    Dinner at the Hotel tonight after a big day with elephants. Packing was also necessary as we start early in the morning and drive to Chiang Rai.

    Goodbye Chiang Mai

    Leaving today and going to Chiang Rai to visit more temples and The Golden Triangle. The drive is about 4 hours. It is a little wet this morning so just as well we are moving to the next town.

    White Temple

    After 2.5 hour drive north, we arrived at our first attraction for the day. On arrival it is an incredible sight. The White Temple is so ornate it was actually hard to take it all in it is so intricate with beautiful and scary/creepy sculptures everywhere.

    White Temple is regarded as one of the most beautiful temples built in this century. A masterpiece of artist Chaloemchai Khositphiphat, famed for his extravagant and unique Buddhism related paintings, the temple reflects the artist’s grand visions of heaven, hell and Nirvana. The main assembly hall and adjacent area are carved in white with glass mosaics. The walls have been painted with a depiction of heaven and hell.    Read more

    Cycle of Rebirth

    The bridge of “the cycle of rebirth”
    The ubosot, the main building of the white temple, is reached by crossing a bridge over a small lake. In front of the bridge is a circular area with hundreds of reaching hands that symbolize desire. This area represents human suffering and hell.Read more

    Gate of Heaven

    The bridge towards the assembly hall, called the bridge of “the cycle of rebirth” signifies the crossing over from the cycle of death and rebirth into a state free of suffering. It symbolizes the way to happiness by overcoming worldly things as temptations, greed and desire.Read more

    The Ordination Hall

    The most important building of the temple, the ubosot or ordination hall is an all white building with fragments of reflective glass in the plaster. The very ornate ubosot shows some design elements of classic Northern Thai temples like the three tiered roof and stylized Naga serpents on the barge boards.

    Whereas the murals of many old temples depict scenes from Buddhist stories, the walls of the white temple contain colorful murals that depict modern representations of good and evil, contemporary figures like Batman, Spiderman and Elvis, villains and superheroes from movies and comics and even spaceships.

    On the back wall of the ubosot is a golden mural of the Buddha, a few images of the Buddha in front of it.

    Walk and Dinner

    Walked to the smallest markets, it was wet, maybe that is why, no street food either. Decided the Cafe we went to for afternoon tea was also our dinner choice.

    Tea Plantation

    A tea plantation and tea tasting was our first stop.

    Thawee Wanaspitaksakul, planted his first plantation at Doi Payapai Mae Fah Luang in 1977, envisioning a tea that would impress customers from every corner of the world. He relentlessly pursued perfection through the use of time honored methods, continually improving expertise and, above all, studying and understanding the local soil and climate.Read more

    Golden Triangle

    Our first stop is The Golden Triangle lookout where we view where the countries of Thailand, Myanmar and Laos converge:

    “Triangle” for being the meeting point of three countries.
    “Gold” because this precious metal was the payment system used by the first opium traders.

    The cultivation of opium in this region is not an ancestral activity, since it was not until the end of the 19th century when the tribal populations that grew opium migrated from southern China to the highlands of Southeast Asia.

    In the early 1940’s the Golden Triangle of Thailand, Myanmar and Laos produced a modest amount of opium, but the suppression of opium crops in China and later Iran in 1955 brought the bulk of the world’s opium production to move to this mountainous region of Southeast Asia.    Read more

    Wat Phrathat

    We then visited Wat Phrathat which is a small temple and one of the oldest in this Chiang Rai Province. The carvings on the teak doors tell the story of Budha. From the temple you can see the border of Laos and Myanmar.Read more

    To access this area you can walk up the many steps or drive, we drove. Serpents guard the entrance of the walkway to this Budha and angel idols are around once you have reached the top.

    Sop Ruak

    Sop Ruak the crossroads of three countries, the centre of Thailand’s Golden Triangle. Sop Ruak, a small Thai town located right at the point where the Ruak River merges into the Mekong, forming the natural borders that delimit Thailand, Myanmar and Laos.

     The riverside area has Buddhist temples, altars and statues, and a huge golden Buddha especially stands out, crowning a temple on a large structure in the shape of a boat.    Read more

    House of Opium

    The House of Opium is a small private museum established by Mrs. Phatcharee Srimathayakun who was born in Chiang Saen District. After graduating from the Faculty of Education, Chulalongkorn University and living in Bangkok and Chiang Mai, she returned to her birthplace in order to open an antique shop and a small guest house in 1987. She was interested in local history. She began collecting artistic objects and studying the opium trade in the Golden Triangle by reading books on opium, documents provided by Thailand’s Narcotics Control Board, and university studies. She lived with tribal people from the Hill tribe, Shan, Lu, Burmese and Lao who migrated to the village and nearby areas. She saw that their antiques were historical, artistic and culturally valuable. She knew that if these antiques are not preserved, they may be all bought and dispersed by foreign collectors. Therefore, in 1989, she opened House of Opium museum to display opium artifacts and combine the interesting stories of opium in the Golden Triangle .The museum has over 2000 antiques that had been collected for almost 30 years.Read more
