Day 10 - Second day at high school

    October 6, 2017 in Nepal ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

Today students demonstrated all that they had learnt yesterday. They were most impressive today. We were so proud of them. Today Alec ran a lesson about cities of Australia, Bryce taught "I love a sunburnt country", Connor played Bingo with the students to help the pronunciation of numbers, and Alex taught about the Australian Kelpie.
    Now they are playing volleyball.
I am happy to say that all students are rising to the occasion In a substantial way.

Day 11 - Third day at High School

    October 7, 2017 in Nepal ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

Yesterday we had 64 Nepalese students. Today is a public holiday and we only had 14. Our students are becoming more creative and growing with the experience. Today Joel taught some limericks, Sophie taught about Australian animals and Michael taught the song " Bad Moon Rising", which we only planned last night. Tijmen was going to do some drama games but we didn't have enough students. Tomorrow we apparently have to give a concert. There will need to be some preparation tonight. We are so proud of our students. It is certainly a confronting but growing experience for them all.
The volleyball competition continues. These Nepalese are extremely experienced at this game. Our students are determined to match them well in the next couple of days.

Day 12 - 4th day at the high school

    October 8, 2017 in Nepal ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

Well it's amazing how we can go when we 'fly by the seat of our pants'! Most of the lessons our students prepared were for primary, but we've spent 4 days at the high school. We had no secondary art and craft activity prepared but last night Holly, Sophie and I prepared a lesson teaching students to make chatterboxes. The girls presented it really well and it has been a great success. Michael has saved our bacon a number of times. He has used a guitar from here and taught himself the chords for a song for two consecutive days. Today he taught Cat Stevens' song "Father and Son". Tijmen finally had a chance to play Drama games and except for a few shy souls this has created much enjoyment. Alex expertly taught a lesson on Agriculture in Australia. He is super organised and a fine presenter.
This afternoon we have been asked to present 3 items at a concert, so we are going to do the Macarena, sing Father and Son and sing Bad Moon Rising. We will try and get the Nepali students to join us in each of these. These kids have done so well here!!! I'll report on the concert next time.

    Day 13 - Primary School

    October 10, 2017 in Nepal ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

All hands on deck today. There were only 14 students so we collapsed some of our lessons together. Students did dot-to-dot, Australian animals, reading children's books, the Hokey Pokey and hand painting on a big sheet. All round it was a successful day and our students were great again.
The whole community came together to perform a wonderful concert for us. It was magical and really demonstrated the great community spirit that exists in a place like this and no longer seems to exist in the west.

Day 14 - back to Kathmandu

    October 10, 2017 in Nepal ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

Another hair raising journey back to Kathmandu with a very talented driver. How they manage to drive on these roads I've no idea. Students looking forward to hitting the shops and going out to dinner.

    Day 15 - Kathmandu

    October 11, 2017 in Nepal ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

Today we visited the Shree Bouddhanath, the Monkey Temple, reached by climbing many many steps. The was fascinating. Unfortunately, Connor was ill and stayed in bed. He seems OK now. Everyone completed more shopping during the remainder of the day and again we are going out for dinner.
I intended to put lots of photos on this site, but poor internet access has beaten me. Matthew has an app to shrink his photos for Facebook. Anyway, we'll be home soon and you'll see all the photos.
Tomorrow morning we set off home, so we'll see you before I could do another post.
I think it is fair to say that this trip has been the experience of a lifetime and I'm fairly sure that all of the students feel the same way. The students have been fantastic in every sense, with only 15 year old hi-jinks to deal with. There has not been a single complaint from any student and they have risen to the challenge admirably. You should all be very proud of them.
POSTSCRIPT- I finally managed to load some photos.
