Antarctica 2024

We are cruising Antartica, visiting Ushuaia, Falkland Islands and South Georgia, a bucket list for many years. Fingers crossed we have the Drake Lake not the Drake Shake. Stayed tuned for lots of photos of the penguins, seals and hopefully whales. Read more
  • Whaling Station

    Carl Anton Larsen first identified Grytviken as an ideal location for a whaling station in 1902. Two years later he returned to establish the first station there.

    Grytviken operated from 1904-65. What is believed to be the largest blue whale ever recorded 33.8m was landed at Grytviken during the early days of whaling operations.Read more

  • Coopers Bay

    Cooper Island is a small island discovered by a British expedition under James Cook in 1775, and named after an officer aboard HMS Resolution.

  • Gold Harbour

    Gold Harbour lies on the southeast corner of South Georgia. Gold Harbour is home to around 25,000 King Penguins. We saw elephant seals, leopod seals, and various birds.

  • Fortuna Bay

    The bay is 5km long and 1.6 wide. It is named after a Norwegian Whaling expedition and home to a colony of King Penguins. It is known as the site where Shackleton and 2 of his men descended and then crossed the beach towards the Whaling station Stromness on his final leg.Read more

    Fortune was on our side this time, and what an incredible experience we had today. Walking among the king penguins and fur seals is something we will remember about South Georgia forever.

  • Stromness Harbour

    Stromness whaling station is located in the middle of the bay and was in use from 1907 to 1932 it is now derelict and home to fur seals and king penguins. It is now famous for being Shackleton's final destination in his search for help in South Georgia.Read more

    We have been at sea for 2 day's and on our way to Elephant Island. Tonight, we are now officially in the Antarctic and hope to see A23a, one of the world's largest icebergs, along the way.

    View from the cabin to A23A. This iceberg is split from the Antarctic coastline in 1986. But it swiftly grounded in the Weddell Sea, but was freed recently due to global warming becoming, essentially, an ice island. At almost 4,000 sq km (1,500 sq miles) in area, it's more than twice the size of Greater London, and another once in a lifetime item to add to our Been There did no see list.Read more

  • Elephant Island

    The island was the desolate refuge of the British explorer Ernest Shackleton and his crew in 1916 following the loss of their ship Endurance in the pack ice of the Weddell Sea. The crew of 28 reached Cape Valentine on Elephant Island after 497 days spent drifting on ice flows and a harrowing crossing of the open ocean in small lifeboats.Read more

  • Point Wild

    Point Wild is where Shackleton's Party beached after the Endurance sank in the Weddell Sea and is named after Frank Wild who was the leader of the 22 men who remained living under a lifeboat for 4 months while Shackleton and 5 of his men took the James Caird and sailed to South Georgia. Shackleton returned 137 days later and, after 4 attempts, rescued his men using a Chilean naval ship in August 1916.Read more

  • Brown Bluff

    We are now officially in Antarctica and visiting Brown Bluff, which is within the Antarctic Sound. The 725m Bluff is an exposed glacial volcano.

  • Cierva Cove

    Cierva Cove is named after Juan de la Cierva, a Spanish pilot and engineer who in the early 1920s invented the autogyro, considered by many to be the predecessor to the helicopter. Cierva Cove is a protected Antarctic area, so we could not make landings. The Cove is surrounded by glacial peaks and valleys. It is also home to Primavera, which is the Argentinean summer research station.Read more
