  • Preparing for take-off...

    August 2, 2017 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

Hey there, trusty followers! The day finally dawned ( I know you are all sick off me talking about it)! We left home at 7:30 for an 11:50 flight due to some terrorist plot foiled a few days ago, and the resultant heightened security. Well, after dropping off Cathy's rental car, we got here at 8:50am, through check-in and security and in Duty Free by 9:35! It's the quickest I think I've ever come through International check in! So, here we are, sipping coffee, waiting for our boarding call. Our first port of call is Auckland, for a 3 hour stop to stretch the legs. Will check in this afternoon!Read more

  • The Streets of San Francisco...

    August 2, 2017 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 30 °C

So not the most pleasant flight out, but we finally made it to San Francisco...the city on the bay. The temperature is a pleasant 23 degrees, with a bit of a breeze. We picked up our rental car, a Nissan Altima, and hit the road. We did a quick drive downtown, found AT & T Park, past the piers, and headed for Lombard Street. There's a million people around, as it seems to still be summer holidays. This was just a quick tour, as we are back in SFO in a few days. We drove to the Golden Gate Bridge in brilliant sunshine, and predictably as we approached, the fog rolled in. No clear shots today, but we'll try again in a few days. We are now heading East to find our digs before hitting Yosemite tomorrow for hiking...Read more

  • Hot August Night

    August 2, 2017 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 30 °C

Tonight, after 3 hours to do 110 miles due to the traffic, we finally made our first digs at Oakdale, on the edge of Yosemite National Park. Due to the late arrival, we had to settle for Denny's for dinner, and now we're stuffed! It was 97 Fahrenheit by the time we reached here at 9pm, so tomorrow it gonna be hot!Read more

  • Bear hunting...

    August 3, 2017 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 30 °C

An early start, we headed towards Yosemite National Park. We needed supplies so we stopped at a tinpot settlement called Grovetown. There we got our water supplies (a must, as it is so hot), and they packed us some sandwiches and we got some yummy Argentinian bananas. Arriving at Yosemite, we stopped at some awesome looks where granite cliffs arise out of lush meadows. Paul dropped Cathy and I at a trailhead, while he found a parking space - no mean feat, as it is the last week of Summer vacation, and every school kid and their folks and grandparents have come to Yosemite! He found us eventually, and we started what proved to be a challenging walk... those in the know will recall Miyajima, and recognise the significance. Suffice to say, this was one steep walk, not as far, but about 15 degrees hotter. However, it was certainly worth it. We were rewarded for our efforts by a bridge, and some quite impressive water falls. I also managed to get up close and personal with a squirrel. We decided rather than risk losing our parking spot, we would catch the free shuttle that traverses the park - a very fortuitous decision, because as soon as we boarded the bus, a baby bear appeared very near to where we stood. No time for a photo, but we considered it a great omen. Our next stop was a more gentle walk to the base of some falls, through groves of pine trees, straight as a die with interesting bark. On the way, we came across a large fallen tree, in a bed of pine needles in a glade by the river - a perfect stop for our simple but delicious lunch... Continuing the walk we crossed a bridge to the base of another set of falls...in Spring , this would be a torrent, and as it was there was a decent fall, and flow. Soon, we were told, the falls would dry up, ahead ofWinter. Foot sore and a little jet lagged, we started the trek out of the park - not easy, as everyone else had the same idea. We were told to allow 2-3 hours to get out. We are seriously hoping it won't take that long!Read more

  • Road to Nowhere...

    August 4, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

So we started from Fresno to take the coast road back to San Francisco. At San Simeon, there's a big Elephant Seal colony...we stopped to take pics... About another 40 miles up the road, there was a big rock slide on the road, with no detour...we had no choice but to turn around and back track about 60 miles, and detour through the Napa Valley, through the vineyards and join up with the 101 North, and hope there's an exit eventually for Monterey so we can get back to the spectacular coast views. Very sad to miss the Big Sur, and the views which are great. I am writing this as we drive, so stay tuned to see where we end up!Read more

  • Leaving my heart in San Francisco

    August 4, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

Ok, so the detour to get back was really long, and regrettably, we just did not have time to get back on the road to Monterrey - the detour added 150 miles! We had a couple of pit stops along the was, for coffee (PS Starbucks US has added a Flat White to their menu - I no longer have to order a latte, extra shot, no foam! Woo hoo! The Aussie invasion has begun!), and have now checked in to our hotel. Paul has taken off to return our rental car (bye Nissan Altima from Idaho!), and on his return, it's off to find some dinner! Exploring for the next days... I've added a couple of random pics from the last two days...Read more

  • This is the one in Francisco Bay...

    August 5, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

After wandering around town for a while, the the millions of tourists around (whose bloody idea was it to come to the US in summer vacation?) we hopped a Blue & Gold ferry to Sausalito, with a thousand cyclists and the remaining thronging hordes. I feel they were aware of my right to the Iron Throne, and have pledged allegiance, but whatever...

Sausalito is a Manly type area, nice, but waaaay too many people. We wandered for a few hours, had fish and chips (served with vinegar!) and now on ferry back to Pier 41. Heading to the Fisherman's Wharf area, seeking some Chowder, then jumping on a trolley car to who knows where. Up to 20K steps already. San Francisco is fog bound still, so no great pics of the bridge, but, I'll post what I have!

Dinner was actually at an Irish Pub, but after another 20K step day, we headed back on the BART foot sore and weary...

    August 5, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

A few more pics from today. I had to put the funny boat shot in...Paul was trying to capture us in front of the Golden Gate Bridge, which of course was fog bound...but this one was very entertaining anyway...I couldn't resist!

Tomorrow we have a very early start: we are being picked up at 5:30 for an early morning flight to Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Will post more in the morning! Stay with me, trusty followers!

I grew up in Wyoming. Seriously, I did. However, arriving in Jackson Hole, Wyoming I was not prepared for what I was to see... The drive from the airport was across plains, and then we hit it...the township is amazing, and what one would expect from a 'Merrican western township...my pics did it no justice...Read more

  • The Grand Tetons on fire!

    August 7, 2017 in the United States ⋅ 🌧 26 °C

After a wander around Jackson Hole (which we must come back to in Winter), we jumped in our Subaru from Montana, and headed east towards a stunning range of mountains that were still snow capped. Unfortunately, we just couldn't capture them well in photos due to the dense smoke haze still lingering from fires that are ongoing in the region. The scenery truly is stunning!Read more

    August 9, 2017 in the United States ⋅ 🌫 20 °C

So, because Beth always had a hankering to see Mount Rushmore up close and personal, it meant an 800 km dash from Yellowstone to Keystone. It was pretty easy driving, and we had a great evening at the PowderHouse Lodge, with great food, drinks and conversation with a couple from Wisconsin.

As we were driving, we noted more and more Harley Davidsons heading our direction. Google Sturgis, South Dakota, and you'll read about an annual motor cycle rally. Thousands of bikes descend on this area every year at this time. They hit all the attractions, who are all geared up for them. The very quaint cowboy town of Deadwood's Main Street was lined with hundreds and hundreds of bikes of all shapes and sizes...

  • Four Dead Presidents & Crazy Horse

    August 10, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

An early start this morning from Keystone , we travelled the short distance to Mount Rushmore. It is a very impressive site, and you can only marvel at the engineering genius of the sculptor and the workers to complete the task of carving outWashington, Jefferson, Teddy Roosevelt, and Lincoln out of granite using dynamite at such lofty heights. Fortunately, no plans to add Trump.

Not far from Rushmore is the Crazy Horse Memorial. This was commenced in 1948 at the request of a number of Indian chiefs to acknowledge the cultural significance of the Black Hills of South Dakota to the Native American Indian people. And possibly not to be out done by Rushmore. The project is entirely privately funded, and a single family drives the project. It reminded us of Gaudi's Sagrada familia in Barcelona for the length of time it has been in progress, and will be until it is finished. You can see the pic of what it is now, and the white sculpture is what it will be when it finishes... They are currently working on the hand...

So, completing this visit, we are making the long dash back to Jackson Hole, Wyoming set for an early morning flight to end in Phoenix Arizona tomorrow. Grand Canyon lookout!

  • If it's Friday, i must be in...?

    August 11, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 37 °C

A very early start his morning to drop off our rental car at 6 am, we headed to the airport in Jackson, Wyoming for the first leg of our jaunt today. A two hour flight to LAX, and on arrival we picked up a rental car for a day's explore. We headed up to Griffith Observatory to get a 360 degree panorama of this big city. Big mistake, it seems, as every darn person in LA wanted to go up there today. Anyway, Cathy & I jumped out of the car, while Paul tried to find parking. As it was, we had to walk about a kilometre up a dusty hill. Paul was unable to find a parking space, and Cathy and I wandered around. Frankly needn't have bothered - LA is a very uninspiring, smog bound city thanks to the coastal proximity to the hills, and the car culture of the inhabitants.

Anyway, we decided to head to Santa Monica, which is always lovely. Again, busy, busy, busy. Cathy and I got dropped off at Venice Beach for an entertaining walk, but after a kilometer of wandering, we decided if we stayed much longer, we wouldn't pass the drug screen, should we be lucky enough to get selected before our next flight.

We battled the traffic to head back to the airport for our next flight to Phoenix. It is a sweltering 37C in Phoenix tonight! We've just collected our next rental car, and now we are heading to Flagstaff to hit the Canyon tomorrow...

  • The Canyon? She was very grand...

    August 12, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

Today was a visit to the Grand Canyon. The last time is saw it was 2009, in mid-winter after a fresh deep snowfall. It was quite different now. We walked the majority of the South Rim, and took some magnificent pictures. The morning dawned cool, but the sun shined bright...til about half way on our walk. The black clouds loomed, hastening our steps. Arriving at the Bright Angel trailhead, the winds picked up, and the temperature dropped about 10 degrees. Time to hit the trail...on our way out of the park, we found a herds of elk. Paul pushed me from the car, telling me to go further, closer!!! This was as close as I cared to get...Read more

  • Vegas

    August 14, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

Two nigjts in a great apartment in Vegas, and we were able to recharge a little after our hectic schedule.

The first night we headed to the Rio resort to see Penn & Teller. They were great, as expected. Dinner was late, after the show...and filling as always.

The next day, we had a very relaxed morning, then headed for The Stratosphere to go up the tower for some good views of this big city. We were going to walk the strip, but at 41°C, it was just too hot! We did a little select stops, and I've never seen the fountain at the Bellagio so deserted - it was just too hot to stand in the sun.

We wandered througj a few casinos, picked up some Mets sock for Ben, and heafed back to the apartment, to make ourselves beautiful for dinner and a show.

We headed out to the M resort for what was billed as the best buffet in Vegas. It is very popular and we had to queue for half an hour to get in. Wow, the food was plentiful and varied. It was seafood night, and i was astonished at the volume of crab that was served and consumed!

After dinner, we heafed back to the Mandalay Bay to go to see a Cirque du Soleil show, Michael Jackson's One. What an amazing tribute. The show was fabulous, and i highly recommend it if you get to Vegas.

Today we leave Vegas, heading back to LA to start our trip to Alaska, via Seattle.

Stay tuned! I'll post some more pics later...

  • North, to Alaska!

    August 15, 2017 in the United States ⋅ 🌧 11 °C

Up this morning we walked around downtown Juneau. This city, the capital of Alaska has only about 31,500 people. The economy seems to entirely revolve around the cruise ship industry. Today, there were four ships in dock, and this occurs every day! There are a heaps of tourist shops on the dock area, and hundreds of people frequenting them.

Cathy needed some time to do some school marking, so Paul and I caught the local bus out the the Mendenhall Valley, and took a very pleasant walk to the Glacier. We saw red salmon in a stream, and the glacier was impressive. On the way back, through the drizzly rain, we saw a mother bear and her three cubs... very special. We took a 4 km walk through the forest, which was gorgeous. It was raining, but I think it is a rare day that it does not rain here.

Tomorrow we catch a ferry to Glacier Bay and Gustavus.

  • On the slow boat to Gustavus...

    August 16, 2017 in the United States ⋅ 🌧 11 °C

Today we are on a ferry heading to Gustavus and Glacier Bay. It's a four and a half hour journey and the weather is foggy and wet. Wet is normal for Juneau. They have a rain festival that goes from January 1 to December 31. Serious - saw the t-shirt, it must be true.

We will be picked up at Gustavus and taken to our lodge...imaginatively named Glacier Bay Lodge.

I'll add some pics on this journey as we go, if we can see anything through the fog!

    Ciao!
