• The Human Cement Chain

    May 21, 2025 in Indonesia ⋅ 🌧 29 °C

With the sand and grit we wheelbarrowed a few days ago ,the technicians made concrete for the roof of one of the platforms on one of the islands the orangutans use.
All the volunteers helped by making a human cement chain carrying the cement over an temporary bamboo bridge , across muddy and slippy ground to the platform.
So at any time we were transferring 2 bucket of liquid cement each ..and passing them along..at quite a fast pace 😳.
It was good fun ,but hard work as the buckets were heavy.
When it was all over we were allowed to climb the ladder to see what it look like and write our name or do a hand print.
The bamboo bridge became slippy precarious with the cement slopping out out the buckets 🪣 😳
We had to be really quiet at one point as other technicians were going past in the boat with an orangutan which had been sedated for a vet check and a proceedure.
It was good fun this morning!
Afterwards we had to clean all the buckets and equipment
I was covered in cement on my shirt and trousers
Returned to the Lodge took my shirt off and rinsed under the tap..then used it to wipe down my trousers, both are quick dry fabrics....and no point in changing as I was down to paint the sunbears enclosures this afternoon.!🤣
I'm.getting used to being soaked and mucky and just cracking on! There's no choice really!🤣
After dinner the subject of giving money as tips caused a heated debate and some differences of opinion which I stated was a shame after everyone had got on so well .That caused a further debate saying wasn't an argument and we should be able to discuss these things
