Day 1 - Travel - Colombo via Singapore

    24 de diciembre de 2023, Bay of Bengal ⋅ 🌬 29 °C

We kind of knew it was going to be a big day of travel but I don’t think you can really prepare for it! That was our opening line last year when we trekked to Dubai but this was much tougher. Alarms set for 3.40am we wanted to leave by 4am to be at the airport by 4.30am, last check in was at 5am for our 6.05am flight to Auckland. When you have to get up that early you kind of just don’t sleep, in case you sleep in, so that was how we started.

Flight to Auckland was on time, all good. 7.10am we are in Auckland. Next flight is 11am to Singapore. 4 hours of waiting around at an airport usually means McDonalds! Lara had 3 hash browns, Stanley had 1 along with half of Dad’s monster sausage roll. Mum has a cheese scone. All is good!

10 hours of flight means we will land in Singapore at 9pm NZ time, not the right timing to get any sleep. Dad watched Barbie (at Mum’s insistence) and was very ‘meh’ – disappointed Oppenheimer wasn’t showing. The New Boy was a good movie though. With internet on board Dad set about trying to finish last year’s travel stories on FindPenguins – better late than never!

Stanley watched Barbie and Mean Girls (at Lara’s insistence!) and listened to music. No kids meals for this flight much to the kids disappointment! Air NZ in-flight movie selection was appalling, nothing to watch. Hopefully they’ll have a better selection come January for the return flights home.

4 hours in Singapore makes us 1am NZ time but we are running late by an hour. Plenty of time to check out the butterfly garden and cactus garden and water lily garden, lots of gardens (though the last 2 were really just smoking areas!).

We managed to stay awake and not miss the flight. Is 3.5 hours to Colombo, what are we up to – 6am NZ time? An hour to get our bags – they had to be the last ones off the plane! Sort out a SIM card, get some money, our poor driver had been waiting for close to 2 hours! His patience was admirable! Was a quick 15 minute journey to the Hotel we think it was maybe 27 hours of travel time – pretty shattered! Hotel was just fine for a place to sleep. We made it!!

  • 1st Night in Sri Lanka

    25 de diciembre de 2023, Sri Lanka ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

Kids are a little sleepy but wake up on time no problem. The Hotel is perfectly adequate for our needs but Breakfast at the hotel is a hard pass – the coffee and tea sachets in our room are 2 years out of date so a no-brainer really.Leer más

  • First Roadtrip in Sri Lanka

    25 de diciembre de 2023, Sri Lanka ⋅ ☁️ 31 °C

It's Christmas Day, but not very Christmassy! We had a driver booked for 10am. We were told there was no point in hanging around Colombo so we wanted to get going early (but not too early!). Our driver is Aruna, very nice chap with lots of tips for lots of things!

On our travels we pass the corn bbq’s. Mum had so wanted to try some in India so we weren’t going to miss our chance this time! The man sold boiled and bbq’d corn so we had some of each. Our driver also highly recommended we try the king coconut. Much sweeter than normal coconut. The monkeys were cute and kept their distance so nothing stolen today!

  • Sigiriya Village Tour

    25 de diciembre de 2023, Sri Lanka ⋅ ☁️ 29 °C

Once we got to our Hotel in Sigiriya we dropped our gear and headed straight back to town. The Travel Guides had done the Village tour so we had to do that too!

First up was the bullock cart ride. Our bullock wanted to go into the ditch for the greener grass but fortunately our driver was strong enough to persuade him to change his mind! Just a short journey down a lane and back for a bumpy but fun experience.

Next up a tuktuk ride to a little lake and we got on a little boat and ventured out. Dad had tipped the man 1,000 rupees after the bullock ride not realising he was also taking us out on the boat. He stopped by the water lilies and made us all hats out of the lily pads and the kids and Mum a flower decoration, we felt like maybe he looked after us a little bit extra!

Then we jumped on an improvised tractor and cart to take us to our destination for lunch.

  • Lunch at the Village Tour

    25 de diciembre de 2023, Sri Lanka ⋅ ☁️ 29 °C

Lunch was a 7 curry buffet just for us! The lady of the house was great in explaining what she was doing and Mum and Lara got to make a coconut sambal paste, Stanley pounded the rice seeds to extract the rice and we all got to sit and enjoy the experience!

We had to eat with our fingers and the food was definitely traditional. At least there was plain rice and fruit to keep the kids happy!

  • Sigiriya Dinner

    25 de diciembre de 2023, Sri Lanka ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

We finally made it home in the early afternoon and there was time for a swim! We made new friends with a family from French Canada. They were on a 5 month trip of a lifetime. They had planned to start in India then work it out from there but with the political tensions between the Indian and Canadian Governments they could not get visas so it was in Sri Lanka we meet. Thomas and Charlie are one year younger than Lara and Stanley so they had great fun in the pool playing volleyball, football and turtle and frog spotting.

Mum and Dad sidled up to the swim up bar only to find out that all the spirit bottles on display were fake and there was no actual swim up bar! Regretted not taking a photo but we thought that a fake swim up bar was quite funny!

We walked back to town for dinner past loads of stray dogs (and the occasional gun fire that made us jump!). Our rotis for dinner were delicious! Lara had Chocolate, Stanley had Egg, Mum had Banana and Dad had to have Cheese of course! Happy campers. Home to bed at 8pm, early start tomorrow!

  • Day 3 - Lion Rock

    26 de diciembre de 2023, Sri Lanka ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

Today we got up at 4.40am with the mission to conquer the famous Lion Rock. We booked the Tuktuk through the hotel and he was there ready to go at 5am. Was a short 10 minute ride to the rock but Dad left his bag in the back of the tuktuk! A guide came to the rescue saying he knew where the driver would be so we set off in pursuit. Sure enough he was there, bag retrieved, crises averted! (But one job!!)

Apparently it is 200m high and has 1,200 stairs to the top and boy did we feel every one of them with our very tired legs!

  • Lion Rock

    26 de diciembre de 2023, Sri Lanka ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

The palace itself must have been pretty impressive in its day from the size of it. It was built by King Kashyapa in the 5th century after he had usurped the throne by killing his father and banishing his brother, I think that’s how you did things back then!

Prior to the King taking over it was a monastery and after his brother returned from India in 495AD to reclaim the throne it was returned to the Buddhists before it was abandoned in the 14th century then it was ‘lost’ until it was rediscovered in 1831.

Our guide explained they used to bring the King up on a carrier befitting a King with the tall man at the back and a short one in the front. How they scaled the sheer cliff faces at all let alone carrying a King was beyond us!

The entrance is called Lion's Gate with the rock face resembling a Lion face and Lion paws were carved out of the rock either side of a grand staircase.

We saw where the two main castles were, the swimming pool and two small pools. Then the auditorium and the dance floor laid out in front of the royal throne that also looked out towards where the sun rises. This palace was used for 6 months a year when it wasn’t rainy season with another Palace for the other 6 months.

Our guide was eager to get us back because there were plenty of people waiting so Dad decided to pay him out so we weren’t rushed. Coming back down was via the caves and Stanley was very pleased to see examples of ancient Sri Lankan porn on the walls! The wall of mirrors was another highlight, though it obviously needed a bright sun, extra polish and some reflection off the rock to work.

On our way down we were seduced by a local carver with his hidden lock box and an elephant carver. We paid about 6 times what the opening offer was from the salesmen at the gate. An early lesson in bartering learnt!

Back home at 9am everyone was very hungry for breakfast and what a great feast it was! A combination of local foods and stuff we are more familiar with like toast and jam and fruit. We thought we would never be able to eat it all but we did! With nothing else planned for the day it was relaxing by the pool so we could recharge our batteries. Stanley managed to catch some fish (but put them back) and had to rescue a few frogs from the swimming pool!Leer más

  • Last Dinner in Sigiriya

    26 de diciembre de 2023, Sri Lanka ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

For Dinner we went to a cute little restaurant on the lane where our Hotel was. They sold beer (though it wasn’t on the menu!) Mum & Dad were pleased! Lime juice for Stanley and Pineapple juice for Lara, freshly squeezed – delicious!

With half a beer in Mum she proceeded to regale the family with tales of woe! There was the ghost train fire in the late 70’s where heaps of people died because they could never have found the way out! There was the roller coaster disaster on the gold coast. But the favourite was the school mate whose father built the Gooding family home and lived around the corner but it all went bad when Poppa took him to Court and whose son ended up being a mass murderer. Mum could not control her hysterical laughter when telling everyone what ‘crop dusting’ meant to airline hostesses! It took about 8 minutes for us to hear the answer as every time we got close Mum would start laughing again! In case you were wondering it is what they call it when hostesses fart when passing the seats of passengers they don’t like! Mum blamed it all on culture shock.

The meals were delicious! Our first kottu in Sri Lanka, we think we might have this for dinner every night in Sri Lanka!!

  • The Blue Train - Kandy to Ella

    27 de diciembre de 2023, Sri Lanka ⋅ ⛅ 31 °C

Today is all about the Blue Train. We have to leave at 7am to get to Kandy by 10am to meet the man for the tickets. The train is due to leave at 11am and it is a 7 hour journey. We paid USD143 for tickets that should cost about USD20 but Dad didn’t want to take any chances in missing this once in a lifetime opportunity!

Before we leave we have to return the volleyball to our new friends from Canada. Mum wrote a note so we could swap WhatsApp numbers. We wanted to get the contact for the Kerala houseboat but also we thought it might be great to swap travel stories 😊

We made it to Kandy station with 30 minutes to spare. We had Second class reserved tickets and seeing the mass pile up in third class and the race for seats in second class unreserved we were very happy with our choice! The Blue Train is of course Red today though! Ah well, we won’t be able to create that iconic picture quite so perfectly but I am sure it will be fine!

We did manage to get some photos hanging out of the train which is the
epic shot. We had thought that we would be going over the 9 arch bridge but no that is on another line just after Ella, we will go and visit it tomorrow.

  • Ella Hotel - Leeches!!

    28 de diciembre de 2023, Sri Lanka ⋅ 🌧 21 °C

Our driver met us at the train station. We drove through Ella township, man it was stunning! Looking forward to exploring that tomorrow but for now we just want to get to our Hotel and find somewhere to eat. Thinking that would be a relatively straightforward thing how wrong we were! The driver drove up the hill in increasingly tight bendy corners and narrowing road until we got to a very narrow and steep side street. We got less than a ¼ of the way up it when the driver aborted saying we couldn’t make it! He phoned the Hotel to come rescue us, only a tuktuk could make the rest of the journey!

10 minutes later the tuktuk man came and after one attempt he said someone had to get out and walk up the hill and round the corner as it was too steep with us all on board! Mum took the fall and after another 7 or 8 minutes of ever diminishing roads we eventually arrived at our Hotel. If I had known what we were in for I wouldn’t have picked it to stay there!

The Hotel staff were lovely and made us cinnamon tea while the man went back to meet our driver to collect the bags. 30 minutes later we were taken to our rooms. Stanley and Lara were very close to reception, twin double beds – perfect! Mum and Dad had to climb about 40 slippery stone stairs with not a lot of light to get to their room. We are sure the view will be amazing tomorrow when there is daylight!

We needed dinner so we asked the man where we should go. He walked us down a small road and pointed to some stairs and said down there, 1 minute, restaurant 10m to the left. A bit like Fiji really, it was more like 5 minutes and we turned left and knocked on some poor unsuspecting family's door who informed us their home was not a restaurant! They helped us find the way down yet more steps to the main road and sure enough there was a restaurant.

The place was quite busy so the owner showed us to the spare tables downstairs, apologising as it was busy. We initially thought this isn’t so nice but then Mum noticed a leech on her ankle! Yes, you heard right a LEECH!!

Blood was poring out of her toes and leg and after a frantic search about 7 or 8 more scraped off her skin. Dad then discovered one on his ankle and after another frantic search another 5 or 6 blood suckers were pulled off. After chasing them around the room with our shoes stamping them to death and the waiter helping to kill them where he could, we were very grateful that this little show was held away from the main dining area!

Lara and Stanley luckily did not get bitten but Dad had to pull one out of Lara’s shoe as it was trying to burrow in! We all felt very icky and decided there and then we weren’t walking back up those stairs! Our dinner conversation involved much Google searching about Sri Lankan leeches, we need long pants and leech proof socks for the rest of our Ella trip!

Fortunately the food was amazing, chicken burgers for the kids, pumpkin soup for Mum and Dad took the chicken curry (someone had to eat something local!).

We took a tuktuk home and did another frantic search for leeches when we got there. Just one on Dad so we all took showers and double checked there were none that got in the room. Pretty grossed out but we have a big day of fun tomorrow so we just have to harden up! Didn’t expect to be collecting that anecdote this evening!! Hopefully a better day in store tomorrow!

  • Rawana Zipline

    28 de diciembre de 2023, Sri Lanka ⋅ 🌧 23 °C

We arranged to meet our driver at 8.15am at last night's restaurant. Plan was to do Ziplining first thing, Little Adams Peak and the Nine Arch Bridge. But it was raining lots of rain! The kids agreed we suck it up, Ziplining it is!

We met another Danish family at breakfast so it was stories of Hojland scoring his first goal for Man Utd in the Premier League as an easy connection. The Danish Dad was delighted at this news! Breakfast was simple but hearty fruit, toast and eggs along with coffee and tea.

We headed down the scary stairs and got a message from Aruna saying he would be there in 10 minutes, 45 minutes later…

The zipline was up a muddy and cobbled pathway, a 25 minute walk. The zipline cost us $130 US and it was only 1 line of about 800m. Dad was not overly impressed! The kids of course wanted to do it again – no was the answer to that!

  • Nine Arch Bridge

    28 de diciembre de 2023, Sri Lanka ⋅ 🌧 23 °C

The clouds had fully rolled in so there was no point in going up to Little Adam's peak. Dad questioned everyone who had come down and they all said the same thing so we headed off to the Nine Arch Bridge.

The Tuktuk drivers said it was a 1.5km walk so offered 2,000 rupees return. We thought we would suck it up and it turned out to be a great call as the tuktuk’s could only travel 1/3 of the way before the path became only walkable. Again lots of muddy pathway to get there but we made it – along with 100’s of other tourists!

Was really neat being able to walk the track and get different perspectives. When it came time for the 12pm train the tourist police would blow their whistle and get everyone off the railway line. Dad and Lara sat on the bridge while the train went by trying to get the perfect selfie but is was completely ruined by some tourists putting their phones into our view to catch the train across the bridge. Boy Dad was pissed at that!

We bought pineapple and mango off the salesman, so sweet and delicious we bought another one of each!

The walk back up was tough going but we felt good about saving 2,000 rupees! It starting raining really hard just as we got back to the road which was a little lucky.

With not much else doing we thought let's do the tea factory tour. The drive out was a lots of narrow roads again but the factory was a beautiful 1940’s building built by the British. The tour was only $10 and gosh it was good value. We heard all about how tea was made and how the plants were grown and looked after. Afterwards we walked through the manufacturing plant and saw all the machines at work and the different grades of tea being split out and dried and sorted.

Finally the tasting! Delicious! Mum had to buy some product so it was chocomint tea and green tea with jasmine.

The weather is not better today! The rain is even more! Little Adam's Peak is a no go so we head off to the Blue Water Pond Cave. With all the rain we are thinking about the flooded caves in Thailand but we set off anyway. At least it ought not to be raining inside a cave right!

On the way is the Rawana Falls. Pretty spectacular waterfall but with all the rain the water is dirty and there is a lot of water! Just time for a quick selfie then on to the cave.

  • Caves

    29 de diciembre de 2023, Sri Lanka ⋅ 🌧 24 °C

Dad spoke to the lady to ascertain if there was a risk we were all going to die and was convinced that though it may be a bit slippery, death was unlikely so we were in! It was a 600m walk into the forest to start before coming to a little camp site where we could take shelter and get our hard hats on and lights installed.

Before we set off the guide took a moment to pray by a little monument then went over to the hole and prayed again. We looked at each other and thought with all that praying for our lives, we should all be sweet!

Was pretty narrow in some of the early parts but once through that as long as we checked our footing and used our hands to help it was generally all pretty manageable. There was lots of little bugs attracted to the lights, we certainly got a few up the nose and in the mouth! Not tasty at all! Inside there were bats and we saw one spider that was so big we were too scared to take a photo of him!

The guide was a lovely chap, explained all the rocks along the way. Such diverse colour and we had gold (wasn’t so sure about that), iron, calcium, stalactites, images of elephants and old rock drawings.

Highlight of the trip though is the pond that sits at the bottom about 800m down. The water is usually crystal clear and it is an amazing swim. With all the rain though it was a lot higher and not swimmable so we didn’t go in. Apparently you can swim under the rock and come out into a pond on the other side when the water is lower.

The trip back up was tougher and it certainly got hotter as we worked up a sweat. Well worth the visit.

Strangely though after a few minutes the taste in the mouth becomes very sweet and fresh. The taste lingered for ages and was really quite amazing. Glad we persevered after that initial bite!

With all the rain we headed back to Dream Café and had a late lunch and played some pool. Home early again so we could conquer those stairs in daylight, must count them tomorrow! We catch up on journals and photos then a couple of games of Rummikub and it's an early night. We are on the move again tomorrow, looking forward to some drier weather, fingers crossed!

  • Stopped by the Cops on the way to Kumbuk

    30 de diciembre de 2023, Sri Lanka ⋅ ☁️ 29 °C

The day didn’t start so well! We had said to the driver to meet us at the local restaurant at 8am. After a flurry of WhatsApp messages and much agitation he arrived at around 8.50am. Not impressed! We were heading to the elephant safari so really wanted to try and get there early while there was no rain and we had the best chance to see the most elephants.

Our excitement happened when our driver was pulled over by the cops! We didn’t really understand what it might be for but the driver explained there were some lights on his windscreen that were not allowed and these police were very strict. However the Police now thought he had been drinking and wanted him to come to the Police Station.

After frantically consuming some antacid and another substance from his glove compartment and borrowing Mum’s water bottle to wash it down he headed off to the Police Station. Dad took the opportunity to put the washing on the car to dry it out – It was 31 degrees and wasn’t going to let this opportunity go to get the raincoats dry!

Our driver insisted he only had 1 cocktail the night before and while the cops didn’t believe him (and nor did we judging by the bags under his eyes) they let him go without a fine or charges. The Policeman came over to apologise for the interruption but we cheerily insisted it was no problem at all and wondered if he would let Mum have a photo with him which he dutifully obliged! Another great story for our travels! Our driver said if he lost his licence it wasn’t really a problem as the Sri Lanka system was not computerised so if they take your licence you go to the next town and say you lost it and get issued a new one. Great system!

We eventually made it to Udawalawe National Park. This park is very famous for the Elephants but there are lots of other animals here too. Our driver advised us to say Stanley was 9 and Lara 11 and 9 months (but tall for her age!) so we could get a good discount! We didn’t want to upset the system so we went with it!

The jeeps were really neat, open aired with elevated seats at the back which Lara and Stanley really appreciated. Some of the ‘roads’ were pretty bumpy but it was an adventure!

Our driver was great at pointing things out that we had missed like the iguanas sitting in the middle of the road! Along with elephants and iguanas amongst other things we saw some rare Sri Lankan small barbets, kingfishers, greyheaded fish eagle, Sri Lankan sambar deer, white bellied sea eagle and a couple of crocodiles. Fortunately no snakes!
