  • Chapman’s Peak, hike with my new friend

    14 de fevereiro de 2024, África do Sul ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

There was one beautiful thing that I forgot to mention about my visit to Langa, the township: I made friend with Vanessa in an instant. ☺️ Vanessa is from Zimbawe, her tribe is originally from South Africa, but her great grandparents were taken to Zimbawe as slaves. She returned to South Africa to finish highschool, now lives in (the better side of) Langa, and sells paintings in the cultural center - that’s how we know each other. ✨ Apparently, Vanessa was looking for some hiking buddies as her girlfriends don’t really hike so we agreed that we’d go together, and we did. 🌈 We climbed the Chapman’s Peak with a stunning view, took around 5 hours for the full hike but mostly because we chatted so much that we just had to stop all the time haha. We were starvin by the end, so went to have fish at a local place which turned out to be a bit too “authentic” to my liking, it was all fine, but definitely not an area that I would go back alone or ever. 😅 Vanessa eventually stayed over, we watched a South African movie until the load shedding came cutting off our fun. 😂 This was my best Valentine’s day ever!! 💖Leia mais

  • Hout Bay, another day of relax

    15 de fevereiro de 2024, África do Sul ⋅ 🌬 20 °C

Today wasn’t a very exciting day but it was just what I needed. I worked a bit, had Spanish class, enjoyed the amazing breakfast and views from my doorstep, and eventually went down to the beach for dinner where a black South African friend joined me for a drink and some great conversations. I could ramble on the topics (mostly about the reality of South Africa) but this rather deserves actual conversations than a post. I’m truly thankful for all the friends I made here for sharing their lives and struggles and hopes and dreams with me so openly and let me into their world - this is what made South Africa most special to me. 💛Leia mais

  • Windmill Beach, kelp forest snorkeling

    16 de fevereiro de 2024, África do Sul ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

So apprently, the movie, My Octopus Teacher, was shot here in South Africa in a very special underwater scenery called kelp forest. Kelp is also called seabamboo as they are pretty similar plants with thick stems and growing 40 cm per day, woah. The kelp forest is home to many special sea species including octopus, sea stars, sea urchins and more. The app only allows me to upload one video but if you want to see the beauty I saw and the animals I played with you must click on the link below. 🤩

    Two fun facts from today:
    - Devon already told me about this in the Kruger but I just couldn’t get myself to believe him so I fact-checked with the diving instructor and here’s the result. You know how are hands and feet get wrinkly when in water? Were you also told that it’s because of dehydration and therefore shouldn’t stay in the water for too long? Yep, this is all wrong. Actually, the wrinkles are an automatic reaction of our bodies ADAPTING to water so that the wrinkles can help us grip better under water. 😲😲😲 Crazy!!! PS. If you stay long enough in the water your gills will also stsrt to show. 😂😂 Okay, this is a joke, but the gripping is true, promise hahaha. 🐠

    - Sorry for breaking your worlds if you’ve seen and loved the movie: it’s sadly full of lies. 🥹 It is not one octopus all the time as the movie was shot over 2-3 years and an octopus only lives for a year. The movie was also shot in different parts of the ocean some in the Atlantic some in False Bay - another proof. And apprently, this guy is really strange, almost like a cult with his family, and when they ran out of money after the movie, they went on holiday meanwhile their house magically burnt down - for insurance money.

Perks of making friends with the diving instructor who is yet again one of the most inspiring people I’ve met here. He used to be in IT, now he dives & snorkells, has projects with National Geographic, he is about to pitch a series to them to create educational content about sea life in Africa, and participates in an initiative where they take kids from the Cape Flats (one of the roughest part of Cape Town) to the water, teach them to swim and how to take care of nature, but mostly to show them another world with full of opportunities in the hope of helping them to find a better future and don’t get lost on the way. 💖🙏🥹💖

  • Cape Town, making the most of it

    17 de fevereiro de 2024, África do Sul ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

Today is my second to last day so I had make sure that I fill it with the last bits of fun before returning to the dark and gloomy reality. 😭 Phew, ended up having a busy busy day. Walked around Bo Kaap area with pretty houses and diverse culture, had some wine and food in a market, went to the biggest African art fair for some beautiful art that speaks to you right away and went out with Vanessa and another girl from the hostel. ✨🌈🔥 I’m not sure if I will able to board that flight tomorrow… 🥲Leia mais

  • Hout Bay-Muizenberg, my last day

    18 de fevereiro de 2024, África do Sul ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

To make my last day special, we signed up for kayaking with Aida, one of my new German friends. It turned out to be really fun but sadly I had the wrong expectation and I thought that we would see dolphins and all which we didn’t… 😭🐬 I was fairly disappointed afterward but I was told that it’s not so likely to see dolphins and where they do, the dolphins are being fed which is very harmful for them in reality. I quickly didn’t feel so sad about it anymore. ✨ Then we drove to Muizenberg, took a shower, went for dinner to Salt for one last time, had a final deep chat about life and all, and it was quickly time to head to the airport. I’m not ready at all to leave… 🥲 And just to make things worse, I got a middle seat for the 12 hours flight, wish me luck!! 🙏Leia mais
