  • Manchester here we come!

    15 oktober 2024, Frankrijk ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

This morning, we left our cruise ship and said our final goodbyes to our travel companions.

We fly from Basel to Manchester with a stop over in Heathrow. Bruce and Tammi are en route to Manchester. Bryce and Chenaya are already there. We'll meet up in the airport and then get our rental car and drive to Whitehaven.

We just make our connection at Heathrow due to time delays. We are very greatful. We meet up in the Rental Car area with the family. After unpacking a big box and stuffing as much luggage into the back of the SUV as we can, with carryon and backpacks on knees, we head off to Whitehaven.

It was quite the 3 hour drive! We stop part way for dinner at a pub near Lancaster. We're in an area of stone walled houses and barns and fences. It's very picturesque

The roads are challenging at times. My copilot is anxious. We slowly make our way to the Air B&B. The roads are narrow, dark and twisting. They don't seem suitable for the posted speed of 70 mph. From time to time, I pull over to let the locals fly by me. There's road construction, and we are held up for about 20 minutes when we are only 26 miles from our destination. No one is complaining tho!

After driving past once, even using the GPS, Tammi helps us to navigate to the correct spot. It's very dark and hard to see. With Bruce's "torch" (he's gone English on me!), we find the key in the lockbox in the dark and get settled in.

The house is quaint and roomy. It was originally an old farmhouse built in the 16th century. We make a cuppa with the Cumbrian tea that is provided.

Hopefully, after a good night's sleep, those who were crammed in the car will get the kinks worked. Poor Bryce had to twist like a pretzel to get into the back of the car. Even tho pregnant, Chenaya is managing remarkably well. No one's complaining!

Even with little sleep for 36 hours, Bruce and Tammi are doing great. Chenaya is holding up well, and Bryce is a trooper.

We all survived my driving! I'm greatful!

Saint Bees and Whitehaven Day 1

    16–17 okt. 2024, Engeland ⋅ 🌧 15 °C

John and I are up around 6:30, as we're well adjusted to the time change. When it starts to get lighter, we see the gardens and old buildings surrounding High House Cottage. There is a bit of a breeze, and there has been rain overnight, but it seems fairly warm.

Once everyone is ready, we head to a local restaurant in St Bees, which overlooks the beach. St Bees is a quaint little village that has been in existence for thousands of years. The area is very picturesque.

We then head over to Whitehaven to check out some local stores and go to Tesco for groceries.

We go for a walk around the harbour, which at one time was a very busy fishing port. There was also a coal mine here. Very old buildings are interspersed with more modern ones. A nice small town vibe here, where there are around 30,000 residents. We go to a coffee shop to buy ground beans and a few baked items.

While shopping, we ran into Jonny buying groceries for his Mum and Dad, who arrived from Italy late last night. What a great surprise! We're looking forward to seeing Regan later tonight. She's in Edinburough with Marrissa, her friend from Cache Creek, and picking up Stephen, who went to Van Arts with Regan and arrived in Edinburough from the US.

We plan to eat in tonight and have plans for a roast chicken dinner. We seem quite happy to sit around the cottage and read or play games. Regan will be coming over here later tonight, and we're all looking forward to seeing her!

  • Whitehaven and Saint Bees Day 2

    17 oktober 2024, Engeland ⋅ 🌬 14 °C

This morning we woke up to the family together. We had a lovely breakfast and spent quality time with Regan.

After breakfast, we all headed to Whitehaven to go shopping. John stayed back, interested in going for a walk.

We had fun in a lovely department store. Some bought clothes for this evening.

After shopping, Regan showed us around the downtown area. We came upon the Museum of Rum and decided to have a look.

The Museum is very well set up, and gives a history of the British colonization of Antigua, the brutalities of the slave trade, and the production of rum. The Jameson family, from Whitehaven, were major importers of rum to England.

We had a great bowl of soup at the restaurant in the building then picked up a few groceries and dropped Regan off at the house.

We had time back at the cottage for a brief rest prior to going to the family only event at the Howling Wolf, where Regan and Jonny said their wedding vows to one another. We all entered into a time of prayer for Regan and Jonny's marriage and the upcoming wedding celebration on Saturday.

It was lovely to be able to spend time chatting with Jonny's family, as well as the Pastor and his wife from their church, and a couple who are very close friends of Jonny and Regan from the church.

We returned to the cottage and had a light dinner, and continued to spend time visiting with Regan.

  • Rehearsal Day

    18–19 okt. 2024, Engeland ⋅ 🌬 13 °C

We had a relaxing morning chatting with Regan and the rest of the family over breakfast.

We leave at 1100 to get the keys to the church. I drop everyone but Regan at the church, then the two of us drive up to Jonny's to load up the car with what is needed to decorate the hall for the reception.

Jonny and Regan have done an enormous amount of work planning and purchasing and borrowing items to set up the church hall for the dinner.

Many hands arrived to help out. The reception room was beautifully transformed!

We go back to the cottage for a salmon supper. Regan last supper as a Greenwood!

    Wedding Day!

    19 oktober 2024, Engeland ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

This morning, Tammi and I drive Regan to her hair appointment at 0900.

The hair is stunning. We then drive Regan to Jonny's and help her get into her dress. They are meeting a photographer at Wastwater at 1;00 for pictures.

We arrive at the church at 3:30 for the 4:00 service. Already lots of people around, taking charge of parking and preparations for the wedding. It is so obvious that Regan and Jonny are greatly loved.

The service is beautiful and a testament to Regan and Jonny's faith. Following the service, there is a reception for those not attending the dinner.

Dinner begins at 6:30 and Regan and Jonny have arranged a food truck which offers hamburgers, pulled pork, sausages, potatoes and salad. A very unique meal! The weather has been awesome all day with sunshine and no wind.

We indulge in beautiful cake for dessert. Speeches and games follow, and then the dancing starts. The Hudson family are up doing the macarena and other group dances, joined by members from Regan and Jonny's church.

I drive the getaway car and transport the newly weds to their home. A wonderful day full of joy and many memories.

  • Trip to Carlisle

    20 oktober 2024, Engeland ⋅ 🌧 14 °C

This morning, we get up early and drive Chenaya and Bryce to catch a train for Manchester. They will go from there to Heathrow and then fly home tomorrow.

Tammi, Bruce,John, and I got to the Carlisle cathedral where we attended a choral Eucharest. The pipe organ and choir sounded spectacular in the cathedral. It was great to go through the Church of England Eucherist service.

After the service, we explored the cathedral more and learned about the early Christian history of this area. They have many priceless artifacts from centuries ago on display.

The area was inhabited by the Romans around the same time as the Apostle Paul died. There is some evidence of Christian belief found among the artifacts from that time. Haidrians wall runs just north of Carlisle.

Much of the early settlements were lost to Viking raids in the 700s.

After our tour, we had lunch in the Cathedral Cafe and planned our return trop to Saint Bees.

We return via a different route which takes us through the Western Lakes District. There are mountains (small) and lakes in this area. Very picturesque and obviously a popular place for hiking.

We pick up lamb for dinner tonight and head back to the cottage for some rest, and a quiet night after all of the excitement ad activities of the previous days.

    Last Day in Whitehaven

    21 oktober 2024, Engeland ⋅ 🌬 12 °C

There was a really strong wind last night. Gusts over 70 mph, apparently. Glad we were in the Cottage with no need to go anywhere. Miraculously, there were no power failures that affected us.

A bright morning, still with strong winds. The tide was out, so we went to Saint Bees for a walk on the beach.

We go to Regan and Jonny's and take some gifts. After that we had a lovely lunch at the Ploughman restaurant.

Back to the house, and we go for a walk in their neighborhood. It is a lovely area with outstanding views of the ocean and Whitehaven.

Back to the cottage to get organized for an early departure tomorrow.

Regan sent us a few pictures from. The photographer. A wonderful surprise! These pictures were taken at Wast Water lake.
