray De Las Fritas. Not chicken lol. We then checked out the trendy Brickell including its shopping centre that is partially open air then crossed the bridge to Downtown Miami. We were able to get some great shots of the city and of Biscayne Bay, which we will be sailing on tomorrow.Meer informatie

  • Biscayne Bay Celebrity Mansion Cruise

    23 september 2023, Verenigde Staten ⋅ ☁️ 28 °C

The next portion of our tour was a boat cruise around Biscayne Bay. Was great to take in the sites including the celebrity mansions (see captions). Includes Fisher Island, the most expensive ZIP Code in all of America. Celebrities such as Oprah Winfrey and Justin Bieber have apartments here. Fisher Island has its own schools, banks and everything so they never have to leave and there are no bridges to the island - very exclusive.Meer informatie

  • Florida Everglades

    23 september 2023, Verenigde Staten ⋅ ☁️ 31 °C

Next on our tour, we went out to the famous Everglades wetlands and did an Airboat ride. It was absolutely exhilarating to be out on the water and as close to adrenaline sports as we get. We even saw an American Alligator in the wild and another 64-year-old 10 foot one named Cannibal in captivity. They tried providing girlfriends for him and he ate all seven of them, hence his name. Storms have been a brewing in Florida since last night which just added to the drama of this awe inspiring place.Meer informatie

  • Mexico City - Day 2

    26 september 2023, Mexico ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

Day two in Mexico City started with a fantastic walking and Metro tour of ‘Real Mexico’. We got to see how the locals live out in the Barrios and try traditional Mexican food and also visited some sites and learnt some history. In the afternoon we went to the Templo Mayor Museum exhibiting the archaeological findings of the zone that used to be the Main Temple of the Mexica/Aztec peoples. It was discovered in 1978 by electrical workers digging in the area. We also went to a government building with extensive murals by Diego Rivera. His murals were an important political/activist statement to teach the Mexican people about their history as over 70% were illiterate post the revolution. We also went to the tallest building in Mexico City (Torre Latino Americana) to get some great shots of the city.Meer informatie

  • Frida Kahlo Museum

    27 september 2023, Mexico ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Today we visited the Frida Kahlo Museum - the house she lived with her artist husband Diego Rivera (two houses separated by a bridge). It was fascinating to learn about her life including her health struggles - polio as a child, bus accident at 17 and subsequent suffering including miscarriage and leg amputation the year before her death at 47. Despite all this she managed to produce a body of work that continues to intrigue the world over to this day.Meer informatie

  • Xochimilco Gondola Ride

    27 september 2023, Mexico ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

After the Frida Kahlo museum, we ventured out to Xochimilco to take a gondola (trajinera) ride on the canals. They are often referred to as ‘floating gardens’ as you can buy flowers and other items along the canals such as a song from an xylophone player or mariachi band or a toffee apple. The canal system was an important part of the Aztec precolonial life and was made a World Heritage site in recognition in 1987.Meer informatie

Chapultepec Castle, along with Iturbide Palace, also in Mexico City, are the only royal palaces in North America which were inhabited by monarchs.Meer informatie

Today it is a Unesco protected site and it was great to see everything on the ground but also ruins/relics underground. We even had lunch in a cave.Meer informatie
