Woke up 12.30. Did laundry. Went to Emerald Buddha. Was kinda cool. Saw turtles and fishies. Took a coffee break. Headed off to the botanical gardens and zoo. Gardens were cool, zoo was average. Some animals looked really sad. Lots of beautiful flowers. At sunset went to the 49th floor of the Bitexco tower. View was awesome. Especially at night. Afterwards had a bahn mi and a bowl of pho. Met up with friends and had some sushi. Came home with yet another food baby.Leggi altro

Woke up to the sound of a roommate farting and snoring. This was at 8am. Had a nap until 10am. Got out of bed at 11 and got ready to check out. Went downstairs and waited for my friends. Once they were ready we met in the street and caught a taxi to the main bus depot. Bought tickets and waited for the bus. At 2 we boarded the bus and set off. Took 2hrs to get to Ben Tre. Hoped off at Ben Tre bus depot. The staff at the bus depot kindly organized a taxi for us. Taxi arrived. Got in taxi and headed to the motel. My friends and I got to our rooms and settled in. At 5.45pm we all gathered and went for dinner. Originally we were meant to go for snail pancake but couldn't find the shop. Instead we went to a vegan restaurant. It was tasty and very cheap. After dinner we strolled towards the night markets where I bought another bucket hat. Walked the whole market and set off for home. After about an hour's walk we got back and went to bed.Leggi altro

  • Ben Tre day 2

    28 febbraio 2020, Vietnam ⋅ ☀️ 32 °C

Set off at midday and went looking for a Mekong boat ride. Found a guy called Mr. Phi and bartered with him for the boat ride. Agreed to a price. Waited for 5 mins before a medium sized big boy boat arrived, with old mate who would become our driver. Set off down the main strip of the Mekong. There were many large big daddy boats carrying all sorts of produce e.g coconuts, bags of rice, sand, the list goes on. We finally turn left into a more local area. Our first stop was a honey farm. At first me and my friend weren't sure what to do, so we walked around the place for a bit. Old mate signalled us to sit down at a table. Two shopkeepers came out and started making us a tea. It's base was Jasmine tea, a squeeze of lime, sprinkle of pollen and a dollop of honey. It was unbelievably amazing. They also gave us samples of delicious chocolate and dried bananas to which I bought a packet of each. After a few more teas we set off to our next destination. A coconut farm. There we tried coconut candy, a specialty in Ben Trè apparently. I bought a packet, of course. Unfortunately they didn't have dried ginger, so I ate all the dried ginger samples. We then got led to jugs filled with coconut wine and snakes. I had two shots. They tasted...alcoholic. After getting turnt we moved on. Our next stop was at a market where half the stores were open. I was confused. Old mate finally caught up to us and led us on a 10 minute walk. We met up with an old lady mate and a little girl. They took us to a small river mouth where a small boat was waiting. We all hopped in. Old mate and woman paddled whilst me, my friend and little girl chillaxed. The journey was about 5-10 minutes of relaxing serenity. Not much noise pollution, just the sound of paddles paddling the water. We ended up where old mate had docked his big boy boat. Switched from little boat to big boy boat and set off. We stopped at brick farm. So many bricks. Set off back to where we started.

Saw the sunset whilst watching locals fly kites. Actually stumbled upon it by chance. One of the better sunsets I have witnessed.

For dinner we went and had street food, my friend had cold noodles with pork and I had pork soup. For second dinner I had an unbelievable Bahn Mi and dessert was a smoothie. Headed back to the accommodation.

  • Can Tho day 2

    2 marzo 2020, Vietnam ⋅ ⛅ 32 °C

Started the day off waking up at 4.30. Had to get ready for a river cruise. Met my mates outside my hostel. Met the tour guide and the two other people. Got driven to a small dock where we boarded a smallish boat. 6 people in total. The boat set off down the river, headed for the floating markets. On our way there we we're blessed with an amazing sunrise. The orange hue of the sun was simply breath taking. After a few minutes gawking at the sunrise we continued towards the Cai Ran floating market. We found out Cai Ran means crocodile tooth in Vietnamese. We sailed through the limited amount of ships selling wholesale fruits and veg. There weren't as many ships as I had expected. Nonetheless it was great to see the different kinds of produce each ship sold. After passing through the Cai Ran market we moved on towards a smaller 'market'. It wasn't really a market more so a bunch of ships gathered together selling meals, singular fruits and snacks. We all got to have pho on the river which was delicious. It was fun seeing how all the boats interacted with each other. If they thought you wanted something they'd hook the boat to yours. Our tour guide bought some mangoes, fresh and fried bananas and dragonfruit. When we all finished our pho we headed off towards a fruit farm. The farm itself was cool, it had a lot of different fruits growing. The experience though was a little underwhelming. We didn't get to pick anything, just look and take photos. After our quick tour of the area we relaxed in mini cafe. I ordered a papaya juice. It tasted as advertised, no sweetener, just juiced papaya, which was quite refreshing. We relaxed for a out 15-20 mins before we moved on to a rice paper factory.

The factory was one of two in the area and the less touristy of the two. All their machinery and equipment was under a straw hut. The tour guide went through the process of making the rice paper step by step. We then got to churn out noodles. After having a quick sit down and snacks we headed back to the drop off.

My friends and I caught a taxi back to our hostel and agreed to meet up later. I was so tired that as soon as I lay down I was out cold. I woke up 2 hours later to a few messages saying we're at a cafe. I packed my things and headed off to meet my mates.

We discussed our plans and had coffee. The place was quiet and peaceful. When we finished our plans and drinks we went on the lookout for food. We decided to go to the baguette place from yesterday. After our little snack we meandered of to some markets to look for some souvenirs. Found nothing. At 6 pm we went and had dinner at local food stalls. I had a variety of skewers, which were delicious. To wash it down we went to a coffee shop across the road. After coffee we headed back.
