  • St Charles Street Car

    15. mars 2016, Forente stater ⋅ ⛅ 75 °F

Started our day with breakfast and jazz at Cafe Beignet then boarded the St Charles Street Car and headed to the Garden District for a walking tour.
    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Charles_Str…
We started at Lafayette Cemetery No. 1. Kind of creepy but reading the tombstones was fascinating. http://www.saveourcemeteries.org/lafayette-ceme… We then hit the neighborhood, suffice to say we saw many beautiful historic homes including Anne Rice's mansion.

We rode the streetcar uptown to the end of the line passing Loyola University and Audubon Park, then back to Canal Street. Walked through the French Quarter to return to our car...something new on every corner.

  • Slidell, United States

    16. mars 2016, Forente stater ⋅ ⛅ 77 °F

We took a tour of the Honey Island Swamp. The water was very high from record floods, so not a lot of wildlife, but we were well educated about the Louisiana swamps and bayous by our tour guide, John.
We dined at Keith's Seafood and had some delicious gumbo, a shrimp/oyster po-boy, chicken wings, fried rice and freshly boiled crayfish... our best Cajun meal so far. We bought some Louisiana strawberries at Camellia Produce then took Hwy 90 back to the city. A beautiful drive through the bayous.

  • Evergreen Plantation

    17. mars 2016, Forente stater ⋅ ☁️ 73 °F

We toured Evergreen Plantation today, located on the banks of the Mississippi. Our guide Desiree was fantastic! She really made the location come to life with her animated delivery and phenomenal knowledge of the property and region's history.
The Big House, slave cabins and grounds were used as a location in the movie Django Unchained and are being used for a remake of Roots.

Went to the visitors center at the Whitney Plantation and walked the grounds but didn't take the tour. http://www.whitneyplantation.com/
We passed by blooming wild flowers and the Super dome on our way home.

Spent a good part of the day biking along the seawall. We really enjoyed looking at the white sand beaches, seabirds, harbors and beautiful homes.
We also chatted with some local fishermen and homeowners about life on the Gulf and surviving and rebuilding after Katrina. There are a lot of large oceanfront lots for sale where homes once stood as well as much new construction.
    A near perfect day😊

  • Vicksburg National Military Park

    29. mars 2016, Forente stater ⋅ ☀️ 70 °F

Spent an enlightening day touring the Vicksburg National Military Park. It was sobering thinking of the  29,491 lives lost during the 47 day battle, which was a turning point during the Civil War. There were monuments throughout the park, as well as the town, honoring the soldiers who fought in the battle. The tour included the USS Cairo Gunboat and Museum and the Vicksburg National Cemetery. This is a must see destination for anyone traveling in this area.
