  • Alleppey cruise

    19 de janeiro de 2024, Índia ⋅ ⛅ 32 °C

We did a stop on land and bought some king shrimps which the crew were happy to cook for us. What a feast! washed down with some local beer we ceratainly ate well.

The kids insisted on giving Mum a massage. Mum eventually relented though they did go a little crazy!

It is quite spectacular cruising the backwaters, definitely one of the highlights of the trip so far.

  • Alleppey cruise

    19 de janeiro de 2024, Índia ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

Stanley had a go at fishing, but not a lot of fish biting this time!

Dinner was yum (though someone should tell those girls they aren't supposed to play with their food!). After a game it was bed. In the morning it was so serene.

This has totally been the highlight of the trip so far!

  • Wedding invite

    22 de janeiro de 2024, Índia ⋅ 🌙 29 °C

We walked the beach on the way to dinner and came across a wedding on the beach. We smiled and next thing you know we were invited to be in their photo and of course we had to get our photo back :)

  • Village festival

    22 de janeiro de 2024, Índia ⋅ 🌙 29 °C

We befriended our taxi driver (as we always seem to do!) after one very short ride. He told us there was a festival on that evening in his village and asked if we would want to go. Of course we said!

He messaged us to confirm and came to pick us up in his taxi which we shared with his 2 children. With 7 in the car there was a bit of sitting on laps but as they say in India there was always still room for one more!

The festival involved a celebration of elephants with a procession around the temple along with chanting and drums. There were also some dancing performances, one that included his daughter.

We bought some balloons for the kids and this created much joy along with the giant bubble maker that the local kids did there best to pop before they could escape. A few made it over the multiple story buildings across the road which pleased everyone immensely!

Definitely another highlight of our trip.

  • VR Lulu Mall

    23 de janeiro de 2024, Índia ⋅ ☀️ 33 °C

We did a visit to Lulu mall where Mum and Dad bought glasses (3 pairs for Dad and a million dollar pair for Mum).

A highlight for the kids though was the virtual reality machine. Great fun!

  • Laundry visit

    24 de janeiro de 2024, Índia ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

One of the must do things in Mumbai is to visit the ghats.

Located in the slums all the laundry for all the hotels gets done in the slums. Our visit was later in the day so it possibly wasn't as spectacular as it would have been earlier but seeing all the towels hung out is quite impressive. What was even more impressive is that what we saw was all of the laundry being done by hand, would be back breaking!

Our guide was a young boy who met us at the drop off spot and he led us through the area and up the narrow stairs to get to the best vantage point. Truly remarkable how the right laundry gets back to the right people, it is an incredibly massive operation. The man told Mum that they tag every piece of laundry so they can track it. Good manual system befitting India!

  • Cricket at the Oval

    24 de janeiro de 2024, Índia ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

There is always room in a big city in India for a space for cricket to be played. It was the middle of a week day and there were plenty of games going on. Stanley and Dad decided to help out with some fielding and before you knew it we were in the game :)

We love our India, and our cricket!

  • Gandhi Museum

    24 de janeiro de 2024, Índia ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

With Gandhi such a significant figure in Indian and indeed world history it felt obligatory to visit a museum dedicated to him.

A massive part of the fight for India's independence from Britain, his hunger strikes to stop the violence that was happening in India at the time hugely influenced the history of the country.

Such an impressive man who lived such a spartan existence partcularly later in life. Dad bought his book and later discovered he already had a copy at home!

  • Hanging Gardens

    24 de janeiro de 2024, Índia ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

We weren't quite sure why these were called the hanging gardens as there wasn't a lot hanging!!

The most interesting thing to us was the tall building in the background. We were told this was owned by the wealthiest man in India who occupied it all to himself with many floors housing his expensive cars. The building had 3 helipads on it but the local council decided to not give him a permit to land helicopters meaning he has to navigate the Mumbai traffic with all the commoners! We liked that story as much as the taxi driver seemed to!

On arriving at the park a man looked Dad in the eye and shouted "C'mon you Spurs" which Dad immediately responded in kind. Afterwards we realised neither Dad nor Stanley were wearing any Spurs gear so how he knew we were fans (or was it just a random coincidence?!) we will never know!

  • Ethical Slum Tour

    24 de janeiro de 2024, Índia ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

We were pretty hesitant to do a slum tour even though we had been told it was okay to do, especially the ethical one. We did a little research and felt there would be benefits to the local community in providing money from tourism so we decided to go.

The Dharvi slum is home to approx. 1 million people over a 2.39 square km area. It is said to be the largest slum in the world and certainly has one of the highest population densities in the world.

We had no idea the extent of industry that occurs within it. Our guide, who herself lived in the slum, showed us all the activity that goes on, including recycling of all sorts of materials but especially plastics, garment manufacturing and of course laundry.

We visited the shop and bought some bags. Certainly what was shown to us was not abject poverty but rather positive industry. We were shown a local school and it was very much just like any other School and community.

Around the corner was a river that was full of rubbish and smelt pretty bad. Our guide explained the locals put their rubbish there and it was hard to stop. Once a year the government would clean it out only for it to get full up again.

Fair to say we weren't so enamoured with the treatment of animals.
Interestingly when the local government attempted to 'clean up' the slum they built apartment blocks and gave them for free to the slum residents. Rather than living in them the residents elected to stay living in the slums and rented out their new apartments! Certainly that story is consistent with the industriousness we saw but also the strong sense of community that was very apparent from the people we met.

  • Food Tour

    24 de janeiro de 2024, Índia ⋅ 🌙 25 °C

At night our driver took us on a food tour to try some of the local foods and flavours. Getting to each place was also very much a part of the adventure!!

The pani puri was definitely a favourite with plenty of zing and spice in the little balls that you basically pop in your mouth and let the flavours explode!

Definitely another highlight of the trip though fair to say Mum and Dad enjoyed the food a little more than the kids!
