Also a picture of the weather as we came into Santander, which was lovely but happily it didn't actually rain...brrrr!Meer informatie

Casa Velha is ‘basic’ but clean and the people friendly

  • Zimborio do Senhor do Padrao

    19 juli 2018, Portugal ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

'Lantern Tower of Senhor Padrao'. The 'Lord of the Pattern' marks the place where, according to local legend , the image of Bom Jesus de Matosinhos was given to the coast on 03 May in the year 124.

Certainly a place that has been marked since the beginning of the twentieth century , however, at a later date than 1758, the present dome was built, known also as 'Lord of the Sand', since until the beginning of the 20th century this monument was completely isolated in the middle of a wide sand , possessing, therefore, a strong visual impact.

The emergence of a freshwater source at the site in 1733, then reputed to be "miraculous", gave rise to the smaller building that can be seen next to the dome.

It has been classified as a National Monument since 1971

  • Tragédia do Mar

    19 juli 2018, Portugal ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

In 2005, the monument 'Tragédia do Mar' was inaugurated on the beach of Matosinhos, a sculpture tribute to the shipwreck of 1947 with about three meters of height, composed of five figures of orphans and widows whose faces show the tragedy occurred in 1947. It was sculpted by José João Brito, which was based on the screen of the same name created by Mestre Augusto Gomes

In 2007, 60 years after the tragedy, the Municipality of Matosinhos decided to recall the fateful history by publishing the book 'Shipwreck of 1947 - Toda a Saudade is a Stone Wharf' which presents a detailed account of the events and includes photographs of all fishermen who died that day. In order to recall the tragedy, a chest was buried on the beach of Matosinhos with one of the books inside, to which was attached a black ribbon two kilometers long.

  • Lisbon (Lisboa)

    20 juli 2018, Portugal ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

So after a trip of some 350km (220 miles) I arrive in Lisbon, or nearly...this has been quite a journey not least for 'breaking down', although a lovely mechanic fixed this by simply tapping the starter motor!

I started at 09.20 from Matosinhos, and am pretty tired but the worst is yet to come as I now need to find my way through Lisbon to the 'Alfama' (Old Town) and suddenly the roads are heaving, especially after the 'busy' autoestradas

  • Graca Church

    21 juli 2018, Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

Really looking to see the interior of the Graca Church, which is right next to the 'Ponto de Vista' Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen, but there was a wedding being held today, so will return in the week and find out more!

This building was 'next door' but appears to be a part of the church itself and inside there is an exhibition of 'The Procession of Corpus Christi', which was instituted by Pope Urban IV in 1266

In 1777 it was proclaimed that ...the procession shall have no heifers, giants, snakes, dragons and grass matts, cars or other similar things that used to represent the crafts, nor any kind of dance, nor the moors that used to accompany St George; no woollen pallium shall go in the procession but a richer one; the senate shall order the placement of chains in the entrance of the streets that lead to the procession

Lovely little garden next to Santa Luzia Church of the Knights of Malta, with superb views and great atmosphere. There are some nice Azulejos scenes on the side of the church, nice flowers, a busker while I was there, and a few people peddling useless things for tourists

Not a great place to visit but the neighbourhood is interesting so a lovely place to stop and take a beer and put your feet up with great views

  • Campo Mártires da Pátria

    23 juli 2018, Portugal ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

A large garden area half of which is occupied by Jardim Braancamp Freire (Campo de Santana), with the statue at the end honoring Dr. Sousa Martins and the Faculty of Medical Sciences of the New University of Lisbon, which occupies the site of the old bullring.

The other half is a quiet park area with fountains and filled with a real variety of birds

The statue, Dr José Tomás de Sousa Martins, was a doctor renowned for his work amongst the poor in Lisboa. After his death, a secular cult arose around his personality, in which he is thanked for 'miraculous' cures, due to his tireless work with charity and his trying to help the most disadvantaged; his figure assumed contours of a saint, which can be visible in the ex-votos placed around his statue.

  • Grande Guerra (1914 - 1918)

    23 juli 2018, Portugal ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

Full title is: Monumento aos Mortos da Grande Guerra (Monument to the Dead of the Great War)

A monument erected in memory of those killed in World War I, and also the glorification of the living combatants, inaugurated in the early 1930's. The inscription carved on the stone: 'At the service of the Motherland, the effort of the grey.'

The figure of the Fatherland appears to crown the Soldier, a laurel wreath. The two large figures to the sides, in stone, represent two men bent under the weight of the upper part of the monument, who strive to keep the country upright, the reason for the monument.

Stopped for a Sagres and a ‘Pastieis de Nata’ at the Ribadouro where they, allegedly, serve the best Tiger Prawns in Lisboa!

  • Ascensor da Gloria - Funicular

    23 juli 2018, Portugal ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

The Glória Funicular (Ascensor da Glória), sometimes known as the Elevador da Glória (Glória Lift), is a funicular railway line in Santo Antóniol. It connects the Pombaline downtown (Restauradores Square) with the Bairro Alto (Garden/ Overlook of São Pedro de Alcântara).

It should be noted that this was designed by Raoul Mesnier in 1882, who also created the Elevador de Sant Justa, in 1901

Although described as a funicular, it does not truly qualify as the traction is provided by electric motors, the cable merely links the two cars together so that they ascend and descend simultaneously.
