Day 1 Mt Cook to Twizel

    January 6 in New Zealand ⋅ 🌙 7 °C

After being shuttled up to Mt Cook by our lovely driver Tania from Cycle Journeys we biked from the carpark to the Helipad. From there we were choppered over the Tasman river to the Rotten Tommey start point. It was a stunning day with amazing views of Mt Cook & the Pukaki Lake all the way.Read more

  • Day 2

    January 7 in New Zealand ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

We had a leisurely start to the day after brunch in Twizel at the lovely Mint cafe. We headed off to the Ohau canals following these for a while. After a snack stop at the edge of the lake we continued on an off-road track, across the Ohau weir & on to Lake Ohau village. The lodge where we stayed was a few kms on from the village. What a stunning location. After a relaxing afternoon we had a lovely 3 course dinner - very retro vibes but in a good way!Read more

  • Day 3 Lake Ohau to Omarama

    January 8 in New Zealand ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

We left Ohau Lodge to tackle the steepest part of our trip, heading along the Ohau ranges. It was a gradual climb to the top at 900m but much easier than we expected. We then headed down and joined the road just after our lunch stop at the historic woolshed which is no longer there. Some of us took the 8km diversion to the Clay Cliffs which was well worth it apart from the dust from passing cars. We arrived in Omarama mid afternoon in time for our late afternoon hot tub soak. Followed this with dinner at the Omarama pub. Another great dayRead more

  • Day 4 Omarama to Kurow

    January 9 in New Zealand ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

We had breakfast at the woolly ram cafe then headed off towards Lake Benmore. After going through the Sailors cutting campground we joined the trail on private land going around the edge of the lake. This was my most favourite part of the ride, a really good track & stunning views like usual. We ended up at the Benmore Dam, crossed this & had lunch & a swim on the other side in Lake Aviemore. Best part of the ride, to the worst, unfortunately we had a head wind all the way to Aviemore Dam & it was a boring sealed road all the way. Very pleased to reach the dam & the last part to Waitaki dam & on to Kurow was a better off road track but still very windy. After a recovery drink in the top pub in Kurow we biked on to our accommodation in a lovely converted woolshed a few kms out of Kurow. We were taken back to the pub for dinner - another retro experience but lovely southern hospitality once again.Read more

  • Day 5 Kurow to Duntroon

    January 10 in New Zealand ⋅ 🌬 22 °C

Today is a short day so some of us filled in the morning with a round of golf on the Kurow golf course. Anna & Aidan joined us too. We headed off after lunch, with Anna biking the next two days with us. We stopped for a wine tasting at River T wines. Then followed the trail along the river to Duntroon. We stayed at the Duntroon hotel, very nice accommodation & a lovely pub dinner once again.Read more

  • Day 6 Duntroon to Oamaru

    January 11 in New Zealand ⋅ 🌬 22 °C

We started the day expecting our first rain for the week, but it didn't come too much luckily. Our first stop was the elephant rocks for a quick look around & then the trail heads through farm land which was a change from lakes. We headed through the Rakis tunnel & then on to the Enfield tavern for lunch. No rain but a very strong wind behind us all the way today. After a leisurely lunch we biked the last 30mins to the Oamaru harbour. Had a celebratory drink at the brewery. Such an amazing 6 days with a great bunch of people.Read more
