    Amsterdam-Cape Town-Paarl, here we go

    January 20, 2024 in South Africa ⋅ ☀️ 35 °C

After flying through the whole world in a straight line from Amsterdam to Cape Town and coughing my soul out during the flight, I found my dear friend, Anna, at the airport who just finished off 10 days of horse riding in SA & Botswana ready to relax with me as her last etap of her trip. As we had no time to waste, we headed right away to the wine region to conquer as a start. 🍇🍷🐎Read more

  • Babylonstoren, wine heaven

    January 21, 2024 in South Africa ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

Since we arrived late night to our accomodation, we only realized the beauty of de Leeuvenhof estate in the morning. We felt at home right away, especially because it was only Dutch people and us staying here, home sweet home. 😂🇳🇱 A must-do in the wine region is to take the wine tram which is basically a hop-on hop-off tram riding among vineyards = a day of heavy drinking we thought it’s smarter to keep that one to our second day and spend our first day at one highly recommended vineyard, called Babylonstoren. Honestly, this place is just something else, it has it all: beautiful scenery, it’s an eco farm, they produce everything for themselves, amazing food, even more amazing wine. We couldn’t help ourselves and went for a wine tasting of seven types of wine and a meat-cheese charcuterie, my gosh - it was pure heaven. 🤩✨ Here we already noticed the kindness of South Africans but had no idea what crazy stories we will end up with in a week’s time. 👀 The “light & simple” dinner we spent at the estate so that we can jump to bed on time and be ready for the tram at 10.30 am, especially because at this point my voice decided to leave me behind for the second time this year. 🥲Read more

  • Franschhoek, we did get on the wine tram

    January 22, 2024 in South Africa ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

Exciting day today, time for the much-recommended wine tram to explore the best wines and vineyards. There are tons of routes so to make things simple we chose a route recommended by a friend who recently visited SA, the red line with bus first. We first hopped on a wine-tram-looking bus as it was easier to reach some vineyards with that and arrived to our first destination, Haute Cabrière that is a family-owned estate established back in 1694 famous for their Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. As it was only 11 am at the point, we decided to go for some whites & bubbles tasting and very quickly concluded that we are not Chardonnay girls. 😅 Which is not really a problem until the most casually dressed guy shows up at your table being curious about your experience and when you admit this revelation he turns out to be the owner of the estate. 😂 Lucky us, Takuan, the owner was up for the challenge, so he took us down to the cellar and gave us his best wines and even ended up transforming our wine-tram-experience into a vineyard-hopping, driving us around the region, giving us the real experience and insight of a wine expert and extremely fun guy, and even arranged an off-menu dinner for us in his favorite restaurant. 😇✨ We never made it back to the wine tram, but our experience could have not been more authentic and fun!!! 🤩Read more

  • Cape Town, new city-new friends

    January 23, 2024 in South Africa ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

As per usual, we started off with a walking tour upon arriving to Cape Town so that we can get to know the city and its history quick & dirty. Unfortunately our tour guide was a bit too knowledgable and didn’t have the best story-telling skills but it was a nice intro to the city anyway. In short: loads of history and past & current social and economical struggles. Two fun stories for the day.
    1. On our first night I was swiping through instagram when I saw that a lovely friend of mine who was already featured in the South-Central America trip Penguins edition as I know her from Puerto Escondido is renting out her room for a few weeks back in Amsterdam, so I texted her jokily if she’s in South Africa. Well, guess what, yepppp. So we met Maartje in Cape Town, and we’ll be making memories together with her too - what a small world. ✨🌏
    2. After watching the sunset, we decided to check out one of the 100+ spots I pinned in South Africa for dinner. Not only the food and cocktails were excellent in Tjing Tjing, we escaped to the rooftop area from the heat where some kind strangers offered us a spot at their table. Well, these kind strangers turned out to be local “celebrities” too, we seem to attract the cream of people over here 😂 Reyno, the crazily impressive PR smile, is a Royal Genie who is the face of the most luxurious yachts of the world and introduced them when the ride for the first time. Nina co-owns a super cool restaurant called Black Sheep and a bar, Dark Horse. And Andro is a very popular and much appreciated private pedetrican. Turns out, Reyno was in town and they were having their reunion as being brothers and sisters, and got so excited to meet us that we agreed to have a little roadtrip tomorrow to meet the penguins and maybe make our way until Cape Point, the most southwestern part of the world. 🤩 Unbelievable!!!

  • Boulders Beach-Cape Point, the roadtrip

    January 24, 2024 in South Africa ⋅ 🌬 18 °C

So, Reyno, our new friend from last night, didn’t disappoint and obviously forgot that he promised to take us around the peninsula (which is totally understandable considering the amount of alcohol consumed by them last night haha), so we had to improvise, no problem! 😂 We started off with a beautiful breakfast at a beautiful place and rebooted our plan for the day. ✨ Since ubers are the most common form of transportation here and super cheap, we decided to head to Boulders Beach anyway to find some cute penguins - and we did, not one or two, but quite a dozen, cute little things. 🤩🐧 Still hungry for adventure, we got another uber to take us to Cape Point to check out the most southwestern point of the world. When we got there our driver warned us that it’s very difficult to get an uber out there or impossible even so that it would be best if he waits for us and then takes us back to Cape Town. The price was a little too high (still reasonable though) so we decided to risk it anyway - of course. 😂 We got there super late and totally unprepared, we were in our beach clothes, super hungry, and the funicular wasn’t working so we thought we would have to walk up in the extreme wind. Lucky enough after stuffing ourselves with some sandwiches the funiculars started working again and we managed to arrange a minibus ride back to Cape Town with a driver who was there to replace the funicular taking people up and then, so he made easy money on us on his way home and we save 1000 rands, win-win I say! 🤩 The viewpoint was amazing except that we couldn’t spend more than 2 minutes up there without risking that we or our phones get blown off the cliff. 😅 Another day of spontaneous adventure: check ✅Read more

  • Table Mountain, a light morning hike

    January 25, 2024 in South Africa ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

If Anna didn’t have enough workout over her 10-day horse-riding trip, then she definitely did climbing the Table Mountain - just like me. 🥹 We were warned about some things about the hike, especially the safety and starting early, not so much the difficulty. Well, we had quite the hike. We started going up at 8.50 am together with many other hikers but apparently this was already too late. The strength of the sun is just something else here in SA, the trek was difficult on its own but the dry heat was just too much. We were going from shade to shade and took many breaks, only to enjoy the view, of course, not because we were on the verge of passing out. 😜 The 650 m ascent took us 2,5 hours but it was definitely worth every second of it and felt like a victory when we made it up. 🥳 At night we re-met our new friends and Nina managed to squeeze us in for dinner in her restaurant and we had the best food ever. 🤩 We closed the night off with a drink in her bar and called it a night after another long and fun day. 🥰Read more

  • Clifton 2nd-Waterfront, Anna’s last day

    January 26, 2024 in South Africa ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

Today was Anna’s last day, after days and days of back and forth, she decided to go home and not extend her stay with a week or so. 🥲 We took the day very slow, breakfast in our favorite spot, Conscious Kitchen, then chill on the beach, then finishing it off with a walk around Waterfront (which is disturbingly touristy but we could see some seals from super close proximity) and managed to found the most local spot of the neighbourhood for a goodbye dinner. It was another day well spent, no crazy stories to report on besides having an hour of history class with chatGPT so that we finally got some proper insight into the upsetting past & present of South Africa. Anna, I’m gonna miss you! 🥹💛Read more

  • Clifton 4-Lion’s Head, the city’s magic

    January 27, 2024 in South Africa ⋅ ☁️ 26 °C

Not to despair: I’ve got myself a new travel buddy. 🤩 Thank you shitty winter weather in Amsterdam, that you destined us with Maartje to enjoy South Africa together!!! 🪐 We started the day off with a brunch in a local artsy spot with a vintage market, then headed to the beach, Clifton 4th this time, then after a short rest & shower sesh we headed up to Lion’s Head to watch the sunset. 🌄 Another time, we got some warnings to make sure that we are well prepared and luckily we decided not to bring the bottle of wine to enjoy on the top as the track where soon turned into rock-climbing, hanging on for our dear lives haha. The wind wasn’t as crazy as typically but this didn’t make the climb much easier. But the view… it was worth all the adrenaline boost on the way up and even more so on the way down. We just couldn’t get enough, had to stop every 5 meters for a next picture an d a next picture. Thank you nature for being so beautiful! 🥰 At night we went to town for a drink or two in one of the famous bars-clubs and hoped that we’ll manage to snooze in a little tomorrow morning. What a special day again! ✨Read more

  • Muizenberg, arrival & first day

    January 28, 2024 in South Africa ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

On Sunday I joined Maartje for her next destination, Muizenberg, which is known for its perfect waves for beginner surfers but also turned out to be a much-much more authentic, real side of CT. The first night we went out for dinner and had a very disappointing burger in a very cool place with great views, I don’t have any pictures, but if Maartje does, I will add an additional post. ✨ The second night turned out much more magical, after a full day of work, we went to Kalk Bay for dinner which was voted to be one of the coolest neighbourhoods by the Financial Times. The food & wine was delicious at Salt but the real magic only started after dinner: a full-blown double rainbow!!! Unbelievable, never saw something like this before 🤩🤩🌈🌈🌈Read more

  • Muizenberg-Kalk Bay, second day

    January 30, 2024 in South Africa ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

In the morning I walked from Muizenberg to Kalk Bay which is a very picturesque 40 min walk on the shore and spend the day working from Bob’s Bagel where the ladies behind the bar were listening to such amazing music that I had to ask and eventually one of them even offered to take me out and show me the nightlife of CT where I can listen to the local music. 🤩 After work I walked around the neighbourhood which is full of galleries and shops, had some mojitos in a Cuban bar which was so well decorated that it was a real throwback to my forever-love country. 😍 The food however didn’t look so nice so I was “forced” to go back to Salt for another round of good food & vibe. ✨ During dinner, guess what, I made some new friends who told me about a monthly event in CT, first Thursdays, which is a massive street festival held on every first Thursday of the month (hence the name 😜) and convinced me to go!!! I was contemplating to go with Maartje to Langebaan but I was already doubting as it’s quite far and is most known for kite-surfing so now I made up my mind: I will depart from Maartje and go back to town. ☀️Read more

  • Muizenberg-Cape Town, walk on the beach

    January 31, 2024 in South Africa ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

Today was another tough day at work, the layoffs were just announced and as expected super badly managed… oh well, luckily I’m in an amazing place and have ten thousand things to take my mind off of work 🤩 Before I headed back to CT, I went for a final walk on the beach, soooo cute, I really loved this neighbourhood, much recommended if you want to escape the tourists for a little while. 😇Read more

  • Cape Town, first Thursday madness

    February 1, 2024 in South Africa ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

Today I had a very holy location to work from: a church 😂⛪️🙏 it was quite a vibe and the coffee was amazing! After attending some more calls about life after the layoff, I was so ready to have the promised fun at the First Thursdays. By booking a hostel I kind of hoped that I would make some friends and stroll around the city together, but this was not the case, not even a little bit. But I’m unstoppable anyway 😂 so went on my own, checked out some galleries, found a cool spot with some upcoming djs, then joined some new friends at a super cool place, then we went to another spot, where I made even more new friends with whom we went to even another spot. Very long night, but very fun, the only challenge was that I booked a township tour for tomorrow morning, whoooop 🙈Read more

  • Cape Town-Langa, the sad reality

    February 2, 2024 in South Africa ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

It took me a while to get the enegy to write about this day… in the past 2 weeks I already got quite some insights into how colonization fucked up yet another country but out all of the countries I’ve visited South Africa is the one where the impacts are still extremely visible to the day (Bolivia follows right after). I’ve never felt so white in my whole life even though the Dominican Republic is also mainly black and this just got even more real and painful today. I had many friends who visited South Africa before and overloaded me with tips, but no one mentioned anything about townships or the possibilty to visit them. Totally understandable - it’s extremely controversial to go and look at other people’s pain but without going you cannot actually comprehend the reality of black communities in South Africa. When the apartheid started people were sorted to white, indian, coloured, black categories and soon after the homes of black and coloured communities were demolished and they were relocated to the outskirts of cities, called townships. Now 30 years after the end of the apartheid things are not a lot better but the only thing you hear as a tourist, don’t go there, it’s extremely unsafe… so I had to see the reality with my own eyes and I didn’t find anything else but kindness, extreme poverty and heartbreaking past, present and future of the community of Langa which is one of the biggest townships. My tourguide grew up and still lives in Langa, told me about the history, and answered all my burning questions that I couldn’t ask anyone so far as this topic is widely disregarded and ignored. We first visited a small museum, the first art gallery of Langa, the first cafe, and then we walked into the middle of the misery. The rooms in the pictures and videos host families of 5-8 people, and the one with the bunk bed is an orphanage for 38 children!!! The lucky families can get to live in a room of concrere house which was built as a barrack for single men to work (=exploited for cheap labor) during the appartheid, the less lucky ones in tin houses that are like an oven during summer and like a freezer during winter. Unbelievable conditions… We met a family whose tin house burnt down and the mum jumped into the flames to save her baby, they got zero support from the government to restart their lives. We talked to some ladies in the market selling sheep head as that is the cheapest part of the sheep that they can buy and cook for customers. And lastly, we visited a pre-school with the cuttest little kids ever, so well-behaved. 💛 The sad reality is that it’s almost impossible for people in townships to move out of the township ever as they all need to commute for work and therefore never be able to affort to buy a property. At the same time, actually, there are some of them who now have a better living and have proper houses right next to the tin houses, they call it Beverly Hills of Langa, but they still prefer to stay in Langa as their hearts belong to the community forever. 🖤 I also learned Mholo and Enkosi in Xhosa, the language spoken by the community (most of them never learn English and without English they are not employable), which mean Hi and Thank you. ✨This was a tough day, very emotional, but these people are full of hope for the upcoming elections and look forward to a brighter future (which is already on the way since the apartheid ended). Enkosi to my tour guide, Chippa! 🫶Read more

  • Cape Town-Llandudno, my fav beach

    February 3, 2024 in South Africa ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

Okay, so I found my absolute favorite beach so far in South Africa, Llaldudno 🤩 It’s beautiful (when it doesn’t have crazy rough waves), not so busy as it’s a bit more far out from the city, and has amazing sunset view 🌅 Today was my recharge day where I spent the first half in the hostel pool playing with a little girl whose mom works in the hostel and the rest I just chilled on the beach so that I can be fully ready for my 5 am wake-up alarm to head to the airport and then to the safari!!! 🐘🦁🦏🦒🦬Read more

  • Johannesburg-Kruger, my next adventure

    February 4, 2024 in South Africa ⋅ 🌩️ 34 °C

Storytime, folks! I was in a big doubt if I should make my way to the Kruger National Park, the biggest safari of South Africa and one of the biggest one of the workd all the way from Cape Town as it’s extremely far and typically very expensive. So I did quite some research to see what possibilities are there, collected them, narrowed it down to three tour operators, and ended up posting it in a Facebook group that is for travellers in South Africa to get some advice which one to choose. This post turned out to work is magic and a girl commented super soon after that actually there is an amazing backpacking hostel in the park (fine, a private park right next to Kruger) with amazing vibe and they organize game drives as well as some other trips/hikes too. Interesting! No matter how hard I tried to find some bad reviews about the hostel, I could only read amazing things so I just had to go for it: booked my flights to Johannesburg (2 hours), my transfer (6 hours) and my stay from Sunday to Friday. Today I woke up at 5 am and reached my final destination around 7 pm and found myself in the coolest hostel EVER. ✨ I quickly made friends with the hostel staff and agreed to go to the safari tomorrow morning together as I was the only guest for now. Lions, leopards, elephants, giraffes, better prepare yourselves, I’m coming!!! 🦒🐘🦬🐆🦁Read more

  • Kruger, morning game drive #1

    February 5, 2024 in South Africa ⋅ ⛅ 34 °C

As always, I’ve got no time to waste, I started my first day at 5 am and went for my first morning game drive. Since I was the only guest, some of the hostel crew joined me and Rene (one of the owners) for the drive, and we had the best fun ever!!! We had tons of sightings, I couldn’t get enough of watching NatGeo in real life from a hand-reach. 🤩 Luckily, we played bingo during the drive so I could keep track of the animals we’ve seen. Tons of giraffes, zebras, elephants, babies too, hippo ears and noses on the top of the water, monkeys, buffalos, gnus, impalas, crocs, tons and tons of birds including Zazu, many-many Pumbas (warthog), but the coolest and scariest of all was a hyena who circled around our car, brrrr, I still get the chills. 🫣 The last photo I took at the hostel with my new friend, a tiny impala. 🤩 At night one more girl arrived and I let myself to be convinced that I should do another morning drive with Devon (the other manager), as well as a night drive in the dark organized by the park, not the boys, so another early morning was waiting for me, but at this point and at this level of excitement: who cares??? I’ll sleep when I’m back to the rainy and dark Amsterdam. 😜

  • Kruger, morning game drive #2

    February 6, 2024 in South Africa ⋅ ☀️ 35 °C

Well, what a hell of another day!!! 🥹🤩🌈 I always had great beginner’s luck but never expected that the second morning drive can get even better than the first one… we had amazing luck already in the first 90 mins: we saw three teenage cheetahs chilling & playing, a lioness checking out her territory right next to a leopard just casually melting into a tree branch, tons of zebras, elephants and birds and birds and birds. But what made this drive extremely special is the bond with Devon (the other manager) who ended up training me into his co-pilot and co-ranger for the day and could answer ALL of my questions that I bombarded him with about the animals spiced with uncountable amount of laughs. ☺️☺️ After the drive we spent some more time at the lunch spot with the amazing view, swam, chilled, then got ready for the night drive which was so-so amazing and special and uncomprable to anything I’ve ever seen before that it deserves it’s own post, so stay tuned!!! 🐾

  • Kruger, the night game drive

    February 6, 2024 in South Africa ⋅ ☀️ 35 °C

Sorry y’all I was on duty of the torch at the night safari so I didn’t take any photos besides this beauty and I’m still waiting for the others to upload their pictures, so coming soon!!!

Meanwhile - some photos have arrived, waiting for more, but look at some of our lucky sightings: we saw 9 lions crossing the road, chilling, heard them calling for each other, and hung out with a leopard for 20 minutes, casually walking on the gravel road, marking his territory. Even the ranger was impressed, it’s not every day that you see a leopard from such close proximity!! 🐆

  • Kruger, the lucky goodbye drive

    February 8, 2024 in South Africa ⋅ ☁️ 31 °C

Not sure if you’ve kept count of animals I saw in the past days, I did and I was clearly missing the rhino from my big 5 list. Since it’s only a few rhinos in the park and they typically hang out in another part of Kruger, I totally accepted my fate that I’ll have to come back another time to see one but then, the magic of Kruger struck again… my original plan was to do a sunset drive after half-a-day of work but the weather was so cloudy that it was not worth it, so Devon came to my rescue and offered to take me out for a final little ride to Kruger as a goodbye (or see-you-later 💖). We were just leaving the hostel when I was saying that it’s only the rhino I need to see but the chances are very low when Devon stopped the car and yelled: there’s the rhino!!! WHAT???? He joking??? He wasn’t, there it was, literally 50 meters from the hostel by the fence 🥹🥹 I was shaking and shed some tears for the unexpected surprise, it was unreal!!! Devon was probably a shaman in his previous life and pulled all strings to make my stay unforgettable 🫶🙏 We then drove out to the park, saw some zebras, giraffes, impalas, gnus, just the usuals, some lions in the distance, and said goodbye to the park. • Cape Town, always listen to cool people

    February 11, 2024 in South Africa ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

Today I was hanging out with a Canadian boy from the hostel, he’s a helicopter pilot currently based in Botswana in one of the most special safari area and flies rich guest from A to B while spotting some giraffes and animals from the air, he’s basically an air-ranger haha. How cool is that? 🌈 I was happy that we could hang out as we also discussed hostels are a bit strange in SA as people don’t really stay there to get to know people and connect, even in a super social hostel like ours, especially because 60% is germans, 30% is dutchies, and the left-over 10% is only internationals; kinda annoying tbh. 😅 Matt had plans for the evening so I didn’t really know what to do with myself until our bar guy in the hostel (who is otherwise a musician, soul/jazz singer) told me to go across the road to check out a place with live music. Oh yeah!!! ✨ The concert turned out to be magical, the band of a South African singer was playing, she played the marimba and some kind of special instrument, and created such a vibe and feeling of community that by the end everyone got on their feet. 👏👏👏 I love love love being guided by the enthusiasm of other people: when I’m told you MUST go with sparkling eyes, then I go, no questions asked. 🙏☺️☺️Read more

This morning I joined my two new friends, Cara and Aida to climb the Lion’s Head another time - it’s been so much sitting in South Africa and it’s such a fun hike that I couldn’t skip it. 🥾⛰️ I continued the day with some work then hopped into an uber to get to my accomodation for the upcoming three days. I chose this place based on the amazing view from estate and it didn’t disappoint (only the wifi and the shower did haha). I only have a night picture of the view, but I will have some more tomorrow. ✨ For dinner I took a 45 min light walk to an Italian place (it was all fine but it’s not really recommended tbh I just couldn’t stay put), had some great wine and a pizza, and called my mum a bit to catch up.
