  • Porto

    27 September 2023, Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

Exploring the city of Porto. Love it. Lots of hills. First stop Livaria Lello, the bookstore that is said to be the inspiration for JK Rowling and her Harry Potter books. Next tapas and on for a wander; tower and church of Clerigos, down to the river and the palace de Bolsa.Baca selengkapnya

  • Day 2 in Porto

    28 September 2023, Portugal ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Spotted our first Camino directional sign in Porto. Wandered up and down the hills of this very vertical city. Stopped at the cathedral to get our first Camino passport stamp and made our way over the bridge to the Gaia side of Porto where we enjoyed a lovely dinner and a glass of Porto produced port. Since Monday we've walked over 40 kms just exploring. Only 270 more to go.Baca selengkapnya

  • Camino Day 1

    29 September 2023, Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

Today we left Porto to start the Camino. We walked along the seaside boardwalk all the way from Matosinhos. Beautiful beach and crashing waves. We stopped on Paraiso at Pe No Mar for lunch and had a lovely meal with great service. Now we are in Labruge (population 3000) before we head on for our hotel tonight in Vila Cha (even smaller population), just up the road.Baca selengkapnya

  • Day 2 on the Camino

    30 September 2023, Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

Started the day from Vila Cha. Had a nice stop in Vila conde mid day and saw some lovely gardens, monuments, old buildings undergoing renovations and a community chapel dating back to the 16th century. Had a nice lunch too ☺️. Then onto Poa da Varzim. When we walked into town the public temperature notice board read 42 degrees! After a shower and a lay down at our hotel Casa Verde we went around the corner for dinner at O Patio where we had a lovely dinner of grilled fish. Highly recommend this restaurant. See the complimentary cheese board for a starter.Baca selengkapnya

  • Day 3 on the Camino

    1 Oktober 2023, Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

We started the day by the coast where it was foggy and misty. Good facial moisturizing 😀 In the afternoon we walked through a lot of agricultural areas, had lunch in Apulia and finally through Fao before crossing the river and we were welcomed on the other side by the Bom Camino sign painted on the road. In a forested area we came across a cairn of stones and other small things people had left in the middle of a forested area. My favorite was a little package inviting folks to take a bandaid if they have blisters. Some interesting monuments to the women of the sea and to workers coming into Esposende and a gazebo that reminded me of Gilmore Girls. 23 kms! A long day.Baca selengkapnya

  • Day 4 on the camino

    2 Oktober 2023, Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

Left Esponsende for a very challenging trail. Walked through several small cobble stoned towns. Cobble stones are hard on the feet! Stopped at one small town cafe and had a nice visit with the resident cat. After that we were into forested hill trails with lots of elevation. Found another cairn of stones and other trinkets left by pilgrims. Finished the day in Viana do Castelo. Found a former hospital ship servicing Portuguese fishermen off the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador. Beautiful town with gorgeous historic buildings.Baca selengkapnya

  • Day 5 on the Camino

    3 Oktober 2023, Portugal ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

We started the day in Viana do Castelo and as we left our hotel we noticed this beautiful shop across the street selling pavlova. We restrained ourselves but I had to take a photo. We then traveled up a funicular to visit the church of Santa Luzia. The views from the top were stunning. We stopped in a nice little town called Ancora, where we had some coffee and nata tarts ( so good but I forgot to take a photo). Our walking today had us travel along the beach and through an area of tiny farms where we saw horses, sheep and goats. We also traveled through a nice cool forested area before returning to the trail along the beach. We finished the day in Caminha and dinner at a very enjoyable restaurant called Baptista. Tomorrow we travel across the river into Spain.Baca selengkapnya

  • Day 6 on the camino

    4 Oktober 2023, Spanyol ⋅ 🌙 19 °C

We left Portugal and traveled by a "water taxi" to Spain. Another day of beach, forest and road travel with some lovely stops along the way. We took Alayne Sinclair's advice finally and stopped for a "second breakfast" of "pum king" cake and almond cake with cappuccino. We stopped for lunch in Portocelos and had some great food - calamari and a bocadillo - but more importantly we enjoyed a beautiful view. Finally we arrived Villadesuso and our beautiful guest house. Mary and I were the only guests. Our host drove us into town for a great dinner (two amazing salads) overlooking the water and picked us up to bring us home and we are now sitting in the comfy lounge enjoying some quiet time. Finally, Mary's photo of the donkey outside her window at our guest house.Baca selengkapnya

  • Day 7 on the Camino

    5 Oktober 2023, Spanyol ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

Started our day with an amazing breakfast at our guest house in Villadesusa after which we headed off down the rural roads on a cool morning. Came across the local town cemetery. Not too far along the same road we discovered another pilgrim cairn with many more stones than what we have previously seen. It seems the local people are contributing some beautifully painted stones. I of course liked the cat one. We walked into As Marinas and stopped for lunch at a beautiful hotel with an upper patio overlooking the water and ordered a couple of delicious salads. Then on to Baiona - another beautiful town of 12,000+ people - where we visited the castle overlooking the city and then had a tapas dinner and some great Spanish Vermouth.Baca selengkapnya

  • Day 8 on the Camino

    5 Oktober 2023, Spanyol ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

We departed our Baiona hotel as the sun was rising and walked along the beautiful coastline for sometime, and crossed over the river on an ancient foot bridge in Ramallosa. Then the path took us beside the highway for a long time. We stopped for a lovely lunch of salad with tuna, padron peppers and garlic mushrooms. We arrived for the night in Vigo, a city of over 300,000 population on a busy Friday night where friends were gathered everywhere for drinks and snacks.Baca selengkapnya

  • Day 9 on the Camino

    7 Oktober 2023, Spanyol ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

Started the day from Vigo as the sun was rising. It took quite some time to reach the city outskirts and then we started to climb, up and up and up and up. Huge, steep ascent from the city. Along the way we walked through some beautiful small towns and some forested areas. We came across a very cool painting on a rock, a waterfall area with a couple benches for resting and chickens. In the Cabanas town - all houses except for this one lovely restaurant - O Eida Vella Taperia - operated out of the home of a very friendly woman who served us a beautiful charcuterie and cheese meal with bread. We arrived for the night to stay in our guest house in Redondela. We had dinner - I am sure we were the only non-locals in the place - where we enjoyed some more Spanish Vermouth and I ate cockles for the first time.Baca selengkapnya

  • Day 10 on the Camino

    8 Oktober 2023, Spanyol ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

Started our Thanksgiving Sunday with a fabulous included breakfast at a bakery around the corner from our guest house. The town and bakery was packed with Camino walkers and cyclists as it seems it was the only place open that early in the am. We spent the day walking up and down some steep hills and then through forested and farm areas. Finally saw many vineyards today. And some horses. Sorry no cats today Elizabeth. In the forest we saw several murals painted on old buildings, an underpass and a shed. We also came across a cool area where someone had placed some metal pilgrim statues in front of a covered area with a half dozen straw beds for pilgrims to use. Found a small chapel in a tiny town where we were able to get another stamp. Finally in to Pontevedra and a walk around the historic centre - see the beautiful church - and we finished the night with a fabulous dinner at Kamelia Taberna. If you are ever in Pontevedra I recommend their ensalada with goat cheese. Amazing. Sadly I neglected to take a photo.Baca selengkapnya

  • Day 11 on the Camino

    9 Oktober 2023, Spanyol ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

We departed Pontevedra and wandered over another an old pedestrian bridge to cross the river. The day was largely in the woods with a few very tiny towns - read a few houses and maybe a farm. Took the cow and donkey photos for Elizabeth. Around 2 pm we found a cafe in someone's home with a patio constructed under the vineyard trestles. When we stopped for a rest at some point, wet and out of breath we were made to laugh by the addition to a stop sign. We arrived hot and exhausted at our beautiful guest house outside Calas de Reis where we enjoyed a light dinner and some award winning Spanish Vermut (vermouth) by the pool.Baca selengkapnya

  • Day 12 on the Camino

    10 Oktober 2023, Spanyol ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

Started our day with a very full breakfast at our guest house outside Calas de Reis and then Mom drove us into town to begin our journey on the trail. Lots of people on the trail today but it was still peaceful with all the forested areas and small quiet towns. Had a coffee at Buen Camino coffee shop in San Miguel da Valga. Fun spot with a nice patio and good music and food selection, as well as something small I can hang among all our travel photos and prints. Found a couple more donkeys and cows for you Elizabeth. We were very entertained by several things today; an automatic lawn mower, a penguin lawn decoration and the fun with stop signs. Arriving in Padron we visited the Basilica, wandered over the river and watched the ducks floating. Tomorrow we start the final leg to Santiago.Baca selengkapnya

  • Day 13 walking the Camino

    11 Oktober 2023, Spanyol ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

Started our final day on the Camino in Padron (same name as the famous tapas peppers). It was a long day; 21.5 kms. We walked through small little hamlets and some forested areas. Saw lots of cats today and stopped for lunch at A Casina Galega in Picarana. Had the largest BLT either of us has ever seen. We actually laughed when they were put in front of us as there was not a chance we could eat more than half. There was however a very sweet stray cat who joined us on the patio and she really enjoyed the bacon from my uneaten half sandwich. Saw some more cute animals today and a farm where the scarecrows are dressed for Halloween. On the edge of Santiago someone had decorated the front of their home with some figures. Also wanted to share something we've seen in several cities; the public park exercise equipment. We also saw this in Portugal along the coastline. Such a cool idea. Finally we arrived in Santiago and did the obligatory selfie in front of the Cathedral. It is an awe inspiring place. And then we went and celebrated with ice cream!Baca selengkapnya
