    The Viking Polaris is passing through the Welland Locks, part of the St. Lawrence Seaway. I remember as a child seeing President Eisenhower and Prime Minister Diefenbaker meeting here to open the seaway officially. Before its construction small ships could traverse the Great Lakes, but there was no way for large ocean vessels to access such inland ports as Detroit or Duluth. Since the creation of this elaborate system of lakes, rivers, canals and locks, however, a ship can travel all the way from the Atlantic Ocean to the western shores of Lake Superior.
