  • Into the Wild

    10. joulukuuta 2024, Botswana ⋅ ☀️ 35 °C

Today we entered into the pristine wilderness area of the Okavango Delta. The polers selected the location of our camp and set it all up for us while we ate lunch. We were completely isolated and amongst whatever animals roamed the area. It was easily 100 degrees so we hung out under a tree in the shade until late afternoon and then the polers led a 2.5 hour wilderness walk. They had no weapons to protect us, just a homegrown sense of the behaviours of the animals of the area. We returned to camp just as the sun was setting. Trust prepared our dinner and we ate by the campfire, ever watchful for what might roam our way. Two hippos were spotted just before the entertainment began as the polers danced and serenaded us . They even taught us a few moves and we joined them in a few verses of their rendition of Beautiful Africa. As we turned into our tents for the night we we warned to stay in our tents and if we had to get up, to shine our torch to scan for eyes shining back at us and to listen for movement. I think I will try to hold it until morning!Lue lisää

  • A Sunrise Wilderness Walk

    10. joulukuuta 2024, South Atlantic Ocean ⋅ 🌙 27 °C

Double K, our lead poler, took us on another wilderness walk at daybreak this morning. The animals were up and moving about before the heat set in and we were able to get close to them. We had another magical ride in a Mokoros back to the trailhead. We thoroughly enjoyed our time in the Delta and are relieved to have survived the evening in the tent unscathed. Despite the curious noises of the night, we slept reasonably well. We had to make a slight detour on our way back in the Mokoros due to the number of hippos in our pathway. We just kept repeating our mantra- It’s all part of the experience!Lue lisää

  • Elephant Sands

    11. joulukuuta 2024, Botswana ⋅ 🌙 22 °C

We were up close and personal with the elephants today at the Elephant Sands Camp. They were jockeying for position at the waterhole, pushing and shoving and sounding off to express their displeasure. There was a warthog and her baby trying to get near for a drink too but they didn’t stand a chance. The restaurant and swimming pool were meters away from the watering hole and the elephants provided the afternoon entertainment. We were not permitted to return to our rooms after sunset without taking the shuttle as many of the elephants roamed freely between the tents and cabins. Going to and fro in the daylight was nerve racking enough. The other special treat was watching the yellow weaver birds flit in and out of their nests in the nearby trees. Our rooms were large permanent tents with a shower, mosquito nets over the beds, a fan and a large veranda and couch for viewing the elephants. It was wonderful to sleep outside and try to play the guessing game as to what was passing by the tent.Lue lisää

  • Chobe National Park Sunrise Game Drive

    13. joulukuuta 2024, Botswana ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

We awoke early to head out on a sunrise game drive in the Chobe National Park. When asked by the guide what we wanted to see, we said a lion and a leopard. We sighted our first male lion 500 meters in and were in awe as we watched him breakfast on a buffalo he had taken down a few days earlier. Our guide showed us a variety of animal tracks and skull and bone remains as well as a variety of other extraordinary wildlife and birds. His knowledge was extensive and his enthusiasm was infectious. What a fabulous start to a day. Sadly, no leopards were sighted but we were thrilled with what we did see and learn.Lue lisää

  • Lusumpuko Women’s Club Lunch

    13. joulukuuta 2024, Sambia ⋅ ⛅ 38 °C

We started our visit to Victoria Falls off on the right foot by sitting down to a traditional Zimbabwean meal, cooked by the Lusumpuko Women’s Club who are supported by G Adventures as a Planeterra project. This farm to table meal made with traditional, local, in-season ingredients, not only provides much- needed income to the cooperatives’ 20 members, changing their lives, but also giving them an opportunity to change the lives of other families in the process as the cooperative cooks and donates meals for a local orphanage.Lue lisää

  • Dinner Cruise on the Zambezi River

    13. joulukuuta 2024, Sambia ⋅ ⛅ 38 °C

The atmosphere was relaxed as we slowly and gently cruised down the Zambezi River, enjoying dinner and an open bar, and of course the wildlife on the river. A large crocodile was sunbathing on the shore while others swam about in the water and the hippos gave us the stink eye from where they swam and frolicked. The setting sun was our cue to head back to town for our farewell dinner. We were treated to views of both the Zimbabwe and Zambia shoreline and islands. It was our 4th activity of the day and a very pleasant way to unwind. Off to bed we go so we can explore the falls by foot in the morning.Lue lisää

  • Victoria Falls Ground View Points

    14. joulukuuta 2024, Zimbabwe ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

We were at the park gates at 6am today to beat the heat and explore the 16 viewpoints of the majestic Victoria Falls, one of the largest and most famous waterfalls in the world. This cascading pillar of water powering its way down a 100-meter chasm took our breath away as we gazed in awe at its incredible strength and beauty. The experience took us through parts of the Victoria Falls Rainforest. As we wandered through the pathway we could feel the cool spray from the falls on our faces and see rainbows forming. We also heard many species of birds singing. The majority of the viewpoints were located in Zimbabwe, while others could be viewed from the Zambian side. David Livingstone, a Scottish explorer and missionary is credited with being the first European to discover the falls in 1855.Lue lisää

  • A Walk Over the Bridge to Zambia

    14. joulukuuta 2024, Sambia ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

The bridge over the Zambezi River at the falls is a hub of activity. Many people cross from Zambia to try and sell their crafts and it is the site of various activities such as bungee jumping, white water rafting, jet boat rides, kayaking, and zip lining. The Knife Edge suspension bridge and Devil’s Pool a short swim from Livingstone Island are two really popular attractions along the viewpoints on the Zambian side. The Devil’s Pool is an affinity pool like no other, giving daring swimmers a chance to peer over the largest curtain of falling water in the world. Unfortunately, this thrill seeker could not squeeze that in this trip but took delight in watching others do it.Lue lisää

  • The Journey Home

    14. joulukuuta 2024, Etelä-Afrikka ⋅ 🌙 22 °C

Our journey home was a five step process involving, trains, planes and automobiles and we were only successful in completing four steps before a pause. We left Victoria Falls at 2pm on Dec 14th and flew to Johannesburg and then on to Cape Town before catching our long flight to Amsterdam and then onwards to Toronto, landing at 4pm on December 15th. We did not receive any luggage until 5:35 pm which caused us to miss our train to Cornwall so we overnighted at the Marriott and caught the early morning train home on the 16th. It was an incredible trip which will long be remembered for the wonderful experiences we had throughout.Lue lisää
