  • Derby - Birdwood Downs Station

    21. august 2021, Australien ⋅ ☀️ 33 °C

Had some quality time with Lyla and Byron while Kat and Shaun went on the Horizontal Falls Tour today.

It’s going to be so sad when we have to go our separate ways, I am going to miss these guys soooo much.

We sure had fun today starting off with pancakes. Then we dog napped the care takers dog Chestnut for a good 1.5 hours and played fetch and took him for a walk. He was a beautiful puppy. We made some cookies, then it was time for a Byron’s nap. While Byron slept we squeezed in some school work ( Lyla’s fav part of the day! I am not joking). We went feather hunting, watched a movie with a super dooper and cooled down under the sprinklers. It was an action packed day! Oh we also fed some chickens 🐓.

  • The Bungle Bungles free camp

    23. august 2021, Australien ⋅ ☀️ 34 °C

When Kat gets sick of chasing Byron around the camp site she sticks him in a bucket bath! Today Byron stood up one to many times and tipped his bucket bath right over 😂😂😂😂.

To quote Brax and Lachie they “found the mother load” down at the river today 😳. They then brought the mother load back in a bucket to share with all of us 😬. A few escaped when the lid was removed and had to be chased down!Læs mere

  • Purnululu National Park

    24. august 2021, Australien ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

We hit the road at 5.30am so we had the whole day to explore the Bungle Bungles. It is a 57km dirt road in and you are not allowed to take your vans in so we left them out the front in a free camp.

After being on the road for 10min Brett asked me how much the helicopter flights in were 😂😂.

We made in it in, in about 1.5 hours and stopped for breakfast.

We did the Bungle Bungle loop walk and the Cathedral walk. Whilst doing the Bungle Bungle loop walk we came to a ‘cathedral’ and Kat and I were quiet underwhelmed. We thought it was the Cathedral that everyone raves about at the Bungle Bungles. As we continued on our walk we came to the actual Cathedral Gordge and were pleasantly pleased and understood why people made the trek out to see it.

  • El Questro- Zebedee Springs

    27. august 2021, Australien ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

Zebedee Springs, what a little hidden treasure.

32 degree plus thermal springs, surrounded by lush green palm trees, what more could you want. It was like a tropical paradise in the middle of nowhere.

We soaked in these pools for 2 hours, I was in heaven. I loved a bath when I lived in a house, and this is this closest I have come since, I did not want to leave.

  • El Questro - El Questro Gorge

    28. august 2021, Australien ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

El Questro Gordge was the longest and apparently the most spectacular walk here, so we thought we would tackle it first. We knew there was a middle pool, so Kat and Shaun could at least stop there if they needed to. We headed out at 6am to beat the heat.

Most of the walk was shaded by beautiful palm trees. The whole walk was just stunning, bright green palm trees posed against the orange of the gorge walls.

The best bit about the walk was we were rewarded multiple times by swims in crystal clear pools of water. We took our time stopping to swim and relax along the way. The 6.8km round trip took us just on 7.5 hours to complete, but I would have to say a lot of that time was spent swimming and it was a perfect way to spend the day.

  • El Questro - Emma Gorge

    30. august 2021, Australien ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

Our last gorge at El Questro was Emma Gorge. It felt like a short stroll in after tackling the El Questro Gorge.

Once we reached the end we got to swim in a beautiful but freezing pool. On the side there was a small thermal waterfall that we squeezed into to try and warm ourselves up.

Emma Gorge is in a seperate part of the station, it is part of a luxury resort. Once we finished the walk the kids were straight onto using the pool, as we were El Questro guests were we allowed. The adults treated themselves to some poolside cocktails and beers to cool themselves down. We spent the afternoon relaxing by the pool while the kids swam. Where do they get their energy??? Well I mean Lyla gets hers from being piggy backed by Uncle Brett on her walks 😂😂. Her piggy back ride today was so relaxing she fell asleep.

That time we snuck into Zebedee Springs before it opened and had the whole place to ourselves.

  • Ivanhoe Crossing - Buttons Crossing camp

    1. september 2021, Australien ⋅ ☀️ 34 °C

Found this ripper of a spot to camp on the other side of the Ivanhoe Crossing.

It was a bit of a mission to get in ( and out) but like always we managed and it was well worth the extra effort to be camped up in this magnificent spot. We even found a croc on the opposite side of the river bank. We are pretty sure she was only a fresh water croc, although we still made sure to stay well away from the edge, as salt water crocs also live in this river.Læs mere

  • Lake Argyle

    2. september 2021, Australien ⋅ ⛅ 34 °C

We made it to Lake Argyle, got straight into a site and set up. It was stinking hot so we headed for the most photographed pool in Australia to cool down ( and take our photo of course).

After our swim Kat and I had to go and sort out some more nights accommodation, we may have gotten side tracked by a sign for a watermelon cocktail and ended up at the bar.Læs mere

  • Lake Argyle BBQ Boat

    3. september 2021, Australien ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

What a day, 9 hours exploring Lake Argyle on a BBQ boat.

The backdrop was stunning and the water temp was perfect. We weren’t even to worried about the thousands of crocs we were swimming with.

We made good use of the BBQ on board, cooking bacon and eggs for breaky and then snags for lunch. We took so much food we could have stayed out there for days 😂😂.

We found heaps of crocs sunning themselves along the edge of the water in Croc Bay.

Then we hit up Jump Rock a few times to cool down. Brett was the only one brave enough to jump off the highest point ( well Lachlan wanted to of course, but I wouldn’t let him!).

Then, so quickly the day was over, we were all so glad we had the boat for the whole day. We relaxed and enjoyed our time on the boat and really explored Lake Argyle 😎.

  • Lake Argyle - Last day together

    4. september 2021, Australien ⋅ ☀️ 32 °C

For our last day together we chilled ( or sweated or butts off) at Lake Argyle. It was a scorcher of a day, so while the boys sorted some stuff out, us girls hit up the pool with the kids.

We went for one last walk together, so Lyla could get one last sweaty piggy back ride in with Uncle Brett down to the jetty. She commented at the end “what a long walk it was”. 😂😂

Sunset nibbles and cooling off under the hoses ( lucky there is plenty of water here).

Then one last drink together at the bar. There was live music until the rain threatened to come and the musician packed up quick smart, so we went back to the vans to watch the storm roll in over the hills.

  • Goodbyes

    5. september 2021, Australien ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

Today we had to say our goodbyes 😭.

Shaun and Kat are off to the NT and we are heading back down the WA coast.

COVID changing the way we intended on doing our lap and meaning we can’t head back to NSW for the Christmas break.

We had a ripper last 2 weeks in Western Australia together jamming in The Bungle Bungles, El Questro, Ivanhoe Crossing, Lake Argyle, sneaky cocktails, and a BBQ boat to end our time together.

Here’s hoping they surprise us at 14 Mile 😜!

  • Boab Quarry

    6. september 2021, Australien ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Brett sure knows the way to my heart, picking a quarry full of boabs to camp at for the night.

It was stunning for a quarry, we had what felt like a garden outside our front door, then all around us were these amazing rock formations. We went exploring around the rocks, and there were numerous caves. It was a bit scary climbing inside and sqeezing through the tunnels not knowing where you were going to end up. Luckily, Brett has a better sense of direction than me or we might still be in there trying to find our way out!

Lachlan spent the afternoon working out how he could get the big boab nuts out of the tree and nearly lost an eye with the contraption he made! He was determined to get a big one so he can carve it like he saw some of the locals doing.

  • Horizontal Falls - 2

    8. september 2021, Indian Ocean ⋅ ☀️ 33 °C

Never a dull moment on this adventure, as quick as they have you off the plane and onto the boat, they have you off again and onto another activity. This time it was shark feeding! As you can imagine the kids were just hanging for this one once they heard about it. You even got to get in the tank and watch through a cage!

Lachlan kept on sticking his fingers though the cage and patting the shark’s stomach. He said the man told him he could do this, but I was not to sure about it. I am sure he strictly said “ do not put your fingers on top of the cage” which would also mean to me though the holes !

After watching the feeding the kids got to feed the sharks some fish, which made their day.

It was then time for a bit of relaxing and a cruise down Cyclone Creek, where we were lucky enough to see a Kimberley Dessert Rose. They only flower for two weeks a year and are very rare.

  • Horizontal Falls - 1

    8. september 2021, Indian Ocean ⋅ ☀️ 33 °C

Bucket List item ticked off last night.

Brett and I had planned on taking the kids on this special adventure before we left on our Lap of Aus. We put aside some very special money that was left to us by Granny and planned to use it for this special adventure. It has been the highlight of our trip. I think that she would have loved that we used the money for a family trip, because she use to love to travel.

The kids could not contain their excitement and fear ( Braxy) about getting on a plane for the first time. The kids and I got the back seat, which meant we were in for a bit of a bumpy ride. Brax gripped my hand most of the way there and was starting to look a little worse for ware, I started to think he was going to throw up. Lachlan on the other hand loved every bumpy minute, not worried at all, looking out the window the entire time. As the plane came in to land on the water the kids were overcome with joy and excitement, they were even sprayed with water through the air vents which they thought was great. I loved watching their faces the entire time.

  • Horizontal Falls - 3

    9. september 2021, Indian Ocean ⋅ 🌙 22 °C

Brett and I didn’t want to waste a minute of our time at the Horizontal Falls, so we got up at 5am to enjoy a peaceful tea and coffee while the kids slept and we watched the sunrise.

After a delicious BBQ buffet breakfast, Brett was straight onto sussing out the next boat ride. Whist I was in the toilet he found driver Dan and found out which boat we were going on. Brett and the kids got themselves life jackets and lined up ensuring they were first inline, we wanted front row seats and we got them!

This boat ride through the falls was quite different to yesterday’s. Driver Dan again warned us that if we are up the front we could get wet. We didn’t pay much attention, as yesterday no one got a drop of water on them. As we approached the falls we could tell that today was a little different. We were informed that overnight there had been over a 10 meter high tide, one of the highest tides they have gotten. This meant we could not go through the second gap. At first, I was extremely disappointed. After some very fun jet boat action through the first gap and Brax getting mighty scared ( all he could manage was “ whoa, whoa, whoa! 😆) I could not stop laughing, the look on his face was hysterical. We arrived at the second gap and it was mind blowing. The water was gushing in all different directions creating whirl pools and torrents of water around us, between the gap was a waterfall drop of at least 1.5m, with a rainbow glowing over the top. You could feel the heat radiating up of the water below, and driver Dan’s warning was right, today we were not getting wet, we were getting drenched. There was water coming at us from every direction as Driver Dan inched the boat into the falls so we could get a better look. You could stay and watch the falls for hours, unfortunately the changing tides means you only have a limited amount of time before you can’t get back through the small gap to get back to the house boat.

To Brax’s dismay this meant more jet boating, of course Lachlan loved it, it was right up his alley.

By the time we got back, we were wet from head to toe, and our cheeks were sore from laughing and smiling so much.

    What a thrill!

  • Horizontal Falls - 4

    9. september 2021, Indian Ocean ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

Straight off the boat and onto the plane for our scenic flight home. I didn’t even have time to get changed! On our flight in the falls were not running, so we didn’t fly over them, but on the flight out they were in full throttle. One last view of the falls before we headed home. What a way to see them, it was spectacular.

Luckily for us ( Brax) the strong winds they had predicted had not hit, so we had a lovely smooth flight home and Brax was a lot more relaxed and even took a window seat this time. Brax insisted that it was the female pilot that we got on the way home and that she was just a better driver 😂😂.

  • Gibb River Road Day 1

    10. september 2021, Australien ⋅ ☀️ 34 °C

Here we go! The tent and air beds are packed and we are ready for a camping adventure.

Our first free camp on the Gibb is a beauty, we had it all to our selves, someone even left us a pile of fire wood so we didn’t even have to go find our own. There was some water in the river so we were able to bucket it up to wash our black feet before going to bed ( at 7.30 🤣).Læs mere
