During our boat trip, I had possibly the oddest genuine text message I’ve ever received. Our mobile phone company is in the habit of sending messages to us when leaving home saying “Welcome to” wherever and telling us the exorbitant cost of roaming calls and all that.

This time the message started “Welcome to Sea”. Very odd.Read more

Severn Bridge parkrun

Having driven across to Wales yesterday, I took the advantage to take in an unusual parkrun which starts in Wales, enters England then comes back again. Severn Bridge parkrun was definitely an experience.

Before parkrun, the run director clearly has a unique style, opening the introduction asking if there were any pagans and druids running today – there weren’t, it’s significant due to May Day apparently. The finish of the run was in a foot tunnel under the Severn which just bounced the noise from supporters everywhere and was really something quite special.Read more

Clifton Suspension Bridge

On the way to Reading today, we crossed the Clifton Suspension Bridge having seen it from below last year when visiting Bristol. It was surprisingly short actually but we had the opportunity to walk back over it which definitely reminds you how high it is but was also quite cool looking down at where we walked in Bristol when last here.

At one end of the bridge it has it’s own visitors centre and in there we had the pleasure of hearing a funny exchange over the price of a little charm thing. As the next customers we got to have a bit of a laugh about it, but perhaps didn’t expect the staff (probably a volunteer we surmised) to tell us quite how horrible one of the necklaces they were selling was. They were right – it was awful but you don’t expect the staff to tell you that really.Read more

Reading station & the Three Guineas

After a slowish start and finishing packing for the next few days, we went to pick up our train at Reading station, but not before a sort of reminiscing drink at the Three Guineas, the pub right at the entrance of the station. This place was always the one where I’d try and get in a quick drink before picking up a train to Southampton when I was travelling between two places a pandemic or so ago, and the two of us had shared a few memorable drinks there in our time in Reading. It was a good start to our journey.Read more

Thames Head Inn

So we arrived in Kemble, got our bearings and then walked to our first stop of the day – the Thames Head Inn pub. This was clearly a focal point for the area, a status befitting its position as the only building for probably a mile in any direction. We walked inside, past a map on the wall showing the path to the source of the Thames which we’d missed up until it was pointed out to us when asking at the bar which was the right way to go to get to the source of the Thames. Poor map reading wasn’t a good sign for our trip.

The Thames Head Inn was a lovely-looking place and it would have been lovely to have a look around had it been a bit quieter, but it was Sunday lunch and absolutely heaving. What little of the menu we saw sounded great and smelt terrific. Just before we got our 2 large glasses of wine the person before us had come in to attend their booking for 4 and a dog. That seemed fitting.Read more

Source of the Thames

On, then, to the Thames itself. On leaving the road up a little path, as directed by that map at the Thames Head, we found that literally, our first act had to be to climb a stile – the first of a fair few today, most of which were before the beginning of our walk proper. We tried to look elegant climbing with our big bags. We probably failed.

The source of the Thames was about a mile away. First, we had to cross a live railway line. Which was nice.

Having evaded death, the walk to the source was simple enough as this was clearly a path many people had been along in the past. The actual source was little more than a few rocks and a stone marking it. That was enough and pretty much what we’d expected with there having been little rain lately. Although of course it was raining very gently for much of today but that didn’t dampen our enthusiasm.Read more

On the way to the station we walked on the path between the station and the Thames Path itself. This path actually was the side of a field of sheep. Lovely sheep except on this occasion one particularly adventurous lamb had somehow got onto the other side of the fence and been separated from everyone else seeing much bleating on all sides. This lamb wasn’t a great fan of us walking alongside the fence either whilst we were just trying to pass while staying out the way the best we could. When we came past in the taxi later I think the lamb had got back on the right side but since we’ll have to cross that field again to start tomorrow’s walk I’m hoping we’ll not see him on the wrong side of the fence again.Read more

The first full day of our trip saw a pleasant start walking through lots of fields. The sheep who had got himself stuck had clearly found the enormous gap under the gate dividing the fields and rejoined his mates.

The first bit of the walk was very rural mainly crossing through fields all running next to the Thames. Pleasant enough but a bit samey after an hour of it.

The Cotswold Water Park was nice but I suspect they don’t want you to see whatever shenanigans is going on inside because of all the trees surrounding the area.Read more

We entered the village of Ashton Keynes about a mile early due to a mapping failure somewhere but a pint was still welcome at about the halfway point in the day – the White Hart Inn’s beer garden made a very nice spot indeed.Read more

In the end, the rain stopped within an hour or so, but everything around us particularly the long grass we seemed to be walking through all the time was quite wet.

Pretty much three-quarters of today’s walking was in fields. Occasionally undulating but always slightly rough ground and probably what no one’s ankles need when taking on this sort of challenge.

We had a semi-planned stop in the village of Castle Eaton today, but just before we got there we had the pleasure of yet another field but this one had cows in it with pretty much the entire herd all gathered on the actual path so we had an extra detour through the centre of the field trying to avoid the not-so-little presents cows tend to leave behind them.

Our stop in the village would have been at the Red Lion pub were it to open on Tuesdays, but instead, we found a bench and made do with a drink of our own. The stop was much appreciated.Read more

After a section of paved roads, we were back onto fields again and that was pretty much us for the rest of the afternoon. We walked past an airfield mysteriously not marked on any map we’d seen but no aircraft were seen, suspicious or otherwise.Read more

Drink and duck watching at The Riverside

On arriving in Lechlade, we were first greeted by a lovely high set of steps up onto the bridge that takes you into the village. We just needed more steps about then. Mind you, a nice cold pint of lager was on the other side of the bridge so it was worth it.Read more
