    Venice Airport

    November 8, 2018 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 54 °F

Up at 5:30 am for a 9:45 flight to Munich on Air Dolomite. Couldn’t check in online. Was sweating our carry on because we only have 80 minutes in Munich to make the connection with our United flight and we were afraid we’d have to claim our bags and check in again. If so, we knew we were probably doomed. Fortunately they checked our carry ons to IAD where we will reclaim them and then check them through again to the GSO. (apparently Air Dolomite is owned by Lufthansa and they’re part of of Star Alliance, so I lucked out)

TSA was quick although I didn’t pull my iPad out and got busted so had to fish it out and go through again.

Super foggy out. Going to be a blind takeoff. Looks like we’re going to take off about 15 mins late , shaving our Munich layover to 1 hr unless we make up some time. Lift off at 10:05 - 20 mins late.

Just saw on the departure board that they cancelled a SwissAir flight to Zurich. At least 8 of our friends were on that flight. Wondering what they’re going to do now? (Found our later Swiss Air didn’t take off due to fog)

Touchdown 10:48. 43 minute flight.Off plane and onto bus at 11:00. On board our United flight at 11:41, 30 minutes before departure. Security put me through special screening again. Maybe because I had a passport stolen back in March??

I consider us very lucky to have pulled these flights off. This is what happens when you purchase a cheaper flight - a few more gray hairs!

Now ready for China in late March 2019!!

Hope you enjoyed the journal! If you click on the home page of FindPenguins, you’ll find journals of our other trips over the past few years

    Venice for an afternoon

    November 7, 2018 in Italy ⋅ 🌧 63 °F

Arrived at 11:15am. Short intro talk on how to catch the bus downtown. Janet and I had checked out a Viator walking tour with gondola ride and decided to book it last moment. Told our friends Ted and Shirley about it (they’re from Queens) and they booked it with us. Had a grand time for the next 8 hrs! Took the water taxi to San Marcos Square and then hoofed it to the meeting point for our walking tour. Great walking tour- funny guide. Marvelous gondola ride. Wild and crazy walk to a neat little restaurant (I bow to you Google Maps!! You are my hero!).Read more

    Back in Bled

    November 6, 2018 in Slovenia ⋅ 🌧 54 °F

Sun broke out for a few minutes on the way back, then whoosh. Raining again managed to get this foggy shot of the castle from our room balcony. Evening going away reception coming up in about 3 hrs. Had to raid an ATM to get some euros for tips to our tour director and bus driver. Got an early bus departure at 7 am to head for our final night in Venice.Read more

    November 6, 2018 in Slovenia ⋅ ⛅ 57 °F

City walking tour and eating (venison goulash and dark beer and mushroom soup). Good time today. Bought some pastries to share with the Group that are famous in Slovenia. Think everyone is enjoying the final day. Some are going to Venice for 1 more night (like us). Others are staying for 2 nights, which I wish we were!

On the drive back to Bled, the sun pops out - of course!

    Bled Castle

    November 6, 2018 in Slovenia ⋅ 🌧 52 °F

Tour of the castle. Foggy day. I had really hoped to hit Bled on a sunny day as it is purported to be gorgeous. Not to be though. We got to use the Gutenberg printing press to print our own castle print - very cool. Tried to show part of the video here. FindPenguins limits lengths of videos. Now in our way to Ljubljana for a city tour - driving through the rain. Only one more day left on our trip, so in reality we lucked out big time with the weather.
“Ljubljana is the known to be the perfect spot for lazy tourists - you can stand in the middle, look all around and you got it”

    Dinner in Radovljica

    November 5, 2018 in Slovenia ⋅ ⛅ 52 °F

Arrived at our restaurant of the evening. Entertained by accordion player and dancers along with a wine tasting. Entertainment was fine, meal not all that great- had trout, mashed potatoes, small salad, small piece of quiche and some apple pie for dessert. Could have skipped this one.

Arrived at Hotel Park around 9:30. Nice view of Bled castle lit up at night from our balcony. WiFi is horrible and cellular not any better so it may be a bit before these updates go up.
