  • To Cradle Mountain

    2022年3月21日, オーストラリア ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

After a bit of a late start due to tyre puncture issues we made our way to cradle with a short detour to pick up chocolate covered raspberries at Christmas Hills Raspberry Farm. We also stopped at Van Diemans Ice Cremery which was under renovation last year and Kirk got a very interesting leatherwood honey and pepperberry icecream. After that was the fairly long drive out of Launcestone to Cradle mountain. Our accommodation this time was at Cradle Mountain Wilderness Village as where we normally stay at the discovery parks was booked out. There was so much room with two bedrooms split by quite an ample living/kitchen/dining area and your own private balcony with a table and chair set. There isn't an oven and they probably don't provide as many things to cook with as at Discovery parks but it was still very good and we were able to cook for our entire trip. We only had one cabin on either side but we did hear the road noise as we were facing the main road in and out of Cradle but this dwindled down to no noise in the evening. Once we reached Cradle and unpacked we drove up to the interpretation centre and did some of the short walks around there including the enchanted walk and the forest walk. We even saw an Echidna!もっと詳しく

    2022年3月22日, オーストラリア ⋅ 🌧 12 °C

Not a great day to be walking today given the light showers but it wasn't particularly prohibitive. We thought that we would do Marion's Lookout today and come back via Horse Track. While it was cloudy and drizzly it was still very beautiful and almost a little mystical especially at Marion's Lookout where you could watch the clouds pass by very quickly. After Marion's lookout we walked up the Cradle Plateau where there was so little cover that we got quite wet with the showers coming in sideways. The plateau is much prettier on a clear day as the clouds covered Barn bluff and occasionally the mountains themselves. Descending down the horse track and back to Ronny Creek to our car the best feeling was having a hot shower and a rest at our accomodation.もっと詳しく

Today being a wet and windy day we thought we would just do Dove Lake Circuit. We started out late as it was lovely to sleep in since it was so cold and we therefore had to catch the shuttle bus up to Dove Lake. The bus was of course packed with like minded travellers.
We of course decided to do the circuit anti clockwise which is contrary to the advice given by the rangers to do this clockwise. Why we do this is the amount of climbing you have to do clockwise versus anti clockwise.

On our way around Dove Lake we came across the turn off to head up to Lake Wilks. With Kirk's encouragment we decided to head on up since neither one of us had done this track before. The track wasn't too bad but if it was any wetter it would be quite slippery. As we were climbing, we could catch glimpses of this exposed cliff with walking chains. On reaching lake Wilks there was a spectacular view over Dove Lake. From there we thought, why don't we go as high as we can to join up to the face track. I had my reservations to be honest but figured what did we have to lose? At any point we could still turn around and the weather while windy and cloudy it was only very light misty showers it wasn't enough for us to stop. So, we persisted, even stopping on the track and having our wraps and some hot tea for lunch. Before long we reached the face track and were able to walk along the mostly flat track while looking out the absolutely stunning views over Dove lake to our left with Cradle mountain to our right. It was breathtaking to be so close to what we had only seen from afar previously.もっと詳しく

The face track eventually led us to a hiker's shelter which was a lovely blue hut surrounded by what looked almost like a fairy garden. It was also sheltered from the wind and we took a moment to enjoy the brief sunlight here before continuing our trail. While it was initially quite gentle the track soon became quite steep with more chains punched straight into stone to hold on to the only purchase you could use. There were also areas where you were quite exposed which meant often needing to crouch down so that the wind wouldn't blow us off the hills! At this point I think we were on the Lake Rodway track which you can access from Dove Lake. I definitely would not want to climb up the Lake Rodway track given how steep it is. We eventually made it down to Dove Lake with a measure of relief - I couldn't help but wonder whether we would make it to the shuttle on time. It was a lovley day, we made it to the shuttle on time and we completed a walking track on Cradle Mountain we had never done before. It was incredibly satisfying!もっと詳しく

Last full day in Cradle. We were so tired and achy that we just did something simple - walk from Ronny Creek up to Waldheim and heindorfers forest. We had a lovely morning tea at the day hut with views out to Cradle before deciding to cut it short when it started raining. It was nice to end the day with a trip to the shop near peppers and the information centre again though with more purchases of course :)もっと詳しく

  • Sister's Beach 25/3/22

    2022年3月25日, オーストラリア ⋅ ⛅ 10 °C

Leaving cradle Mountain :( onto our next stop - driving north to sister's Beach to explore the Northwest. Had a brief stop at Bridge waterfalls and at the bridge waterfall farm where we had some great paddock to plate food. From there we drove to Burnie and checked out a lookout before doing a bit of shopping. Saw some lovely flowers (Dahlias) for sale on the way to our next accommodation and couldn't help myself. The accommodation is lovely and very retro. Right near the beach and hardly anyone there. Dinner was some pizzas from the local convenience store (fairly average) overlooking the ocean and watching the sun set.もっと詳しく

Our first day started with a portion of the Tarkine Trail. We decided to do it in two stages with today focusing on the eastern portion or the forest part of the trail. This started with Trowutta Arch. Milkshake hills was a bit boring but the rest was interesting. We stopped at rocky Cape national Park on the way back to the accommodation and first saw the lighthouse and then the Northwest cave. It was a long day of driving but some interesting sights.もっと詳しく

Today was exploring the western portion of the Tarkine Trail which was all coastal. Absolutely stunning coastal vistas and bright blue water. On the way back we stopped off in Stanley and saw the nut and had a delicious Persian live cake and lemon cheesecake. We also stopped off and tried a scallop pie and a crayfish pie (which was not cheap) to bring back to the accommodation (they were both delicious). Buildings in stanley were so cute and full of character.もっと詳しく

We left Sisters Beach today and made our way across to Campbell Town on our way to Hobart. On the way we stopped off at the Arboretum run by volunteers which was lovely to walk around in. Our accommodation for the night was Solomon's Cottage in campbell town. It was a lovely stay with an even lovelier garden out the back with lots of fresh produce. The host was more than happy to show us around and allowed us to try lots of produce.もっと詳しく

Leaving Campbell Town we made our way to the east coast to make our way towards Hobart. We did this specifically to visit Kate's Berry farm where we had their humble Berry pie and bought some chocolate coated berries and nuts. Our accommodation in Hobart was a refurbished barn behind the house which I have wanted to stay at previously. Such a beautiful space. Our dinner that night - Don Camillo. Delicious as usual.もっと詳しく

Today was the when Kirk needed to attend a funeral. I dropped him at the airport and stopped off at Richmond for some brekky before heading back to the accommodation. I ordered some lovely Berry waffles and a coffee at czegs and just sat and contemplated and read the news a day played with my phone. Before I knew it, the shops were starting to open so I walked by for some retail therapy. On the way back from Richmond I stopped at the botanical Gardens and had a short walk through there. I was tired at this point so went back and had a nap before I needed to walk down to black footed pig for dinner with Penny. It was a bit of a disappointing dinner to be honest but was great to catch up!もっと詳しく

We had a lazy day today. Decided to head south towards Huonville and visited Willie Smith's Apple shed to try their toasted sanger. We had that and their apple pie. The sanger was absolutely amazing but their apple pie still wasn't as good as what we had in Stanthorpe. After that we went back to the accomodation and walked down to Battery Point in the afternoon to kill some time before having yet another dinner at Don Camillo. It was a lovely easy going day especially walking via Kelly's steps past all the lovely old houses back to Sandy bay and another delicious dinner of gnocchi with lamb ragu, steak that was cooked beautifully and the best pannacotta I've ever had.もっと詳しく

    2022年4月1日, オーストラリア ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

On our last full day we decided to go and explore the sights on the way to Port Arthur. There are lots of little walks that you can turn off and do on the way down and we did a lot of them. We went and saw Tesselated beach, Tasman Arch and Devil's kitchen. One of the best decisions we made was to do the one hour walk to Waterfall Bay which had some lovely views along the cliff. It was definitely 30 minutes there and back and hardly anyone on the track at all. Definitely a must do when seeing the Tasman Arch. Port Arthur itself cost $45 entry and I wasn't fussed to be honest as Kirk had already been. I was more interested in the natural scenery and I was very happy with what we had seen. Remarkable cave was after Port Arthur before we turned around and started our trip back to Hobart.もっと詳しく

    2022年4月1日, オーストラリア ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

On our way back we stopped at Port Arthur Lavendar Farm and had their Cheesecake. It looked magnificent but was a tad disappointing. I'm not a fan of lavender in food so it all tasted a bit like I was eating soap. It was in lovely grounds though and we enjoyed browsing through their gift shop! Of course for our last night we had to finish up at our favourite restaurant where we were given the best table and Kirk even got a free glass of wine. This time we had the prawn brushcetta, the sausage special (which Kirk had remembered from the first time we found the restaurant) and the vegetarian pasta finished off with the sticky fig pudding with butterscotch sauce (not pictured) - all absolutely delicious as per usual.もっと詳しく
