Mexico City 2 - walking day

Aufgewacht bin ich mit laufender Nase und weiterhin merkwürdigen Kopfschmerzen. Es war kalt in der Nacht, aber die Decke im Bett ist eigentlich ganz kuschelig. Krieg ich schon wieder ne Erkältung? Ist die aus Campeche noch nicht auskuriert gewesen? Menno. Ich ignorier das mal und lutsche Bonbons und werfe mir ab und zu ne Ibu ein.
Mit meiner Bettnachbarin Mireille aus Quebec gehe ich heute durch den Tag. Um 13h gehen wir Richtung Colonia Centro. Viel los hier. Wir schlendern unserer Free Walking Tour (gratis Stadtteilführung) entgegen, die um 15h beginnt.
Der Guide führt uns durch Roma - einer der beliebtesten Stadtteile in der City.
Die Architektur ist französisch, englisch, italienisch, weil dieser Stadtteil immer von europäischer Kultur und Europäern geprägt wurde. Wir hören Geschichten über die Entstehung der Stadt. Zuerst Zentrum der Azteken, dann von Hernan Cortes und dem Franziskanern kolonalisiert und missioniert.
Ursprünglich war hier ein riesiger See, den die Spanier versucht haben trocken zu legen und ein Großteil der Gebäude steht auf ehemaligen Sümpfen und auf Hohlräume, wo mal Wasser war. Jedes Jahr sinken die Gebäude ein paar cm tiefer. Viele Gebäude sind schief und einige Erdbeben haben für einige Einstürze gesorgt.
Die Straßen gehen wie Wellen auf und ab, wegen des ehemaligen Sumpflandes.
Alles ganz schön schräg im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes.
Kulturell und politisch Ausgangsort für viele Bewegungen und Musik. Pink Diplomacy gab vielen Flüchtlingen ihrer Zeit die Chance hier neu anzufangen. Alles sehr interessant.

Die Tour ist um 18h zu Ende und wir sind ca. 55 Gehminuten vom Hostel entfernt. Wir probieren mal den Metrobus, denn mittlerweile sind wir seid 5h zu Fuß unterwegs. Der Metrobus ist voll. So stelle ich mir die Metro in Japan vor. Der Verkehr ist total crazy.
Endlich wieder im Hostel. Gerade recht, denn es wird schon wieder kalt, sobald die Sonne verschwindet.

Letzte Aktion: streetfood essen. So lecker.

I woke up with a runny nose and still had a weird headache. It was cold at night, but the covers on the bed are actually quite cozy. Am I getting a cold again? Hasn't the one from Campeche disappeared yet? Damned. I decide to ignore it and suck candy and throw myself an Ibu every now and then.
Today I go through the day with my bedmate Mireille from Quebec. At 1 p.m. we go towards Colonia Centro. Lots going on here. We stroll towards our Free Walking Tour (free guided tour of the district), which starts at 3 p.m.
The guide takes us through Roma - one of the most popular parts of the city.
The architecture is French, English, Italian because this part of the city has always been shaped by European culture and Europeans. We hear stories about the origins of the city. First center of the Aztecs, then colonized and missionized by Hernan Cortes and the Franciscans.
Originally there was a huge lake that the Spaniards tried to drain and most of the buildings stand on former swamps and cavities where water used to be. Every year the buildings sink a few centimeters lower. Many buildings are crooked and some earthquakes have caused some collapses.
The streets go up and down like waves because of the former marshland.
Everything is pretty out of line in the truest sense of the word.
Culturally and politically the starting point for many movements and music. Pink Diplomacy gave many refugees of their time the chance to start anew here. All very interesting.

The tour finishes at 6pm and we are about a 55 minute walk from the hostel. We'll try the Metrobus, because now we've been walking for 5 hours. The metro bus is full. This is how I imagine the metro in Japan to be. The traffic is totally crazy.
Finally back in the hostel. Just right, because it gets cold again as soon as the sun disappears.
