  • Finaly arrived

    August 15, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 12 °C

Today I did 35 Km in 7h (breaks incl.)! A few kilometers were next to a canal and at the end the canal fell down 30-40m- and I had to cross this reservoir bank (Staustufe) via a very small bridge! A bit scary if you are afraid of hights like me. Puh- my feed were burning but it worked out! It was actually the longest stage I did so far!
Tomorrow there is a monster step of 18 through the Meseta with nothing (no village, no water), that‘s why everybody tries to get here- I might start early again and see how far I get afterwards! Tomorrow I will also pass the midpoint of the whole Camino, so I get closer and closer to Santiago and also ultimately to my family! 😘😍🥰

  • 17 km without a single house

    August 16, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

The stage of today is very much feared by many people as the first 17 Km there is no house! I got up at 5, started at 5.30 without breakfast and arrived before 9! It’s chilly (13C) and a bit windy so perfect walking weather! I met people and did a lecture in Schleswig’s history (from the ancient Hügelgräber to the vikings and king Abel till the Battle of Hemmingstedt). That way it was easier! Maybe I can do all the way to Sahagun, wich is another 22 KMs! May feets are aching - but I might do proper breaks! No I enjoy my well deserved breakfast with Tortilla, Cafe con leche grande and zumo de naranja! Guten Morgen!Read more

  • Bei den Templern

    August 16, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

After 27 Km I arrived in Terradillos de los Templarios, which means „little fields of the temple knights“! But it’s a very tiny village, it’s early and my feet say „move on“!! So another 12 Km to Sahagun is the goal for today!Read more

  • Sahagun

    August 16, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

After 40 km I arrived in Sahagun and get a clean bed with a real sheet and cupboards and a nice shower! Pilgrim heart, what else can you think of! Today there was a nice wind and it wasn’t hot - so quite ideal! I followed a nice smell (no, not my own shirt 🫣😷) and met people from France and Ecuador who I met before, so we went the last 7 km together! 54 km from Leon now- puhRead more

  • First stop today after 9 km

    August 17, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

It’s windy and colder , 15C! Yesterday everybody had to bring something for dinner and we had a shared meal buffet style! It was great! So many different things! I made Baguette a la Neuberend! 💋

  • Leon

    August 18, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 9 °C

Today was only 22 km bit it felt very long! It was very cold at the beginning (8C) and the way was mostly boring! Leon is interesting - will explore it after the shower and a nap! I got a blister today- so need to take care of it, too 😷Read more

  • What an evening

    August 18, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 14 °C

Actually I was sitting alone in the only bistro in Reliegos! The Tomato with goatcheese was really good, the Lasagna, as well (by why are all Lasagna portions in the world small) and the beer was cold! I was ready to go back to the hostel for an early sleep! I asked the universe for a little more excitement next time! 5 minutes later Charles wales in- the guy I met the last 2 days before! We had a 🍷 (actually 🍷🍷🍷) , shared a bowl of Morcilla (it’s made of blood, rice and onions), had a good conversations about South America, where he lived for 3 years), about Salsa dance 🕺 (a guy from Colombia joined) and at 9 the bistro closed! On the way back to the hostels there was a weird place (see the pictures) that was part of the movie „The way“! We decided to have a last beer there but it showed up as one of the weirdest bars I have ever seen! The very mad barkeeper showed us pictures of him in the French legion and gave us his special beer (11% Alc.) and a Gin Tonic that deserved it’s name! All of the sudden a guy from Italy, from Albania and Ecuador joined (whom I all met before in Saint Nicolas, the church with no light)! It turned out that the crazy barkeeper with just a few teeth is one of the best chess players I have ever seen! We played a few games with him… olala! The host of the municipal Albergue also joined and asked me where I staid! He said the host of my Albergue is an evil man and I should rather move to his Albergue! So I got to my room (the only other guest was a ugly smelling guy), grabbed my stuff and moved (the only bed left was the „reserve“ in a huge side room- anyway‘ thank god, I have Aspirin! Weird evening!Read more

  • Adios Leon

    August 18, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

I really like to be in a city but I don’t enjoy walking in the cities. Leon is very nice, full of tapas you get for free with every drink- so different from the Pinxchos you get in Navarra and Castillia! The Cathedrale is stunning and my sleep was very good! Time to get the day started with a quick breakfast at the Main Station!Read more

  • Take the long way…

    August 19, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 12 °C

After the first 7 km today pilgrims need to decide between 2 variants: route A is 3.4 km shorter but constantly next to the highway! Route B is nicer but longer! Let’s see! A friend sent me „It’s Friday again“ and I also listened to „You take me up“ from
Scotch- love it! Today I walk alone- just saw a Portuguese guy that I met yesterday evening! He recommended my next stop in 20 km! I changed shoes because of the blister (Blase) and so far it works! I met Germans on the Camino who always complain! I learned here that you need to accept certain situations and do something with it (mach was draus)! Or you simply change it! But staying in a given situation and not changing anything but complaining is NOT a healthy option!
Ps: if you have a song you recommend for walking, please send it!

  • Hospital de Orbigo

    August 19, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

The longer option wasn’t as nice as I thought- several tines I walked just straight and alone for 2-3 h with no house at all! Puhh- just saw a group of 4 Germans who gave up 2 villages earlier, as it was so hot today! But after 36 Km and 7.5 h I arrived in Hospital de Orbigo, which is really nice! A lot of nice Albergues- I chose one where Pilgrims can paint for free! The amazing results are attached!Read more

  • My way to Astorga

    August 20, 2022 in Spain ⋅ 🌙 11 °C

Sorry to my English followers but , today I will write in German for a reason! (unser Lied)Read more

  • In Leon‘s mountains

    August 20, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

I left Astorga behind finished after 30 Km! In El Ganzo now. From tomorrow on it’s mountain climbing again- up to 1500+meters! Not sure how much I will be able to do per day then! Maybe listen to Hape Kerkelings book and see how he described it…🤦🏼Read more

  • Mountains - 1600m high

    August 20, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

The way up to the famous Cruz Ferro, where people leave a stone the brought from their homes, was ok! 17 km, the first 8 in complete darkness! At the Cruz a met an American woman who was from Key West- where we were before the pandamic! The only way is up from Otis Clay brought me safely to the top! I am at the highest point now and it’s going down from now on! Need to be careful as the path is very narrow and rocky!Read more

  • El Acebo

    August 21, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

The very steep downhill caused another blister (damn) so i stopped after 25 km in El Acebo where I got a nice and cheap private room! As a nice surprise I can use a pool, as well! So I rest! Tomorrow I will start with 2-3 downhill again but for today: Es könnte mir schlechter gehen!Read more

  • Gracias, El Acebo, buenas dias Ponferada

    August 22, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

I started just with the daylight today! It has really been the steepest and mot dangerous part of the whole Camino! For 2 1/2 hours I climbed down the mountains on slippery clay, rocks and stoned! 100% concentration was necessary not to fall down the steep hillside! As a reward I now enjoy a real „Latte Macchiato“ in front of THE castle of the temple knights! There we a mix of knights and monks between the 12th and 14th century and were also the protectors of the pilgrims! Wait for the stunning picture to cone …😇Read more

  • Closed

    August 22, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

  • Ab ins Bierzo

    August 22, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Today it is really hot (37 C, no wind) - 1-2 hours to go but I need to change my shoes! However the landscape is quite nice- but why are all Spanish people always yelling in bars! 😳

  • Early morning wake up

    August 23, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

Due to the expected hot weather I started at 5.30 am - 2 h through the mountains in the dark- you hear every little sound in the bushes, I can tell you! 15 more km up and down and then the „Camino duro“ starts- the hart way! 10 km of only uphill climbing! O Cebrero is waitingRead more

  • Camino duro

    August 23, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

30 Km an der Hauptstrasse entlang war anstrengend- aber so rein gar nichts gegen diesen Aufstieg! Boah! Pause in la Falda! Read more

  • O Cebreiro auf über 1300m geschafft

    August 23, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

The mega Uphill etappe is done- I was rewarded with a nice room and shower! After it I couldn’t move and slept on the bed while „watching“ „Agent K 9“ with James Belushi! Now my ugly smelling clothes wash and then I will learn Spanish and enjoy a nice dinner! I burned 5500 calories today! 😎Read more

  • Triacastilla

    August 24, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

22 Km downhill in 3.45h- I think I will continue for 10-20 more Kilometers! Maybe I can walk away from the thunderstorm that is expected! The mountains are behind me and I am entering the very different, very green area of Gallicia now! It looks like Schleswig in May now!!So far it looks nice! I got used to the annoying bile „pilgrims“ who are riding fast on „our“ Camino! But now hundreds of hobby pilgrims are joining- no backpack, like a German „Kegelbruder- Verein! Rooms/beds are getting less available because of that… I would like to ban them 😜Read more

  • Jesus in Wales?

    August 24, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

Hab hier tatsächlich Jesus getroffen und ihm Shampoo geliehenRead more

  • Touri-Grinos and Acrophobia

    August 25, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

For tactical reasons I can only do 23 km today, so the target is Portomarin! However, today is different- it’s colder and wet- and the Touri- Grinos entered the Camino! People with no or just a small backpack walking through the landscape, pre-booking the Albergues! So it looks like „Bundesjugendspiele“! I walked with few „real“ pilgrims and we are all shocked! Just before Portomarin there is a 70m high bridge with a 150 cm balustrade…everybody who knows me, knows about my panic of hights (acrophobia)! But I saw no Alternative, not even a bus! So I walked fast in the middle of the street, hoping no cars are coming- on top of it there was a strong wind- did I already mention: I hate bridges! But I made it! 🤦🏼😵‍💫 🥴🙀🥇
Afterwards I found out, that there is a very shallow old roman bridge, too 🤦🏼🤦🏼🤦🏼🤦🏼
