  • Merida

    February 22, 2024 in Mexico ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

After a long day of navigating the sham rental car maze of insurance sales we finally got on our way to Merida. After a 3.5 hour drive along a great highway we arrived in Merida and our lovely Airbnb. Last night we went downtown to a local restaurant and joined in some margarita drinking during happy hour followed by some tacos and quesadillas.Read more

  • Nothing much happening

    February 29, 2024 in Mexico ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

Both Barry and I have been ill the past few days with a cold/flu so we've been largely house bound. Our patio is lovely however and I've spent many an hour out here reading, listening to the birds and watching the geckos come and go. Oh how I have missed living around these cute little creatures that eat bugs. Oh and we have an orange tree in our yard!Read more

  • Happy faces and happy hour

    March 3, 2024 in Mexico ⋅ ☀️ 32 °C

We spent the day touring the beach communities to the north of merida. Lots of beautiful sand but not a lot to recommend the surrounding town of Progreso. We returned to Merida, discovered the Costco, bought ourselves two new lounge chairs and some mezcal. Now we are back on our patio sipping our new purchase that was recommended by a lovely Mexican man we met in Costco.Read more

  • Anniversary day

    March 4, 2024 in Mexico ⋅ ☁️ 32 °C

Today we celebrated our anniversary with a lazy day at our Airbnb on the patio in our new chairs, followed by a walk downtown to a much recommended Mayan restaurant for dinner. Along the way we passed parks that were setting up for evening activities and musical performances.Read more

  • Valladolid

    March 8, 2024 in Mexico ⋅ ⛅ 35 °C

Today we decided to venture out a couple hours east to check out Valladolid (recommended by Lucy Watson). It is about one tenth the size of Merida but has many more obvious tourists. We were interested to see how many Europeans were visiting in addition to Canadians and Americans. We started with a visit to the Mercado Municipal, the main city market where we bought a bunch of lovely produce for a song.

We stopped at a wonderful cafe (los portales) across from the main square park. I was entertained seeing the names on the taxis. See the Dammit Boy! Next we walked around the side streets to explore. We tried walking the pedestrian street ( Cal de los Frailes) with lots of tiny shops but with no shade we had to revert back to the more central part of the city and the park with large trees and shade. Finally we walked to Wabi Gelato where we tried some amazing flavours (chocolate with red fruits and pineapple with coriander). Yum!!!

We took the scenic route back to Merida along the old highway and drove through countless small villages and stopped at one of the local cemeteries. I was fascintated to see that many of the graves seem to be a cap of poured concrete into which someone has scratched the name and DOB and death in with a stick. See the last photo of the garbage bin at the entrance to the cemetery. No idea what Bob Marley was doing on their bin but...

  • Sunday in Merida

    March 17, 2024 in Mexico ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

We decided to get up early this morning and go explore central Merida on market day before it got too hot. It was only 29 degrees when we set out this morning.

We zig zagged our way to the central plaza - about a 2.5 km walk.

Once downtown we perused all the central market stalls and then wandered to several blocks around the market where we were told we would find real Mayan products. Interestingly many men stopped us along the way to tell us we should go a different way for just a few meters to see a particular shop. After a while we looked at each other and said this is like being in Istanbul - "come let me take you to my uncle's shop for tea and see his carpets" - but it was all good fun nonetheless.

While wandering these streets we came across a parade of sorts. Don't ask what it was about. No idea! 🤔

We stopped at a lovely little restaurant with a courtyard patio out back for coffee and a snack. Then back to Pola Gelato. Today I tried the lemon and rosemary. Very good.

Then it was time to start the walk home. Along the way we came across what seemed to be an about to start musical performance so we took some seats. Turns out it was some cartoon characters dancing around and trying to get kids to come join in the fun.

Halfway back to our place we stopped at another local restaurant for a drink called Jamaica here. It is made with hibiscus flowers steeped in water and some sugar. Nice and tart. It is used as well for what is called a Jamaica margarita. A fellow stopped me in Costco one day to tell me how to make it when he saw we had some tequila in our basket.

Finally home and very hot, we had a long dip in the pool.

  • Chichen Itza

    March 20, 2024 in Mexico ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

Today we visited Chichen Itza to see the Mayan ruins of a pre-columbian city. It is one of the most visited historical sites in Mexico, dating back to 600 - 900 AD. We even saw several large iguanas just hanging out.Read more

  • What a meal!

    March 23, 2024 in Mexico ⋅ 🌙 23 °C

We went out for dinner to Kuuk, described by many as the best restaurant in Merida. We tried the tasting menu. What an adventure of tastes and so creatively presented!

  • Birthday

    March 24, 2024 in Mexico ⋅ ☀️ 32 °C

We had a lovely relaxing day to celebrate my birthday. Traveled to a traditional Yucatan restaurant recommended by our Airbnb host. Some cochinita pibil (shredded pork), loganiza rozada (roasted sausage), relleno negro (turkey in a spicy black sauce) and poc chuc (sliced marinated pork) with tortillas, pickled onions and a very spicy hot sauce made for a great meal. Good margaritas too! Afterwards we returned to the house, took a dip in the pool and lounged on the patio.Read more

  • Celestun and the best ever ceviche

    March 25, 2024 in Mexico ⋅ ☁️ 32 °C

We decided to take a quick trip to Celestun, a beautiful beach town on the west coast of Yucatan today. We ended up at a beach restaurant called Las Ramada de Tia Candi. I thought I had tasted amazing ceviche before but this place...another world ceviche. Anyway, ceviche and margarita on the beach, what could be better.Read more

  • Another beach and brunch in merida

    March 29, 2024 in Mexico ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

A couple days back we went to check out another small beach community close to Merida. Beautiful beach. Water a gorgeous turquoise. The whole beach however is covered in places to sit for a fee and menus of food and drinks that take forever to be served. We figured out the issue as we were leaving. Servers having to walk 4 or 5 blocks to collect orders and then walk back with them.

Today we ventured out for a good Friday brunch and found a place just about 10 blocks from our house. A comfortable open air patio with good service and food at La 70 on Calle 70. Next we traveled to Gato Gordo Cafe (translates to Fat Cat) - also on Calle 70 - for good fair trade Americanos.

  • Last days in Merida

    April 1, 2024 in Mexico ⋅ 🌙 32 °C

Tomorrow we start our return to Edmonton with the 3.5 hour drive to Cancun followed by a 6.5 hour flight to Edmonton.

Yesterday was super hot but decided we had to venture out in any case, returning to Santa Lucia plaza that we visited on Day two here. We wandered in and out of a few shops and had a lovely lunch at Rosa Sur. Then we returned for a pool dip, some reading and playing cards. Today we packed, spent time in the pool, pet and fed the cats we seem to have attracted. We have 5 regulars already.Read more
