  • I 🩷 Kobe beef!

    Symeon and Paul went to a Ninja training experience and I chose to stay in the hotel do some packing and then go out for lunch.

    I picked a restaurant near the hotel we stay and it is specialized for making Kobe beef cuisine, named “I 🩷 Kobe beef”.

    I ordered a set with beef sushi, salad a steak and a beef ramen. The beef was very tender and delicious.

    At night time after shopping (both Paul and I ate already, but Symeon was not), I took him back to the restaurant again. He ordered, a set with salad and sushi, a top grade steak with rice. There was a stove for heating up the beef. It was so juicy and tender. Symeon loved it a lot! The owner of the restaurant was very happy that I took my son back the same day and visit his restaurant!

  • Sumida Aquarium by Symeon

    I went to the aquarium by myself when my parents went shopping at the Skytree. There was a jellyfish exhibit at the start of the aquarium.

    After the jellyfish exhibit, there was a giant penguin enclosure in the middle of the aquarium.

    Right next to the penguins, there was a sea lion enclosure.

    There were many tanks full of goldfish in the aquarium as well,

    There was also a giant tank with a sand tiger shark and a stingray.

    There was a cafe with sealife-themed food.

    After that, there was a gift shop, all of the items in the shop were all very high in quality.

    I was happy and satisfied. I felt the freedom of visiting places by myself!

  • Unexpected date night

    It was a rainy day, so we went to the Skytree shopping center nearby the hotel we stay. After some shopping, Symeon wanted to visit the Sumida aquarium in the shopping mall (we visited this mall 5 years ago).

    As he was visiting the aquarium, Paul and I went for dinner and dessert. Sometimes it is nice to go out without the kid!

  • Late night shopping at DonKi

    There is a famous drugstore in Japan named DonKi in Japan. There is a 4-storey DonKi nearby our hotel that opens 24 hours.

    After late dinner with Symeon we decided to do some shopping at mid-night. I was surprise that the store was so busy even at mid-night. I was glad to have Symeon helping me lineup at the checkout while I was picking the stuff. Thank you, my dear!Leer más

  • Sushi lunch at Tokyo Station

    Because we are going to take a train the next day, we decided to move to an apartment near Tokyo station. Since the apartment is not ready yet, we decided to do some shopping at Tokyo Station.

    We had lunch in a sushi restaurant. We ordered our food through the screen in front of us then the sushi chef would make the sushi at scene and bring it to our plate. The sushi was delicious and we loved the experience too.

    We then bought some gift from Tokyo Station and tasted the first made Calbee chips. Then we went back to the apartment to rest.

  • Hotel MONday Apart Premium NIHONBASHI

    The reason I book this hotel/apartment because it is closer to the Tokyo Station (we are going to take a train the day after) and there is a washing machine in the room.

    Symeon enjoys staying in the apartment and he stays there by himself for dinner (we bought him a bento box from Tokyo Station). However, we are not familiar with using the washing machine. The first load of cloth was ok. The second load of clothes didn’t dry very well even overnight. We have to carry some damp clothes with us!

    It is convenience to have a kitchen in room. We eat more strawberries in the apartment!

  • All you can eat crab at Crab Paradise

    Because Symeon is a sea animal lover, he didn’t like to eat seafood. Daddy and I decided to go to Tsukji (a famous seafood market in Tokyo) for all you can eat crab dinner.

    There were king crab, snowy crab and hairy crab. We could eat it hot, cold or tempura (deep fried). We could also have crab miso soup and crab sushi. However, we only had an hour to eat. Therefore, we concentrated to eat crab and took less photo. The food was delicious and we were happy!Leer más

  • Mitsui Garden Hotel in Yokohama

    We took the JR train to go to Yokohama. It only took 23 mins to get there. We quickly finished our bento box we bought from Tokyo Station, then we already arrived Yokohama.

    We were staying in the Mitsui Garden hotel Yokohama tonight. We booked this hotel because they are willing to receive our luggage and stuff we bought on our way by mail and luggage transfer. We sent some of our luggage here since our first stop in Kansai airport.

    The service here was very good. They let us check in early without any additional cost. We had no problem receiving all our luggage and purchase as well. They delivered everything to our room and refused to take any gratuity. We love the service in Japan!

  • Chinatown Yokohama

    Chinatown Yokohama is the oldest Chinatown in Japan. The earliest Chinese had great influence to trading in Japan and they had a significant role in Japanese history.

    We checked out from the hotel we stayed, dropped off our luggage at the cruise terminal, then we took the tourist bus to Chinatown Yokohama.

    Chinatown Yokohama is a famous tourist spot and many people on the tourist bus got off at the same station.

    We arrived Chinatown and we saw a number of Chinese Style building and we tried some Chinese Street food too. They were delicious and it is a fun visit!

  • Getting Onboard Westerdam

    After visiting Chinatown, we went back to Yokohama Station. We went to the Takashiyama department store and had a Japanese style Western lunch at the top floor. We cruise around the department store, then go to the bakery “Echire” to go some treat to eat on our cruise. (We bought some treats in Echire Tokyo and we really like it!)

    We then took a taxi to the pier, browsed around, then we checked-in into our “home” for the next 16 days: the Westerdam.

    We are taking this cruise from Yokohama, Japan to Seattle, US. We will stop by 2 cities in Hokkaido, 3 cities in Alaska as well as Victoria, BC. We will also take 5 days (6 days) to cross the Pacific Ocean.

    We are lucky to have a stateroom in the midship with a balcony. Symeon will sleep on a bed which can be open at night and close as a sofa in the daytime. It is a closey little home for us for the next 16 days.

    After we organized to unpack our luggage, we got directed to the spa by mistake. Both Paul and I purchased to use the thermal suite during our journey. It includes the use of the thermal pool, thermal bed, steam room and the bathroom in the spa. It became our favour spot to hangout during our cruise. I also won the lucky draw of USD $100 to spend at the spa. I feel lucky.

    We finally decided to go to the buffet for dinner on our disbarkment night. Nice and easy!

    After dinner, both Paul and I went to the spa for the use of our thermal suite. Symeon picked a nice table. He sat there and watch our boat leaving Yokohama! We are glad that he enjoys the cruise himself!

  • Sea Life

    The cruise we are taking this time is the Westerdam by the Holland America Cruise Line. It is a ship from Yokohama, Japan, through Hokkaido and Alaska, to Seattle, USA. It is a 16-night cruise and it consist of 8/9 sea days.

    There are around 2000 passengers onboard and many of them are elderly. Our daily schedule is different than most of the people. We wake up late and sleep late. So most of the time the ship is not busy for us. Also, Paul paid an upgrade to Club Orange, so we got priority for most of the activities.

    In most of the sea day, we wake up at 11am to noon, hear the daily announcement from the captain in our cabin. Then we get ready to go out for lunch. We eat either at the Main dining room or the Lido Market (buffet). After lunch, we will join some activities on the cruise: lecture, origami folding, wine tasting, afternoon tea, pedi-mani and more. We sometimes have afternoon snack at Dive-In for burgers and tacos.

    Paul and I love to go to the spa. He loves to go to the thermal pool and I love to relax on the thermal chair.

    We decide where to go for dinner according to the menu (Main dinning room, Lido Market, Pinnacle Grill or Canaletto).

    After dinner, Symeon will go to Deck 10 to play board game with new friends. Paul loves to walk around the ship. I will go to the spa again (it is mostly empty, only myself using the spa room). I will also take shower at the spa changing room too.

    We will meet up at the buffet from 10:30 to 11:30 for a snack or drink. We will talk about what we did that day and the plan for the next day. Then we will go back to our cabin the watch movie or TV. That’s our typical day at sea!

  • A day at Muroran

    The first port of our cruise was Muroran, Hokkaido. I originally planed to go to the Hell Valley in Noboribetsu. However, the excursion was sold out. Therefore, we decided to hangout near the port.

    First, we paid to get onto a tour bus, but we regretted after the bus started. The bus was very crowded and the location the bus is going to has way less attraction than the original point. We therefore took a taxi to go to the aquarium right across where we got off from our boat.

    After arrived the aquarium, we discovered that it was a small aquarium for small children. There were many local kids because it was a national holiday for Japan and people got a week off that week.

    We were all hungry after getting into the aquarium. We found a small restaurant selling barbecue seafood and pork skewers. We ordered some and they were all delicious!

    After visiting the museum, we walked by the seashore. We first saw an onsen (hot spring) facility, but it was not open yet. Then we went to the Tourist information centre. There were a gift shop selling local product and souvenir, a food court selling local food, an observation tower as well as exhibition about the development of Muroran.

    We ate at the food court and cruised around the Tourist Information Center. Both Symeon and Paul love to hang out there as there was stable cell phone signal for them and they could use up the data plan they got in Japan.

    I felt cold that morning and I didn’t want to get sick, so I walked back to the onsen to take a hot bath while Symeon and Paul stayed in the Tourist Information Center. It is an onsen with private bathroom, so I can take a shower and soak in the hot spring all by myself. However, they do not provide towel and I had to buy one and take it with me.

    After taking a bath at the onsen, I went back to join Paul and Symeon for some Hokkaido milk (it is a tradition to have milk after onsen) and icecream. Then we started to walk back to our cruise ship.

    On the way to the cruise ship, we saw the “Bell of Happiness” and we made a wish that all our friends and family are happy. It was a lovely day to walk by the seashore. We love the breeze and enjoyed the walk.

    After we got back to the ship port, we saw the shuttle bus we took this morning and it was not busy at all. We decided to ride the shuttle bus and have a quick browse of the city. The bus made a loop and we went back to our cruise and we had some taco as afternoon snack. It is a relaxing day!

  • Washou Market at Kushiro

    Our boat docked at Kushiro today. We planned to go to the Washou Market at Kushiro. We first rode on a shuttle bus to a small tourist market. We cruised around, then we went to Washou Market by taxi.

    We wanted to taste some fresh seafood, Kushiro is a famous fishing port, that’s the reason we want to go to the Washou market.

    Right after we arrived the Washou market, we saw many booth selling different kind of seafood. Paul didn’t want to buy a whole crab to eat. The owner of the booth next to the crab booth was so whole-hearted and showed us how to order food from his booth. His booth sold different variety of seafood. Therefore, we followed him. His booth was actually selling sashimi don (rice with raw fish). We first went to the rice booth and pick the size of the rice we want. Then we went back to the sashimi booth to pick whatever we like. There were lots of variety in the booth (they even had whale sashimi).

    I picked different kind of squid, shrimp, tuna, crab meat, sea urchin and more. I knew I picked too much but I really wanted to taste everything.

    The Washou market didn’t disappoint us. Everything was very fresh and yummy. Paul even said he had the best salmon sashimi ever here at the Washou market. Eventually, we convinced Symeon to get a salmon sashimi rice and he loved it too!

    After eating, we shopped around. We bought some Japanese snack (chip and dry squid) in a big assorted bag. We also bought some fruit (strawberries and grape). Symeon tried to use up all his money in his SUICA card, so he bought this favourite drink from the vending machine and he was so nice to get daddy some drinks too! We stocked up our fridge because we knew this is our last stop in Japan, we are going to cross the Pacific Ocean and we are going to have 5 continuous sea days (I was wrong. It was actually 6 sea days eventually!).

    After we went back to the boat and our cruise was ready to leave Japan. It was raining hard and the Japanese people were so nice, they stood in the rain and waved at our boat. We love Japan and we will come back one day!

  • Crossing the Pacific Ocean

    After leaving Japan, we were going to cross the Pacific Ocean and the International Date Line. This was our 10+ cruise, but this was our first time crossing an ocean. Our biggest challenges were the storm and the time change.

    Right after we left Japan, I went to the spa. I was ok and I told the spa attendant that I would come back again at night. The captain also told us through broadcasting that there would be a storm and our cruise would go slower to avoid going into the storm. However, as we were following the storm, the ride would be more bumpy and the ship would be unstable.

    At dinner, while we were waiting for our table, Symeon played with me; poking me and bugging me while the cruise ship was not steady. I then had motion sickness at the dinner table. The waiters in the dinning room were so nice. They knew that I didn’t feel well, and they kept giving me apple, crackers and lemon tea. I felt better at the dinning table and finished my meal. However, I was not able to go to the spa and have to lie down on the bed after dinner. I kept eating ginger candy (I brought some from home and I bought a big bag at the Hong Kong airport). I didn’t have any stomach problem after eating a great amount of ginger candy, but I could still feel the wave at sea and it became more and more severe. The only way I could deal with it was to sleep through it. Paul and Symeon still did their normal activities that night, but Paul told me the pools were like wave pool that night (but that was not the worst night yet!)

    Our first of the five sea day, I skipped lunch while the boys went for lunch as usual. They got me some hot lemon tea after they came back for lunch. Paul and I ate the cake and the fruit we bought in Japan in the room while Symeon still went out and play.

    Paul fell asleep before we finished the fruit. I took a nap after eating and the ship was wobbling hard.

    After I woke up, Paul told me that he didn’t feel well and Symeon was sleeping on the couch. Paul was determined to skip dinner, so Symeon and I went to dinning room to eat.

    At the dinning room, the hostess suggested us a table by the window. The dinning room was not busy at all; it was half emptied, as many people got seasick that night. The hostess told me that we would be able to see the sea at the window table but it will be a little bumpy. I took the table and started ordering. We ate our first course and Symeon began to have motion sickness. He then closed his eyes and lie down on the table. I asked him to go back to the cabin but he said “No.” I gave him a plastic bag “just in case”. After 5 minutes, he puked, not inside the plastic bag but on the plastic bag. It meant he puked all over our table. He had to go back to the cabin, shower and change.

    Our server was so good. He brought the food that Symeon didn’t eat with 2 apples to our cabin. I stayed in the dinning, but everyone sat in our area left. The area was very rocky and I was the only one sat at that area.

    After dinner, I went back to our cabin and I got a phone call from the medical centre. The nurse told me that the dinning room told them that my son was having motion sickness and she wanted to give him some medicine. I then went to the medical centre to pick up medicine for both Symeon and Paul. Their service was awesome!

    After taking medicine, we all went to bed early. The wind and the wave were so strong that the furniture in the balcony kept moving and making banging sound all night long. This is the only night that I skipped going to the spa. Later, we found out from the other passenger that the captain changed his strategy and decided to drive through the storm instead of following it; we were too dizzy to hear the announcement.

    Symeon felt better the other day after we woke up at noon. He was so hungry and he went to Lido market for buffet himself. Paul was so sick that he couldn’t get up for bed. I wanted to lie down and I wanted to stay in bed too. The boat was rocking too much, although I didn’t have seasick at the moment, I didn’t feel like it too. I closed my eyes and lied on the bed and I could feel our boat was coming across a high wave, then many items, bottles, charging station, etc, fell off the desk. I quickly went to the desk to make sure nothing was broken. Symeon’s charging station fell off to the ground too. Later, we couldn’t find Symeon’s AirPods and it probably went into the garbage can when the charging station drops.

    Paul had been sleeping for 30 hours and he only got up for apples and washroom. I told him that he had to get up for dinner that night. Our stewards had to clean up the room and it was not healthy to stuck in our small cabin for too long. Paul agreed. Then he took a shower and I changed into a dress because I think we were going to eat at the main dining room as it is located in a lower floor. It should be less rocky downstairs. However, after shower Paul told me he would like buffet instead. As we were going upstairs and it was a wavy night, I put on a legging under my dress.

    Upstairs at the Lido market was busy tonight. We shared a table with our friends, Petra and Skyler who we met onboard. Petra told us that the wave last night was 6 meters high and if the captain chose to go from the other side, the wave will be 20 meters high. Skyler also said the whole minibar from his room fell and one of the bottle of water broke. I felt smart that I asked my steward to take away the fragile item from the minibar on the first time we came onboard. When we were still having dinner, Petra and Skyler went down for a music show. Paul looked ok and his appetite came back.

    While Paul sat alone at the table, I went to get dessert. I picked 2 kinds of dessert and both of my hands were occupied. Suddenly, a big wave came and I heard many items fell off. Some seniors were losing balance too. I saw a big tray of used dishes was going to fall and I am nearby it. I tried to use my feet to hold it from falling, but a serve moved towards me quickly and stopped the tray from falling. After I went back to my table, all the drink at our table disappeared as they all fell down to the ground. Our steward also told us that his other guest had dinner at a specialty restaurant had all the food, wine and drink fell all over on him and he had to go back to the cabin and change. We also heard that 300 plates were broken through this storm.

    Besides the storm, time change was also a pain for us. In this cruise, we need to put the clock forward for 8 hours. In the 5 consecutive sea days, we had to adjust the clock forward for 7 times included one time had to move the clock back for 23 hours (- a day and + an hour, so we had two May 3 on this cruise) when we cross the International Date Line. We were like moving an hour or 2 forward each day for 6 days in a row. The first couple days were ok, but later, as more time forward, it really affected our sleep cycle!

  • “We are going to the Pinnacle Grill!”

    After a couple really bumpy days, we were used to the wave.

    I headed to the spa in the afternoon and I told Paul and Symeon that we would meet at dinner at the buffet at 7pm and I told Paul we had a reservation at the Pinnacle Grill (the Steakhouse onboard) the day after.

    When I closed my eyes and enjoying the thermal bed, suddenly I felt someone was touching me, like poking above my chest. I started screaming, then I opened my eyes and I saw Symeon (kids are not allow in the spa). Everyone looked at us in the thermal room. Then Symeon said “We are going to the Pinnacle Grill!” I said “No, tomorrow”. He said “It changed at 7pm tonight!”

    I quickly took my stuff and left the spa. I almost forgot to take my room key card too!

    After I got back to my room, Paul told me the reservation was tonight at 6pm, but they moved the dinner to 7pm.

    It was a nice dinner and we had a good time! Thinking of Symeon scaring me at the spa makes me smile the whole trip!

  • Kodiak, Alaska

    It was a short stop and our first stop in Alaska. We didn’t want to do much here. However, we had been stuck inside the cruise ship for almost a week, we wanted to get out and get some fresh air. Hence, after the immigration process to the United States in the theatre of the cruise ship, we went out to the shore for lunch, shopped for some souvenir, then we took the tender boat to get back onshore.

    We did think about to go to Walmart, but we couldn’t get an Uber. If we go by taxi, we worried that we might not be able to come back on time. Nonetheless, we found a very special toy shop by the port and there were lots of special toy inside and Symeon was thrilled!

  • Wine Tasting onboard

    It was a sea day in Alaska. Paul went for jogging after lunch. After I chatted with my friends I met onboard, then I went to wine tasting by myself. This wine tasting was different from ordinary wine tasting, they serve high-ended wine and they taught us to pair wine with different food. I learnt a lot from the event.

    After 5 glasses of different wine, I was a bit tipsy, Paul came pick me up. They let him try some wine without extra cost too. Paul was happy and bought some wine home! We then went for afternoon tea together!

  • Sitka, Alaska

    We joined a local tour to visit Sitka in Alaska, but we did not expect to take a tender boat in this port though. We left our room at 8:45am and we got priority to take the tender boat (first boat available for us) and we arrived the pier at 9:20am. I was very lost and didn’t know where to go. Fortunately, the tour guide called me at 9:28am and gave me direction. We were 5 minutes late and arrived at 9:35am.

    We first got onto a comfortably air-conditioned bus. We made a couple stop. First, we went to the Silver Bay and saw the beautiful shoreline. Second, we looked at the special plants, natural environment and the totem pole at the National Historical Park. We then visited the Alaska Raptor Centre. Finally, we visited the Fortress of Bear. Symeon was happy to see the wildlife animal at each of these location.

    The tour finished before lunch and we went to a restaurant call “Coldwater” for lunch. We ordered an Alaska King Crab leg to share. It was way bigger and fresher than the ones in Vancouver and Japan; but they were not cheap! It worths for a taste though!

    After lunch, we looked at some souvenir stores, then it started raining hard and we went back to our cruise ship by tender boat!

    We were soaking wet after we got back to our room. After I settle everything, then I went to the hot pool in the spa to soak in hot water to prevent getting sick again!

  • Ketchikan, Alaska

    We’ve been to Ketchikan before. We would like to have some lunch, do some shopping and cruise around the Main Street this time.

    After we woke up in the morning, we discovered that the city was right next to our cruise ship and the weather was not so bad. We got changed and go explore the city.

    We first shopped at a souvenir store and the store owner recommended a restaurant called “Crab and Go”. The server was really nice. She was able to find me a room temperature Champaign. We also ordered some king crab (one red, one golden leg) and half of a Dungeness crab. The king crab tasted good, but surprisingly, the crab tasted even better.

    The souvenir stores here were bigger and better well organized. We could feel more “Alaska” in the store.

    We ordered some coffee to warm ourselves up, then we went back to the cruise ship. We took some photo from our balcony to say goodbye to our last stop in Alaska!

  • Inside Passage and the Northern Light

    After we left Alaska, we were supposed to go to Victoria through an inside passage. Many of our friends we met on the boat looked forward to see the beautiful scenery of the inside passage.

    After we woke up, we only see the ocean and some mountain far away. Later, the captain broadcasted that he made a mistake and missed the turn into the inside passage. However, the weather forecast showing that we were able to see the Northern Lights tonight between 10pm to 2am. We were all excised about it.

    We were careful. We didn’t even consume any alcohol during dinner because we did not want to miss the Northern Light. After dinner, we went back to our room to rest. I even missed to go to the spa tonight to see the Northern Light.

    From the social media, we saw lots of posting about the Northern Lights from the east coast (3 hours ahead of our time). I decided to take a nap before 10pm. I woke up at 10pm and there was nothing at the balcony. At 10:30pm, Paul and Symeon went upstairs to the Lido market for mid-night snack. At around 10:40pm, I saw post from Facebook sharing Northern Lights post from places near home. Then I put on a thick jacket and a warm slipper, and went to sit outside of the balcony.

    When I was in the balcony, I saw some milky cloud, like a curtain, from the sky, but there was no colour at all! I looked at the photo from FB again and the photo was similar to what I saw on the sky, but with colour. Then I took my phone out and tried to take some photo of the sky and colour shown on the photo. This only worked on the phone rear camera, not the front camera for selfies!

    Symeon came back with a cup of hot water for me. Then I asked him to put on a jacket and we took some photo. We took a couple nice shots and Symeon went back to play with his video game.

    Then Paul came back and said he didn’t see any Northern Lights upstairs. Then I showed him how to capture it too. I also showed our next door neighbour from the balcony. Everybody is happy!

    It was almost the end of our journey. It was a very good wrap up and this made our trip more memorable!
