  • Milwaukee

    5.–6. nov. 2024, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

After leaving Chicago we spent the night right before Milwaukee, and in the morning we checked out the city. It was kind of boring, not much going on, and it was also raining. Our highlight was the city hall, which was built in the same style as the Hamburg city hall. After that we went to the Miller Brewery for a tour, which was very cool. We had a crazy guide, had some beer tasting and made some friends from California, who told us to try a Bloody Mary, because it is quite crazy in this area. One of them invited us to his house in San Diego and to go to a pub with them, but we had to drive to Madison to pick our licence plate finally.Læs mere

  • Madison

    6.–7. nov. 2024, Forenede Stater ⋅ 🌙 8 °C

After picking up our license plate we headed to the center where we had a beer and walked around. Unfortunately we weren't able to meet and spend the night at my friend's place, so we spent another night in the car, and looked for a community center to have a shower. We did a tour of the State Capitol of Wisconsin, which was very cool, and we had beautiful views on the lakes around from the top. We went to the veteran's museum and walked around the pedestrian area, with a lot of cute shops. We both agreed, that Madison is the place to do another semester abroad.Læs mere

  • St Paul

    8.–9. nov. 2024, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

We had an amazing petrol station to spend the night at, with a lounge, TV, sofas and tables, but it was super cold at night, so we went to Walmart to buy another blanket. We checked out the Capitol of Minnesota, also a very nice building, and then walked to the cathedral, which was huge. St Paul is the is right next to Minneapolis, they are also called as the twin cities. We also walked to a waterfall which is in the middle of the city. In the afternoon we went to the biggest mall in the US. It was a crazy experience, hundreds of shops, a complete theme park in the middle, massage salons and everything you wish for. After our sleeping spot at some monks' retreat didn't work out, we went to a gas station, which was right next to a pub. As we sat down, a guy immediately started talking to us and we kept on the whole night. Others joined us as well, invited us for some beers and recommended us many things to check out. They also warned us about Minneapolis being very dangerous - it's also called Murderapolis they said - and we of course discussed politics as well. It was a very American pub and the people we talked to had some questionable political views but it was super fun. Mike invited us to join them for breakfast, and try the crazy bloody Mary. He even offered us to take a shower at his place in the morning. Which we actually did, and had a very fun morning with them. The breakfast place was more like a pub, everyone was drinking, they had huge portions and pull-tabs, a kind of lottery and other gambling stuff. We played two rounds of pull-tabs, Olli even won a few dollars. They even offered us to stay another night, and to sleep at their place, but we had to leave unfortunately.Læs mere

  • Stillwater

    9. november 2024, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

Stillwater was Mike's recommendation, it was a beautiful little town next to a river, a very touristic place with a lot of shops, cafes. We walked around, crossed a bridge back to Wisconsin and back, then we went to see Minneapolis.Læs mere

  • Minneapolis

    9. november 2024, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

We spent the afternoon in Murderapolis, it was raining unfortunately, but it was a very nice place, with modern buildings and old factories and mills at the river. We walked through the statue park, where we saw the famous cherry statue. We were actually going to go to a concert at night, but it was cancelled, which was super frustrating, so we just walked around, went to the club area and then left for New Ulm.Læs mere

  • New Ulm

    9.–10. nov. 2024, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☁️ 8 °C

Our new friends from Minneapolis recommended us this 'very German' town, so we spent the night there to see it in the morning. Besides having been established by German settlers and Hermann the German, a Glockenspiel and some fire hydrants painted in blue-white it didn't have much of Germany in the winter, but in the summer they probably have some Bierfest, which must be cool.Læs mere

  • The world's only corn palace

    10. november 2024, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

The tour guide in Madison recommended us to visit the Corn Palace, and we were very hyped about it. Only to be very disappointed, as it was closed, and the whole city was empty. The decoration from the outside was nice though, and everything was about corn in the area.Læs mere

  • Badlands National Park

    11. november 2024, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☀️ 5 °C

We spent the night in a luxurious travel plaza, where we could do laundry, had a lounge and TV. In the morning we drove to the Badlands NP, where we did some hikes with stunning views, and a lot of winds. We drove through the park, saw some animals and stopped at many lookouts.Læs mere

  • Wall - Walldrug

    11. november 2024, Forenede Stater ⋅ 🌬 7 °C

The other recommendation what we got was to check out Walldrug, as it is a thing to go there on the way to Mount Rushmore, a must. We couldn't have missed it, there were several billboards promoting the shop as far as 300 miles ahead of Wall. The closer we got, the more billboards we saw, luring people with free water and coffee for 5 cents. The store had several smaller shops, selling books, souvenirs, clothes, basically everything. Wild west themed decoration everywhere, and a lot of activities for children, which were unfortunately all closed down for the season. But it was indeed an experience, and the coffee was very good.Læs mere

  • Mount Rushmore

    12. november 2024, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☀️ 13 °C

The road to Mount Rushmore is very beautiful, after days of flatland and prairie we finally saw some mountains again. Our friends from Minneapolis recommended us several things for the area, but again, many things were closed in the winter. The whole area is very touristic, with old trains, gold museums, helicopter tours etc. We expected to be able to hike at Mount Rushmore, and spend more time, but there was only a short trail, with some nice views on the sculpture. It was interesting, but we both expected the monument to be bigger and to have more stuff to do in the park. We had a scenic drive though to our next stop.Læs mere

  • Crazy Horse Memorial

    12. november 2024, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☀️ 10 °C

The Crazy Horse Memorial is meant to be the biggest memorial on earth once finished. It's a memorial for the native Americans in the area, it has been constructed for several decades now, with very slow progress. It is kind of a private project of a family, who turned down governmental funding, so the whole thing is financed privately and through the visitors. Which results in quite a personal cult of the mastermind of the project, the grandfather of today's generation, who still work on the monument. We visited the museum about native Americans, which was the family's own collection, and then we had a tour to the monument, where we saw a funny- looking mountain goat.Læs mere

  • Deadwood

    12.–13. nov. 2024, Forenede Stater ⋅ 🌙 3 °C

The other recommendation of the Minneapolis crew was Deadwood, an lawless city from the wild west times. We stayed at a very cool inn, as it was quite cold in the night and it was super cheap. We wanted to do a ghost tour, but it was cancelled unfortunately. We went to a pub instead. The whole town and the pubs were decorated in a western style, photos everywhere of the outlaws, gunmen, brothels, miners and the gold rush from the 1870's. As the gold rush had passed (the last gold mine was actually active till the 2000's) and the state and the law arrived to the city, and the brothels got closed down, many left the town. To get some life back to Deadwood, the city was allowed to make gambling legal, so there are casinos in the pubs, in hotels, everywhere. Before leaving, we checked out the cemetery, where Wild Bill Hickok lays, and other famous or infamous figures of the gold rush.Læs mere

  • Devil's Tower National Monument

    13. november 2024, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☁️ 8 °C

On the way to Yellowstone we found this impressive geological formation. Formed of hexagonal shapes, the result of volcanic activity and erosion of the surrounding sediments. We only walked around the rock, but it is also possible to climb it. Beautiful nature all around, with some wild animals.Læs mere

  • Yellowstone

    14. november 2024, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☁️ 2 °C

After a very windy night at a petrol station in Livingston, we drove to Yellowstone. Most of the park was closed down for the season, which was really disappointing, we missed the main geysers and some nice drives. We did two hikes, around some lakes, saw some travertine formations and sulfur wholes, footprints of bears, a petrified tree and some wild animals. It was very beautiful, but the closures kind of destroyed our plan of driving through the park and see more stuff.
After the hike we went to some hot springs, to warm ourselves and to get our every-other-day shower. It was quite cool sitting in a pool under the stars and between snowy mountains.

  • Teton National Park

    15. november 2024, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☁️ 4 °C

After driving around Yellowstone (and half of Wyoming) we managed to find a gas station which was still open. Waking up was not so nice, it was freezing outside, but the view was amazing. We could already see the Tetons from the car. We drove to the park, where we had breakfast (after realising that every visitor center was closed down for the winter). Then we hiked around a nice lake, had amazing views on the mountains, saw some bisons and a lot of snow.Læs mere

  • Fossil Butte National Monument

    16. november 2024, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☁️ -1 °C

After surviving the night with snow, we went to see some fossils in the Fossile Butte Park. They had an amazing collection of fossils from the area, which was a lake a couple millions years ago. The skeletons and plants were amazingly preserved under the sediment. We also did a hike to an old quarry. There was a vitrine on the toilets with an exhibition of fossile poop, more than 500 pieces.
On the way to Utah we drove on a beautiful road, but had some nice weather and some traffic problems.

  • Salt Lake City

    16.–18. nov. 2024, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☁️ 2 °C

Once we got to SLC the snow stopped and we went to a lookout point. We saw the city from above and the lake in the distance but unluckily it was very cloudy. We also saw an engagement on the hill (while I was wearing two pants and gloves the girl had a dress, the guy shorts, it was crazy). On the way to our inn we stopped at the nicest public toilet of the US - official ranking that we heard on the radio. Today another friend joined us, and we had a nice dinner, finally no fast food.
In SLC we went to the Capitol, which was again quite nice, unfortunately without a view on the top. We were lucky enough to have a small tour of the supreme court room with an associate judge, who told us about the work of the supreme court of Utah. Afterwords we went to the temple square. The temple is being renovated right now (as there are many earthquakes around, it is being made earthquake proof). As a visitor you can only enter after the restauration and before the dedication, but we were able to visit the Conference Center where they gather twice a year. Missionaries from every country were walking all around and giving tours of the building. It was only girls, who spent 18 months there, learning and teaching about the religion. It was quite incredible to learn what they believe in and how the church works.

  • Bonneville Salt Flats

The next highlight of Utah (almost Nevada) were the salt flats. Just like in Bolivia, white salt crust everywhere, with beautiful mountains in the background. We tasted it, it was really salt, but not so yummy. The salt flats are used for car racing, speeding records were broken there.Læs mere

  • Antelope Island

    17. november 2024, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☁️ 5 °C

In the afternoon we went to Antelope Island, where we wanted to hike, but we had some bison problems, so we took another route, with some beautiful views on the lake and the mountains around. A friend of a friend recommended us the place, he even had his engagement there. On the way down the hill we encountered some other bisons, but they didn't really care about us.
The lake is getting smaller and smaller, the island is actually not an island anymore, you see a lot of mud and dry land where once the lake was, which looks very sad.

  • Zion National Park

    19. november 2024, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☁️ 5 °C

We finally arrived to some warmer lands, without snow, there were even some palm trees at our inn. We drove to the canyon to start our hike at Angels Landing. We had to get a permit to enter the trail, a ranger rigorously controled my ID and then we were free to go on the ridge to the end of the cliff. It was a beautiful hike with some stairs and chains over the canyon.
Amazing colours everywhere, sandstone cliffs, polished completely smooth by the wind. We saw many chipmunks on the trail, who were not afraid at all, one even crawled in our backpack. Then we went to the emerald pools, which were supposed reflect the mountains on their green surface, unfortunately they were quite empty. At the end we walked deeper in the canyon untill the trail went into the water. Some people had waterproof pants and shoes and walked even further in the canyon. It must be very cool in the summer, when you can walk in there barefoot. We drove through the park on the way out, it was already kind of dark, but it was very scenic, and at the end we had a clear sky with hundreds of stars.
It was a truly amazing day.

  • Bryce Canyon

    20. november 2024, Forenede Stater ⋅ ⛅ 2 °C

I take back everything about arriving to warmer places. It was -8 Celsius in the morning and we had snow and ice during the hike. In the morning we had some difficulties finding breakfast, but after having the most expensive grocery we started our hike full of energy.
We first walked between the hoodoos (the stone formations), where we saw Queen Victoria and Thor's Hammer. Then we went to a very narrow canyon, Wall Street. Then we walked up to the rim on a quite steep path, to see the whole thing, called amphitheatre from above. It was amazing, all the different layers of colour and stone. We drove on Road 12 where we had some more beautiful vistas. We had a very nice accommodation, where we had dinner and built a gingerbread house, half ready thanks to m&m's.

  • Peek-a-boo Canyon (Olli's Canyon)

    21. november 2024, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☀️ 7 °C

After Olli found a video of a nice canyon on Instagram, and really wanted to go there, we named it Olli's Canyon. To get there, we first had to drive an hour on a very bumpy road ( called as Wellblechpiste, a new word I've just learnt from Olli). Luckily we arrived without concession, only to see the next hindrance: we had to go between two posts to see if we are slim enough to get through the canyon, as it was so narrow. Luckily we were. Then ignoring all the warnings (about taking at least 4 liters of water and checking the weather) we entered the canyon. It was a beautiful landscape, sand and rocks everywhere, then we climbed up to the beginning of the narrow part. At some places you had to climb up the wall, and then down to the bottom again. It was incredible, you could see how the water caved out the canyon. Often we had to take off the backpacks and turn to the side to get through at the narrowest points. In the middle we run into another group, who were walking in the wrong direction on the one-way trail, and got stuck. They were very grateful as we helped them and once we got into a conversation, it turned out that one of them came from Hungary originally, and she was very happy to have met me there.
On the way to our next stop we drove on Road 12, crossing beautiful landscape.

  • Hollow Mountain - Hankskville

    21. november 2024, Forenede Stater ⋅ 🌙 2 °C

We stopped at a random gas station looking for a bathroom, and as we didn't see any store we almost left, when I spotted the sign on the mountain. The shop was inside it, you could really see the rocks in the building. One of us even saw the petrol station in a documentary, as it is something unique. Besides the rocks they had a very nice still life in the restroom and a somewhat unusual sign reminding workers to wash hands.Læs mere
