India, here we come!

Since Brussels Airlines started flying to India (Mumbai) in 2017, we decided to discover this country, this culture and of course the Indian Cuisine! 😉

It was a last minute decision, but yes... we left for one week India. Our trip started with 2 flights.

✈ Brussel-Munich
✈ Munich-Delhi

We couldn't start our trip any better then traveling business class and receive a very good service on board! The business class was empty, only Yves, me and some other guy. Awesome!!! 😁
We enjoyed some good (Indian) food and of course an Indian Masala Tea to start our journey in Indian style!

Off to Delhi!!!

Arrived at Delhi Airport

After midnight, we arrived at Delhi! Yay!
Thanks to the prepaid taxi service, we found a cab that drove us to the "hotel".
For our first night, we booked a hotel near the airport. Chanakya Hotel, only 26€/night.
Not bad... so we just booked it.......

Once we arrived, we realized we made a horrible mistake by choosing this cheap hotel.
The moment we opened the door of our room, we looked at eachother with a face you can't imagine haha.
Dirty.... very dirty.... no hot water, no towels, spiders in bed, dirt on the floor, ripped beddings, curry on our sheets from previous guests, bathroom (no toilet paper), nothing... 😄

So we just try to sleep and leave the next morning as soon as possible!!!

Ps: these pics aren't ours. I found them on the internet. But they look 100 x times better than our room. Unfortunately I was too shocked and forgot to take pics! HahaEn savoir plus

Sightseeing @ Delhi

Saturday early morning! ☉
We didn't sleep a lot in this dirty room... we left as soon as we could and took a taxi to Delhi city!
Ready to explore the city...
At least... that's what we thought.
The moment we arrived in Delhi, people told us there was a strike for 2 days. Everything is closed, you better book a excursion and leave today!

FORTUNATELY we learned our lesson in Marrakech. This was a rip off! People in the street worked together for the same "official" (NOT!) Tourism office.

We left immediately and went to starbucks to book our hotel and our trips for the following days.
Long live the internet! 😄

Lotus temple Delhi

Let's explore Delhi city! 🌹
First stop... the Lotus temple.
This temple is built in the shape of a lotus flower and is the last of seven Major Bahai's temples built around the world.

The structure is made up of pure white marble The architect Furiburz Sabha chose the lotus as the symbol common to Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Islam.

It's free to visit the temple, a place for all religions to pray or meditate.

Around the blooming petals there are nine pools of water, which light up, in natural light.

Red fort, Delhi

RED FORT is a historic fort in the city of Delhi.
It was the main residence of the emperors of the Mughal dynasty for nearly 200 years, until 1856.
Very nice especially because of the "red" color.

Riksja ride through Old Delhi

Of course we had to take a riksja ride through Chawni Chowk & Old Delhi.
Unfortunately, we had this pushy riksja guy who didn't want to leave us alone or just drop us off at our location. He really tried to give us a complete tour, which we didn't appreciate at all.

Once in Old Delhi, we got off and told him to leave us alone in a friendly way.

At old Delhi, we tried some local streetfood:
Samosa, kroket, Indian Kheer (rice pudding), weird drink served in an egg shell (yuk!), indian carmelized nougat.

Afterwards we read about the "Delhi Belly" and we are sooooo lucky we didn't got sick. From that day we were more careful with Indian Streetfood! 😄

It was quiet an experience to walk around at Old Delhi. We saw many poverty, cows, dogs and of course a lot of food & Indian Masala Tea served in the streets.En savoir plus

The last picture is PANEER. The typical Indian cheese they use in many of their dishes for ex. Palak Paneer. So yummy! 😍

Taj Mahal, Agra

YES!!!!!! Taj Mahal! Bucketlist... check! ✔😁
One of our main reasons we came to India!

After 4 h drive, we finally arrived at Agra.
It was FANTASTIC.... it's breath taking... so so so beautiful! We are very thankful to be able to see this amazing Monument.

We've spent 2 hours at the Taj Mahal.
After our visit we tried to get a train ticket to Varanasi, but the only option was a 11 h stand up train. So we drove all the way back (5 h + traffic jam) to Delhi Aerocity and the next morning, we took a direct flight to Varanasi! Our NEXT destination! ❤En savoir plus

The good thing is... even there are very LOOOOONG queues for Indian people. But as a foreigner, you don't have to get in line. You just go wherever we want. I love this priority! 😉En savoir plus

Safely arrived at Varanasi!

Finally... we made it to Varanasi (aka Benares).
The moment we arrived, Yves was surrounded by Taxi drivers. He couldn't escape...

Evening rituals on the Ganges river

As soon we arrived at our hotel, we checked in and left immediately with our cab driver to the Ganges. Because the sunset started... so that means the evening rituals on the Ganges were about to begin.
We didn't want to miss this!!!
At 18h30 we arrived and took a boat to see the BURNING GHAT (cremation place) and of course the GANGA AARTI (spiritual ritual)

The offering is made to the Goddess Ganga, goddess of the most holy river in India.
Our magical flower and candle aarti is now floating on the Ganges river and is full of our blessings. ❤

This was an amazing and unique experience.

Indian cuisine @ Varanasi

After our incredible boat trip on the Ganges river & the Rituals, it was time for dinner and our first meal of the day! We were starving!
Since the food is made with the Ganges water, we didn't eat any street food. So we only ate at our hotel and didn't get sick!! Yay!!! 😄

Our choices:

Starter: paneer
Main course: Butter chicken tikka masala + naan (Yves), Palak Paneer + rice (Sin)
And of course... my favorite... Indian DOSA with 3 delicious dips! Love this soooo much! But I've never seen a dosa this big! 😍 Look how happy I am! 😁En savoir plus

Only 3,5 h of sleep...
It was a chilly pre-dawn morning in Varanasi when we made our way back to the Ganges River to witness the morning rituals in this holiest city of India.

Morning bathing & praying in the Ganges

Goodmorning! The sun is up, after their temple visit people flock to the ghats of Ganges each day to bath in its sacred river. They believe that the purifying water of the river would absolve them of their sins.

Washing clothes & laundry in the Ganges

The Ganges River is one big washing machine! Apparently, doing laundry in the holy river is also an age old tradition. It was fascinating to watch people doing the washing by rhythmically hitting the clothes on the slabs.En savoir plus
