    Diving with Sharks

    After the nice snorkeling tour yesterday, the sea caught my attention. So, I signed up for two dives today - after an eternity without having done any dives for work and time reasons.
    At 7.30 am I've gotten picked up and after a drive of about 40mins we arrived at Muyuni Beach, where we embarked the boat. The dive equipment and everything was already set for us, so we only needed to dress properly with our dive suits. The boat ride was not too long, until we've gotten the sign to "fall over board". Together with a local Divemaster and one more guest, we've been following a very slight current. The visibility was great and it felt as we're swimming in an aquarium. The highlight however, was for sure a reefshark, which was hiding himself in a little cavern. Nevertheless, as I've been just with a shorty, I was not that sad to go back to the surface after a while 🥶. At the break on the baot, we've been served with some fruits and we enjoyed the sun to get ready for the second dive. As well this one was as spectacular as the first one and we found even a second little shark. What a beautiful day!

    When I came back to Nungwi, it was cloudy, so I took a walk along the shops (yes, I found a new strategy: looking very serious and straight ahead 😒🤣 spoiler: it helped). The paintings indeed looked very beautiful, but I resisted and remembered myself, that the walls at home are already full!).

    Later on, I had a feeling that the sunset today was not as beautiful as on the days before due to the clouds. Nevertheless, I walked around the beach and was convinced from the opposite: The only regret I had, was not having brought my camera! The perfection is in the imperfection...    En savoir plus

    Strolling around Stone TownStone Town

    Stone Town

    As well my stay in Nungwi was already over. The island however thought me another lesson in regards of patience, as my pickup came almost an hour late. Apparently, the road was blocked... Anyway, somehow he made it. The drive to Stone Town however felt as an eternity. Finally arrived there, I just dropped my luggage at the hotel and went out for a walk and for lunch.

    When I came back after a couple of hours, I found myself in a very dark room, facing the inner courtyard with not even a real terrace. So I went back to the reception, asking it that was really considered as balcony room, as I've had booked it. The receptionist started arguing with me, saying that it was the same rate as that one with balcony. What do I care about their pricing strategy and if the hotel is fully booked? Seriously, am I wrong politely asking for the service I booked and payed for? In the end, she changed my room to one on the first level, with windows, day light and a balcony. I don't really care about the room, it just makes me sad that my customer experience was getting so bad, as she was taking me completely for a fool.

    After another walk through the narrow alleys of Stone Town, ignoring again a hundred of comments from the locals, I went back to the hotel. The rooftop terrace indeed is really beautiful, offering a nice view on the sea and as well on the sunset.    En savoir plus

    Spice Farm & Prison Island

    For my last day on Zanzibar, I did a tour to the surroundings of Stone Town. Firstly, we went to a Spice Farm, where our guide showed us a huge range of spices and fruits from it's roots, the place where they grow. I can't remember all of them, but just to have an idea, what we got to see: Tumeric, ginger, claws, cinnamon, vanilla, lemongrass, cardamom, pepper, coffee fruit, durian, pineapple, mango, banana, ... And of course different things, which I cannot even remember their names 🤣 after a lunch there, we've been driving back to Stone Town, where we changed vehicles to a boat. The next point on the program was the so-called Prison Island, which is famous today for it's gigantic tortoises. Having met those giants, we returned with the boat to Stone Town, where our guide showed us some hidden corners of the Old Town. What a nice ending of my stay in Zanzibar!En savoir plus

    Doha City Tour

    Yesterday evening, I headed to the airport of Zanzibar. At midnight, the very small machine took off and flew just the few kilometres over the sea to Dar Es Salam. Yeah, it was maybe not my most brilliant idea ever, taking the cheapest flight, as my connection was just departing in the late morning after... So, let's say I had a very relaxing night at the DAR airport, playing solitaire up and down until my mobile had no power anymore 🤣. Finally a movement, the check-in desk opened, so that I could drop my luggage at least. Having past through immigration, I spent my last 10k Tanzanian Shillings (3.80 USD) for a coffee. And thaaaan, finally it was time to board the plane, next destination Doha / Katar.

    As one long layover is not enough for Dana, someone had booked the flight so that also in Doha I had about 9 hours (Yesss, really shame on me) 😬 that time however, I could spend nicely. Qatar Airways offers for about 25 USD City Tours for all passengers in transit for more than 6 hours. The tour itself took 3 hours, plus another 1.5hrs for passing the security screening and immigration. The tour itself was very basic and let's call it a prestige project of Qatar. We drove on the Corniche, the road at the seaside, passed through the financial and business district and all the prestige roads of the City. We had a short stop at the Corniche for pictures from the skyline and another at the Cultural Centre / Amphitheatre of Qatar. Last but not least, we got about half an hour to stroll around the local bazaar, the so-called Souq Waqif. Especially that place reminded me a lot about the calls we had 5 years ago with MSC Bellissima, my first ship ever. 💙 Anyway, I really enjoyed the stroll through the market. I love the smell of oriental bazaars. Same but different, always kind of the same but still at every corner a new joy for the nose. Exactly 3 hours later we arrived again at the airport. I'm ready to board this last plane for the flight back to my homebase. One thing I can promise however, Africa got my heart! As our Tour Leader Dan said, when that part of the trip found it's end: It's not a goodbye, it's a "see you later" 🌍🐘🦏🐃🦁🐆🧡    En savoir plus
