We will be going through jungles to hopefully see leopards, riding on a train through tea plantations, visiting a number of ruins, attending the Kandy Esala Perahera, exploring some exotic places and celebrating Carol's Birthday. Read more

    We are down the rock it took just over 1 hour and a half to climb and return including our 20 min mini break at the top waiting for sunrise.

    The climb down was a little easier than up but still difficult, my shoulder and knee are very sore and my legs feel like jelly.Read more

    We are now back at our Hotel for breakfast and a little rest before our next experience.

    So many options but I decided on the Egg Hopper which is a traditional Sri Lankan meal.

  • Bullock Ride

    Today we are doing a Village tour to a small demonstration village where the funds for the tour assists families with medical assistance and the elderly.

    Our tour started with a Bullock Ride/Drive.

  • Minneriya Tank

    Built during the golden age of the Anuradhapura Kingdom in Sri Lanka, Minneriya Wewa is one of the oldest reservoirs in Sri Lanka. Historic evidence state that it was built 276AD to 303AD and by the time it was inaugurated it is said it spanned over an expanse of 4670 acres. But over the year after its construction, the reservoir started deteriorating and most of its expanse had started to shrink. It was during 1820AD when the British saw the reservoir under ruins and subsequently decided to renovate it.Read more

  • Incredible Day

    A fabulous day we saw 3 herds of elephants a total of 50 or more. They were so close we actually had one elephant bump into our jeep basically telling the driver to move forward a little so it could walk right behind our jeep. A very special experience.Read more

  • Cocktail Time

    Tonight we decided a cocktail was required. Aqua Cooler, is our poison of choice, it has white rum, coconut liqueur, orange cordial and lime juice.

  • Dambulla Caves

    We are leaving Sigiriya and heading to Kandy via Dambulla Caves.

    Dambulla Cave Temple is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is the largest and best-preserved cave temple complex in the country, with the rock towering 160 meters over the surrounding plains. The temple complex dates back to the first century BCE and has been a significant religious center since then. It was originally constructed as a monastery by King Valagamba of Anuradhapura, who sought refuge in the caves during his exile. After regaining his throne, he transformed the caves into a magnificent rock temple as an act of gratitude. Over the centuries, the temple has been expanded and restored by various kings, adding murals, statues, and decorative artwork that remain today.Read more

    Cave of the Divine King is the first cave. A reclining Buddha stretches fourteen meters, carved directly from the living rock.     Maharaja Vihara cave 2, is the grandest sanctuary in the Dambulla complex, measuring about 52 metres contains 16 standing Buddhas, murals telling stories of the life of Buddha and a wooden statue of King Valagamba.Read more

  • Maha Alut Vihara

    The temple is the second largest in the Dambulla complex, measuring about 27 metres long and 25 metres wide and 11 metres high. It was suggested that it the functioned as storage chamber prior to its conversion into a temple. The addition of walls on the south, west, and east sides created a wedge-shaped void, which the architects filled with some fifty-seven statues.Read more

  • Paschima Viharaya

    Paschima Viharaya cave 4 believed to be the work of Valagamba of the Anuradhapura Kingdom 103 BC. However, the present paintings are largely the work of King Kirthi Sri Rajasinghe of Kandy 1747-80, who sponsored a thorough restoration of the sanctuaries. The word Paschima means western, but the name is no longer strictly accurate as another cave was subsequently added further to the west.Read more

  • Devana Alut Viharaya

    Devana Alut Viharaya cave 5 was constructed in the late 18th century or possibly later, the other being the Maha Alut Viharaya Cave No. 3. The temple's name means the "Second New Temple." According to Anuradha Seneviratna, the shelter was originally a storehouse, but its murals were apparently repainted in 1915.Read more
